City of New York

New York City, officially named the City of New York, is the most populous city in the United States, and the most densely populated major city in North America. The city is at the center of international finance, politics, entertainment, and culture, and is one of the world’s major global cities (along with London, Tokyo and Paris) with a virtually unrivaled collection of museums, galleries, performance venues, media outlets, international corporations, and stock exchanges. The city is also home to the United Nations, along with all of the international missions associated with it.

History

Long before the arrival of European settlers, the New York City area was inhabited by the Lenape people, including such tribes as the Manahattoes, Canarsies and Raritan. Major events in New York history include¢ In 1524 the first European explorer enters New York Harbor¢ European settlement begins with the following the 1609 voyage of Henry Hudson¢ Founding of the Dutch fur trading settlement in Lower Manhattan in 1613 later called New Amsterdam¢ English ships captured the city without struggle in 1664¢ The Dutch formally ceded New York to the English in the Treaty of Breda at the conclusion of the Second Anglo-Dutch War in 1667¢ The city was renamed New York, after James, Duke of York, and became a royal colony in 1685¢ After the Civil War, the rate of immigration from Europe grew steeply, and New York became the first stop for millions seeking a new and better life in the United States, a role acknowledged by the dedication of the Statue of Liberty in 1886¢ In two separate actions in 1874 and 1895, New York City (and New York County) annexed sections of southern Westchester County known as the Bronx¢ In 1898, New York City took the political form in which it exists to this day.¢ 9/11 changed the political map of the worldPlace of interest

Tourism is a major local industry, with hundreds of attractions and 39 million tourists visiting the city each year on average. Many visitors make it a point to visit Ground Zero, the Empire State Building, Times Square, Radio City Music Hall, the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Wall Street, United Nations Headquarters, the American Museum of Natural History, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Fifth Avenue, and the Brooklyn Bridge, among other attractions. There are over 28,000 acres (113 km²) of parkland found throughout New York City, comprising over 1,700 separate parks and playgrounds. The best known of these is Central Park, which is one of the finest examples of landscape architecture in the world, as well as a major source of recreation for New Yorkers and tourists alike. Other major parks in the city include Riverside Park, Battery Park, Bryant Park, Prospect Park, Flushing Meadow-Corona Park, Washington Square Park, and Forest Park.

Museums & Art Galleries

New York is a city of great museums with the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s assemblage of historic art, the Museum of Modern Art and Guggenheim Museum’s 20th century collection, and the American Museum of Natural History and its Hayden Planetarium focusing on the sciences. There are also many smaller specialty museums, from El Museo del Barrio with a focus on Latin American cultures to the Cooper-Hewitt National Museum of Design. A number of the city’s museums are located along the Museum Mile section of Fifth Avenue.

In addition to these museums, the city is also home to a vast array of spaces for opera, symphony, and dance performances. The largest of these is Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, which is actually a complex of buildings housing 12 separate companies, including the New York Philharmonic, the Metropolitan Opera, the New York City Opera, the New York City Ballet, and Jazz at Lincoln Center. Other notable performance halls include Carnegie Hall, Radio City Music Hall, and the Brooklyn Academy of Music. New York City boasts a highly active and influential theater district, which is centered around Times Square in Manhattan. It serves both as the center of the American theater industry, and as a major attraction for visitors from around the world. Broadway theaters are considered to be of the highest quality in the world.

Shopping

Shopping is popular with many visitors, with Fifth Avenue being a famous shopping corridor for luxury items. Macy’s, the nation’s largest department store, and the surrounding area of Herald Square are a major destination for more moderately-priced goods. In recent years 23rd Street has become a major location for “big-box” retailers. In southern Manhattan, Greenwich Village is home to hundreds of independent music and book stores, while the East Village continues to prevail as purveyors of all things “strange” and unusual which you can’t find anywhere else. The “diamond district” (located on 47th Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues) is the city’s main location for jewelry shopping, and SoHo, formerly the center of the New York art scene, is now famous for high-priced clothing boutiques, and the art galleries are now concentrated in Chelsea. There are also large shopping districts found in Downtown Brooklyn and along Queens Boulevard in Queens.

