Contagious Flu Tamiflu

contagious flu tamiflu

i have swine flu- questions?

i haven’t been diagnosed by a doctor, however my mums a nurse and i have all the symptoms. i am on tamiflu. i felt really ill saturday and sunday with a temp of nearly 40 but today i felt fine. my temps still a bit up (most recently 37.7) but i really want to go to school ttomorrow my mums only going to let me go if i don’t have a temperature. if i ddon’thave a temp does that mean im no longer contagious? if my temperature is still up is there any way i can lower it to fool her? thankyou! :D xx

Just listen to your mother. How would you feel if you got one of your best friends sick by going to school with the flu? My son started preschool this month, and a girl in his class was out for an entire week before being allowed back. Just stick it out til you do get better. If school is really that important to you, just have your friends get your work for you and bring it to you through your mother.

As little contact with other people as possible will help the flu go faster.

24 Hour Flu Symptoms

September 23rd, 2001

24 hour flu symptoms

Bird Flu True to Form? A Pandemic Scenario

Lee tried to stifle a sneeze but couldn’t. Invisible to the naked eye, a cloud of almost five thousand virus-filled droplets launched into the air at some 150 km/ hour or roughly 100 mph. Some passengers in the wide-body Airbus frowned. The Hong Kong to London flight was long and no one wanted to catch a cold.

Lee planned to fill every waking moment of his stay in London. A concert at the Millennium Dome, dinners at some of the finest hotels, shopping in crowded malls — “What a chance,†Lee thought. All he had to concentrate on was a few hours in front of the International Board. It was his job to present sales trends in China to the bosses who were also winging it towards Heathrow, one of the world’s busiest airports. “The global executives will get only good news from me,†figured Lee. “Pity I don’t feel better …â€

The Diagnosis

Lee was exhausted. He had a cough, scratchy throat, runny nose and muscle aches. A fever started but it wasn’t until Lee began having difficulties breathing that he decided to get help.

Doctors huddled in subdued discussion. Experts were rushed in. It was finally determined that Lee’s body was fighting strenuously against two viruses. Lee had caught a highly infectious Influenza A virus — a flu bug. However, at much the same time he had also picked up a second virus called H5N1. The two viruses had mixed their genes and formed a hybrid. Since this was now a radically new pathogen, Lee had no immunity to it.

Lee was not the only one in this fight. Infected passengers from Lee’s plane from Hong Kong had connecting flights to major cities in most continents. The global executives Lee had addressed at the office had also flown home diseased. Sadly, some of the medical staff where Lee was diagnosed had also caught it not to mention the crowds Lee had interacted with at concerts, restaurants and on shopping sprees. The so-called Bird Flu or Avian Influenza had indeed spread its wings. It was the start of the first flu pandemic of the 21st century.

The News

Had Lee or any of the others known in time, they would have taken anti-viral drugs hoping to block or at least slow down the replication of the virus. At least the severity of some symptoms might have been eased not to mention a reduction in the duration of sickness. But time had run out - anti-viral medication needed to be taken within 48 hours of the first stages of the disease.

It wasn’t long before Lee was put on a respirator in quarantine. It also wasn’t long before the media found out Lee had Bird Flu. The public became nervous. The number of flu patients — real or imaginary — multiplied dramatically but nurses and hospital staff were strangely missing … using overdue holiday time or just not showing up for work at all. It was announced that schools, restaurants, and non-essential businesses would be closed. No deadline was given — no one knew for sure how long the measures would have to be in place.

The Public Announcement

Wisely, the public was advised to stock up on food and water. Newspapers advised people to stock up on toothpaste, toilet paper and treasure (cash). People were told to shop at off-peak hours and public transport was ordered to run 24 hours per day. But despite warnings to the contrary, doctor’s offices, hospitals and clinics were overrun. Faces masked in paper waited for hours in front of pharmacies in hope of getting relief. Despite clear instructions from health officials, panic broke out as folk finally fathomed that at best only one third of the population had access to anti-viral drugs. In rural areas and smaller towns, there wasn’t any chance at all.

The Short-term Havoc

Rumors and half-truths began to circulate causing public outcry and protests. Because the protests only helped spread the flu, quarantines were set in place. The public was told to stay at home indefinitely. Vibrant cities screeched to a halt as public transport shut down. Streets stank as garbage piled up. Shops were looted and in some cases those caught coughing were stoned. Safety services (fire, police, ambulance) were disrupted, fires burned out of control. Cross-border travel was curtailed killing tourism and all international sports events were cancelled. Food imports were banned creating shortages of meat, vegetables and wheat. Folk with chronic medical illnesses couldn’t get their medications. Soap and disinfectants — perhaps the simplest and most effective fight against the spread of disease — were in short supply; no one had thought to stock-pile soap.