Food & Drink

New York is the best restaurant town in USA and one of the finest in the world. New York has literally thousands of restaurants to choose from (more than 25,000, in fact), encompassing nearly every cuisine in the world. Some of the big names are Eleven Madison Park, The River Café, Boat Basin Café, Veritas. Like restaurants, thousands of bars and cafes are there in the city. A few old noteworthy among those are: McSorleys Old Ale House, Revival, Push Café and White Horse Tavern.

Universities

New York City is served by the publicly run City University of New York (CUNY), the largest urban university in the United States, which has a number of campuses throughout the five boroughs. The city is also home to a number of other institutions of higher learning, some of national or even international reputation, including Columbia University, Fordham University, Manhattan College, New York University, the Juilliard School, The Cooper Union, Marymount Manhattan College and The New School. New York City is also a major center of academic medicine. Manhattan contains the campuses of the world-class Rockefeller University, Weill Cornell Medical College, and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, as well as Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center and NYU Medical Center and their medical schools. New York City is home to several of the nation’s top schools of art and design, including Pratt Institute, the School of Visual Arts, the Fashion Institute of Technology, and Parsons School of Design

Sports

Although in much of the rest of the country American football has become the most popular professional sport, in New York City baseball arguably still stirs the most passion and interest. A “Subway Series” between city teams is a time of great excitement, and any World Series championship by either the New York Yankees or the New York Mets is considered to be worthy of the highest celebration, including a ticker-tape parade for the victorious team.

Hotels & Accommodation

The City of New York is known as the “city that never sleeps”, but its visitors have to. The city hosts a large number of accommodations options.

Luxury Hotels

New York has many “grand dames,” classic elegant hotels that have been around for years and endured majestically. The St. Regis, the Waldorf, Tribeca Grand Hotel, Ritz-Carlton New York, Sheraton New York Hotel and Towers - are some to mention about.

Budget Hotels

Besides all those luxury hotels, a large number of budget hotels are available in New York City. They are comfortable, homely and light weight for the pocket. Some of them to mention are - The Whitehouse Hotel of New York, The Pioneer, Chelsea Center, Guesthouse and Harlem YMCA. Except these hotels and guesthouses, Skyline Hotel and Travel Inn are rare exception among affordable hotels for their services and facilities.

Tours and Sightseeing

To know and see the New York City with no tension way, a number of tour operators are there for travelers help. These tours contain city and outskirt of the city sightseeing. Tours may vary from its contents or theme. It may be a helicopter tour of Big Apple or may be a double-decker bus tour. Some fair tour agencies are there in the city. Tours can be booked from tour agencies or some hotels arrange them for its patrons. Another easy way to book any of these tours is online tour ticket booking. Some helpful websites for this purpose are:

Transport

The airport authority owns and operates the four major airports in the New York City area, John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in Jamaica, Newark Liberty International Airport in Newark, New Jersey, La Guardia Airport in Flushing, and Teeterboard Airport in Teeterboard, New Jersey.Taxicabs are operated by private companies and licensed by the New York City Taxi & Limousine Commission. Other than cabs, New York City has a mass transit system. Unlike most of America’s car-oriented urban areas, public transportation is the common mode of travel for the majority of New York City residents. The city is served by an extensive network of parkways and expressways, including four primary Interstate Highways enter the New York/New Jersey metropolitan area. The world-famous New York City Subway is operated by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). It is the most extensive subway system in the world. The subway system connects all boroughs except Staten Island, which is served by the Staten Island Railway via the free Staten Island Ferry. In addition to these, city residents rely on hundreds of bus lines, both publicly and privately operated. Many private ferries are run by NY Waterway, which provides several lines across the Hudson River, New York Water Taxi, with lines connecting Brooklyn and Manhattan, and other operators

Brain Fluids

Different Types of Brain Injury

Brain injury can be as individual as people, because every case of brain injury can happen for different reasons and have different effects on people. Classifying the different types of brain injury can require a lot of research. Generally the classification starts with the two more common types of brain injury: traumatic brain injury and acquired brain injury. The levels are ranted as mild, moderate or severe. Brain injuries can also be classified as an open or closed brain injury. In this article, we’ll talk about the more common types of brain injuries.

Traumatic Brain Injury

Traumatic brain injury can happen whenever something strikes the head with force. The force would be strong enough to cause the brain to move in the skull causing internal damage to the brain. It can also occur if the skull breaks and the break itself injures the brain.

There are various reasons for this type of force. It could due to a violent experience, sports injury or a variety of other causes. Any event that causes the head to be struck hard enough an cause this type of traumatic brain injury.

This type of brain injury can also occur from rapid movement back and forth, shaking the brain hard enough in the skull that it becomes damaged. This more commonly happens in auto accidents or in cases such as Shaken Baby Syndrome.  The rapid movement back and forth can do severe damage to the brain.

How To Tell If You’ve Suffered Traumatic Brain Injury

If you have suffered a severe blow to the head, or have been in an accident where your head was violently shaken, or suspect someone else has had this type of injury, go to the emergency room immediately or call 911 for further assistance. It is recommended that you do not wait. Severe brain injuries can become worse and could become fatal if not treated immediately.

Common symptoms of traumatic brain injury are as follows:

Spinal fluid coming out of the ears or nose, looking like thin, watery liquid
Loss of consciousness
Suspected concussion - not all concussions cause loss of consciousness
Severe dizziness or loss of balance
Dilated eyes
Loss of vision, or change in vision, either improved or reduced
Slow pulse
Slow breathing
Vomiting
Lethargic
Headache
Confusion
Numbness or tingling sensations in any parts of the body

Different Types of Traumatic Brain Injury

Depending on how severe the injury is, the brain can suffer many types of injuries. Some of the more common classifications of such injuries include:

Diffuse Axonal Injury - This type of injury seems to be more common with the rapid movement of the head as occurs with Shaken Baby Syndrome. It usually happens because the skull is moving faster than the brain, causing certain structures in the brain to tear. This injury can be temporary or permanent, causing a coma or even possibly producing fatal effects.

Concussion - A concussion can be caused by violent action toward the head, by severe blows, or a whiplash effect. This type of injury causes blood vessels to stretch. It’s one of the more common types of brain injuries, and a concussion can take months or even years to fully heal.

Contusion - Again, this type of traumatic brain injury will happen with a violent action at the head. The injury is caused by bruising or bleeding on the brain. If the injury is severe and there is much bruising and bleeding, it can require surgery to correct.

Acquired Brain Injury

An acquired brain injury occurs any time after birth and is not induced by birth trauma or hereditary. This type of injury occurs on a cellular level. Such an injury can affect the entire brain, rather than a limited area like a traumatic brain injury.

Such injuries can occur for any of the following reasons: air obstruction, chocking, throat swelling, near drowning, electrical shock, trauma to the head, severe blood loss from open wounds, heart attack, stroke, infectious diseases, Meningitis, AIDS, brain tumors, toxic exposure, illegal drug use, overdose of drugs, alcohol abuse.

Symptoms of Acquired Brain Injury

Because this type of brain injury is internal, you might have a harder time trying to identify the symptoms. Some of the more common symptoms for acquired brain injury are:

Impairment of function, motor skills or memory
Long lengths of time spent in a still, ‘vegetative’ state
Sudden or severe behavior changes or problems - depression, restlessness, anxiety, psychosis, etc

As with traumatic brain injury, if you suspect someone may have acquired brain injury, call 911 or get the person to the emergency room right away.

Different Types of Acquired Brain Injury

Anoxic Brain Injury - This type of injury occurs when the brain is deprived of oxygen. There are three types of anoxia: Anoxic which is no oxygen is getting through, anemic which means severely limited amounts of oxygen is getting through, and toxic which means something is blocking the oxygen in the blood from being used in the brain.

Hypoxic Brain Injury - This sort of brain injury occurs when the brain does get oxygen, but doesn’t seem to get enough oxygen. It could happen because of lack of blood flow or blood pressure is weak.

If you should suffer from any symptoms listed, have suffered a blow to the head or you suspect that you or someone you know may have any form of brain injury, seek medical treatment right away. Call 911 if you see someone who has had an injury to the head, even if that person says they are fine.  When caught early enough, many types of brain injuries are treatable.

Why you should get a goldfish

We all like having a pet. From dog to cat lovers to lovers of the snake, not a pet for everyone. While everyone wants to have a pet, a lot of people do not have the time or ability to care for them. Dogs, cats and birds need lots of love and attention that some people simply do not have. For people who want a pet, but not sustained attention or expensive products. Goldfish are available in abundance some of the great races and specialty goldfish can be costly. However, these are the types few people have in themselves. Goldfish and common home is cheap and you can leave the store with it in a plastic bag!

pet vet bills fours can often be very high. They need a lot of shots, medications, special foods, and may get sick often. Fortunately, goldfish never need to see a vet for you will not have to spend all that money on a vet.

Goldfish care and maintenance is least demanding time and perhaps of all pets. Without preparation, no training, not only clean walk-a bowl and put in some foods. They make for pets useful for those seeking a lifestyle simple or too busy to care for a dog or a cat. Feeding goldfish is not so upset and takes only minutes to put in some flakes and granules in the cup. Despite not being able to give much feedback or emotions, gold fish are still fun and relaxing to watch. Some goldfish can also learn to respond to sounds and signals you to swim and feed for sweets. Goldfish can be a pleasure to watch as they swim around the aquarium aimlessly strutting in his brilliant and fascinating colorful hide.

On the other hand, when a goldfish dies, you just wash it down the toilet. Dead goldfish can be eliminated very comfortably with a single download. Electric Flux Gauss Law

October 25th, 2009

electric flux gauss law

Please help me for these multiple questions, I have an final tomorrow, thank you?

1. According to Gauss’ Law
a)electric flux depends on the shape of the surface enclosing the electric charge.
b)electric flux through any closed surface is proportional to the charge enclosed.
c)electric flux depends on the magnetic field.
d)there are magnetic monopoles.

3. Which one of the following is true for a plane electromagnetic wave traveling along the z direction?
a)E, B, z form a right handed system of vectors.
b)E, B, z form a left handed system of vectors.
c)E and B are parallel.
d)B and z are parallel.

4. A covalent bond like the bonds between C atoms in diamond is formed by
a)the Coulomb attraction between a positive and a negative ion.
b)the dipole-dipole interaction between neutral atoms.
c)attraction between exposed protons in hydrogen atoms.
d)a pair of electrons shared between two atoms.

1) a Gauss’ Law intergal [ E dot dA ] = 4*pi * q(enc) B is also correct but a is “more” correct.
3) a dell cross E = B so E and B will be perpendicular and obey the right hand rule. c is wrong because E and B are never parallel d is wrong becuase that is the direction of the wave ( or k vector )and the electric and magnetic field are perpendicular to that (k vector)
4) I am unsure but I would guess a

Do Not buy Proform

Do not buy proform. this machine came in a big box with stuff allover the place. It’s take a minimum of two hours to put up, if you are handy. The plastic cover for the front bars would not screw close enought, so it’s hanging lose. The consol does not even work. It’s a nightmare. Calling proform is no help. The hanged up on me 3xs. Call Orin the other number, nothing they can do to help. I am going to send this back

BuyingProForm 850 SpaceSaver Elliptical Trainer

Do NOT buy Pro Form, cheaply assembled internals

Do NOT by this, cheaply made internals, after two years of use developed a LOUD squeaking/grinding noise. Can be heard through out entire house, so can’t use when anyone else is around. Loud music on headphones will not cover up the noise. Took it apart and the end caps on the axle were not pressed on properly, causing axle to grind against bearings, completely unfixable. The unit was used less than 150 times before it failed (4 times a week). WASTE OF MY MONEY.

CheapProForm 850 SpaceSaver Elliptical Trainer

Stay Away from this product - Do Not even Consider…

I had a pro form almost two years ago (earlier model), I paid 1/2 what I paid for the 850. It lasted about a year and a half. I used it about 1/2 hr a day 5 days a week, when it broke I decided to spend a bit more and get the 850, after reading the reviews I was a bit hesitant: things like slightly wobbly, and loud raised flags, but I thought, “it’s probably not that bad” BIG MISTAKE, ITS WORSE!!! The thing is absolutely a piece of junk. not worth $49.99, much less the approximate $499.99 I paid for it.
Wobbly is an understatement. The thing feels like it going to break… handlebars shake, the whole frame sways (and yes I tried removing third leg, advice from previous reviewer, not much of a difference).
Loud, another understatement. It just sounds absolutely horrendous… it clanks and groans, the handle bars slap the center of the frame and make a really annoying noise as do the pedals when in use.
I’ve never felt so cheated, the thing is just not worth it.
However… it you don’t plan on actually using it, it does look nice(lol).

=======================================================================

Elliptical Trained me

This would of got 5 stars but, I had to fiqure out myself to take off the center foot to prevent excessive wobbling. Poor design on the feet but works great if the center foot is taken off. Also had a couple of bolt holes that wasn’t tapped out properly, had to force in with channel locks and call customer service to get replacement bolts(cause they stripped out where the allen wrench goes in).

=======================================================================

good value

I purchased this elliptical to help me keep to my exercise goals in the coming cold weather. I was used to using a good machine at my office gym and was looking for something comparable but could not afford to spend a lot of money. So far the machine has been good and putting it together was not a problem as noted in some of the reviews. My only complaint is that it rocks a little while I am using it. This does not interfere in my workout and aside from that the quality is good for the money.

=======================================================================

Some assembly required - well worth the effort!

This unit is excellent for the money. The construction is rugged enough for someone like myself who said “supersize me” a few times too often. It doesn’t wobble under load, and offers very quiet and smooth operation. The space-saver feature is a real plus for me - I have a tiny house, and it easily folds into a small footprint - width 26″ x 40″ folded, and 66″ unfolded. The front rollers make it possible for one person to move. The instrument panel works well - basic, functional resistance controls and a few decent training programs (I get rather amused by the marketing features that makes some of these machines boast about having a zillion programs, which are often fluff, or unusable). Assembly took me 4 hours, working alone - the instructions were the most clearly written I’ve seen in a long time. If you’ve ever changed your car’s oil, you won’t find any challenges here. I was able to get it into my house with the aid of a 2 wheel hand truck - two people (or opening the box outdoors) may be required.

If we take a look at the numerous celebrities who claim to have achieved the kind of body they have always dreamed of through celebrity colon cleansing diets, then we might end up convinced that these diet plans really work. Nevertheless, doing your own research on colon cleansing diets will make you understand that our body has its natural way of detoxifying itself – through regular excretion. However, we can either enhance or hamper the effectiveness of this natural detoxification process through the food we eat. And this is what we should keep our eyes on to.

Colon cleansing diets of the stars typically involve eating the right kinds of food – this means including lots of fruits and vegetables into their diet. We might even hear them going on a vegetarian diet. Drinking lots of water or about six to eight glasses of water each day is also part of most celebrity colon cleanse diets.

There is really nothing fabulous or grand about celebrity colon cleansing diet plans. They are simply well-balanced meals made famous by the media personalities we have always looked up to. From movie stars to TV stars to talk show hosts, everyone seems to be starting to go back to basics and is beginning to observe well-balanced meals supplemented by the ample intake of water and natural fruit juices.

Allergies and Asthma

The immune system is composed of many different organs, cells, and molecules. During an allergic reaction, the white blood cells, including T-helper cells, B-cells (which produce antibodies), and accessory cells, such as macrophages and mast cells, are involved. Antibodies are protein-based structures that bind to allergens, which are also often proteins or protein fragments themselves. The antibody that is the cause of all classic allergic reactions is IgE (Immunoglobulin E). IgE’s normal function is to fight parasites in the human body. This may be a main reason why people in developed countries tend to have more allergies than people in developing countries: the environment of developed countries is relatively parasite-free, and thus “too clean”. One of the emerging theories is that: the IgE antibodies in humans, who live in developed countries, have nothing to fight against except foreign substances in the body, such as pollen, food, and certain drugs.

During the first exposure to an allergen, B-cell bound IgE antibodies that are specific to the allergen bind to it, which then triggers a change in the B-cell to make more IgE antibodies specific to that allergen. Some of these allergen-specific antibodies end up binding to another immune cell called a mast cell, which contains large amounts of the inflammatory hormone histamine. Mast cells are found both in mucous membranes, such as on the mouth and lungs, and also in connective tissue. However, during the first immune reaction, the IgE antibodies will simply bind on the surface of mast cells and sit there, waiting for the second round of allergen to bind to the antibody on its surface. When a second allergen exposure occurs, the immune system is ready for the threat: the allergen will bind to IgE antibody on the mast cells, which then are programmed to release inflammatory molecules, including histamine. Histamine is a main cause of allergic symptoms.

The four common allergic reactions are: food allergies, bronchial asthma, atopic dermatitis (eczema), and rhinitis, or hay fever (1); the two main topics in this article will focus on food allergies and bronchial asthma. Only about 1% of Americans have a true food allergy (2), but they can be a serious problem for those who have them. As the Roman Lucretius said in 50 B.C. “What is food to one person may be bitter poison to others”. This saying has later evolved into the more current one: One man’s food is another man’s poison. The most common food allergens are: eggs, wheat, and cow’s milk. Yeast and yeast-containing products, pork, beef, and corn are also common allergens.

Allergy to pork and beef may actually be sensitivity to the inflammatory fats in those foods. There could also often be a sensitivity to additives in the foods above, such as monosodium glutamate (MSG), aspartate and/or phenylalanine (Nutrasweet), nitrates and nitrites, or sulfates and sulfites. In addition some foods and drinks such as strawberries, chocolate and coffee may not be true allergens, but may contain a good amount of the inflammatory hormone histamine. Foods and drinks like those mentioned above may also contain chemicals that trigger histamine release in the body through non-traditional allergic pathways. Interestingly, alcoholism may be linked with food allergies (3). There are several theories for the origins of chemical sensitivity, including: enzyme damage and/or depletion, pollution, immune-system-mediated damage, yeast overgrowth (candidiasis), chronic inflammation, carbon monoxide poisoning, and sensitization of key parts of the nervous system (4).

Allergies may also be worsened by incomplete digestion of food, particularly protein. Normally, proteins are digested in the stomach into very small chains of amino acids, which are further degraded into individual amino acids in the small intestine. The amino acids are then absorbed in to the bloodstream. The immune system does not react against individual amino acids. In fact, the smallest amino acid chain (called a peptide) that can be recognized by an antibody are three linked amino acids. However, incomplete digestion in the stomach and small intestine may not be able to break down all proteins into individual amino acids. If there is any “leakiness” in the wall of the small intestine, some of the small peptides could enter the bloodstream later. Since the immune system is not trained to recognize these food peptides as harmless, it may initiate an allergic reaction against them. The above sequence of events is termed the “leaky gut syndrome” by holistic practitioners. Yeast may also contribute to leaky gut syndrome, since they can assume a mycelium form that can branch out into the intestinal walls (4).

If you suspect a food allergy, you can test for it at home. Take your resting pulse before a meal by putting your index and middle finger on the side of your other wrist. Look at a clock and count the pulse beats in one minute. Eat a small portion of the suspected food, wait twenty minutes, then take your pulse again for one minute. If your resting pulse has rose more than ten beats per minute, you are probably allergic to at least one of the ingredients in your last meal. Food allergy testing can also be done by eliminating a suspect food for several days or weeks, then reintroducing the food and observing any reactions. This technique is relatively safe, but may take a long time to complete, since only one type of food at a time can be reintroduced. A food rotation diet can also be tried, where foods that cause only mild to moderate reactions are eaten only once every 3-4 days. This allows the body and the immune system to recover somewhat between offending foods. I personally do not food rotation diets, unless the person has too restricted of a diet and must eat some allergenic foods.

Technologically speaking, conventional allergy testing is in many ways still in the stone age. The two main types of allergy tests are the skin test and the blood test. Skin tests may be more accurate than blood tests. However, a control for the skin test is often phenol, which is a highly toxic and carcinogenic chemical. Inhalation tests with the irritant Methacholine can determine how reactive a person’s airways are. Not only can this chemical induce asthma and related breathing problems, it can also be fatal. Some conventional allergy treatments can also be dangerous. Desensitization treatments involve either oral or injected allergens to hopefully produce a tolerance to the allergen. Unfortunately, desensitization therapy has also caused fatalities.

There are many different nutrients that can help relieve allergies and asthma. Vitamin C indirectly inhibits mast cells from releasing histamine (5). The bioflavonoid quercetin has antihistamine activity, but it is not easily absorbed (6). A magnesium deficiency can aggravate allergies (6). Unfortunately, many allergy medications lower magnesium levels (7). Some nutritionists and doctors believe that taking vitamin B3 (niacin) is useful for people with allergies. Niacin releases histamine, often causing a reddened facial flush soon after the vitamin is ingested. Repeated dosing with niacin may eventually lower the body’s stores of histamine. In theory, this may then lower the intensity of any allergic reaction in the future (3). The above natural therapies have obvious advantages over many of the synthetic antihistamines on the market, such as Benadryl. One study found that driving after taking the first-generation antihistamine Diphenhydramine (Benadryl) can cause impairment equivalent to driving drunk (2).

There is a theory of cerebral allergies, in which allergens cross the blood-brain barrier. The resulting allergic reactions can such symptoms such as: headache, anxiety, dizziness, and depression (3). Since children do not have a completely formed blood-brain barrier, they may be particularly susceptible to cerebral allergies. This may lead to behavioral problems and inability to cope with stress (8). In fact, one of the most important things a person with allergies can do is avoid stress. Stress itself can cause the internal release of histamine (9).

Many inhaled allergens cause symptoms of coughing, difficulty breathing, and wheezing. These are symptoms of bronchial asthma. Asthma is the leading cause of chronic illness in children (2). About 30% of asthma is caused by non-immune reactions, including: cold, drugs, and even exercise (1). Antihistamines are not used to treat asthma (asthma is usually treated with either steroids or stimulants). Many people take bronchodilators to open up their airways during an episode of asthma; however, this is increasingly being discouraged. Overuse of bronchodilators can cause desensitization of the drug receptors (drug tolerance), which means a person must use more and more of the inhaler to get the same airway-opening effect. In some cases, when a person really needs the bronchodilator to work, it may not, and the person can die. In fact, asthmatics who frequently use bronchodilators are 2 ½ times as likely to die from an asthma attack as asthmatics that don’t use a bronchodilator (10). As you have read from the information above, there are many natural alternatives for drug use to control allergies and asthma. A person with allergies and/or asthma has to work hard to find the sources of their condition, but in the end it is worth their time and effort.