The Controversy

Local governments and health organizations began to squabble over who had the power to do what. The question was of legalities: who would control distribution of anti-viral drugs and who would receive those drugs? Army barracks received attention but prisoners were ignored. Families with pets were labeled as ‘higher risk’ groups but no-one knew if these families should receive more help or less. As in-fighting became more severe, decision processing became more difficult. Who should give the daily press briefings? Who would organize mass cremation? Who would facilitate conferences for global medical meetings? The list grew rapidly.

The Waves

The first wave of the pandemic was over in three months time but not the shock. Bacterial disease such as cholera multiplied rapidly with catastrophic results across Africa and Asia. The longer-term, global recession began with the realization that supply-lines, manufacturing and food-production chains were desperately weakened through labor loss. Medical facilities were terribly understaffed. As usual, the poor had little chance of aid at all. And then came the second wave of Avian flu. It took over a year before the waves of sickness and death became controllable.

Lee actually survived it all. Although he “started†the pandemic, he also helped “end†it. Doctors used his blood to find the initial vaccine. Since Lee was also now immune, he not only volunteered to help where he could and also founded the World Association of Sensible Hygiene (WASH). More importantly, Lee and others like him helped disrupted societies regain their faith and hope and love. Since this was pandemic number 11 in the last 300 years, history had taught that it was inevitable that individuals and communities and countries would bounce back fairly quickly. But a bitter question remained. Would Lee and the rest of the world be better prepared for the next pandemic? Lee wondered that too as he bordered the wide-body Airbus destined for Mexico City.

Flu Contagious Tamiflu

September 23rd, 2001

flu contagious tamiflu

Husband had the flu and we have a 11 week old baby?

My husband started having symptoms on 1/26…he was put on Tamiflu and took his last pill on 2/2. By a miracle of God, my 11 week old baby and myself have not caught it, at least yet. From my research, the maximum length of time someone is contagious with the flu is 7 days from the first day of symptoms. I got the flu shot on the Monday after my husband started having symptoms (i know it takes 2 weeks to work but i figured why not). My son is fully breastfeed.

So, my question is…do you think we would have caught it by now? do you think we are out of the danger zone since it has been 11 days since my husband started having symptoms. My husband is doing my much better and I am even allowing him to sleep in our bedroom again! :) Thanks for your answers…I have been really stressed out about this!

He’s exclusively breastfed, so if your baby gets sick at all it will be a much milder version - more like a little cold instead of the flu.

Quarantine for dad was a good idea!

I probably would not worry about it much at all anymore… but if you’re going to worry about anyone, worry about yourself! Your son is quite well protected right now… and if by chance you do get sick, keep nursing him, it will protect him further! Just wash your hands extra, dont’ kiss his face/hands and try to cough/sneeze into a tissue and as far away as possible!

Swine Flu China Quarantine

November 14th, 2000

swine flu china quarantine

New Orleans mayor Ray Nagin is being held in quarantine in China for suspicion of Swine flu, poetic justice?

On the way back from a tax payer paid visit to China (called a economic summit), Mayor Nagin (the mayor of New orleans during katrina) gets held up and quarantined for sitting in close proximity to someone showing Swine flu symptoms. Is this “karma” for doing nothing while New Orleans was under assault by mother nature?
Death Scouter- Very well stated.
Hater police- Did you read the rest of the details or only the initial question itself? Get a clue half-wit.

Nagin was VERY busy…..

… he worked very hard to blame Bush and the federal government for the FACT that the hundreds of millions of dollars sent to New Orleans over the last 20 years FOR THE LEVEY SYSTEM were REDIRECTED to “pet projects” of N.O. local politicians… KNOWINGLY leaving the Levey systems outdated, sinking, and unprepared for Catagory 4+ hurricanes.

Flu Outbreak In 1918

August 10th, 2000

flu outbreak in 1918

Did you know that EDWARD ANTHONY MASEN….?

almost died of Swine Flu? But then Carlisle bit him and he became a vampire. and changed his name to Edward Anthony Masen Cullen. It’s true! The SPANISH INFLUENZA is the swine flu. There was an outbreak in 1918 of the swine flu. Go look it up. I thought that was sorta ironic. What do you think about this?

Pay attention to the news not gossip on the internet. Scientists have found that the swine flu strain we are dealing with currently is not directly connected to the spanish influenza. The Spanish Influenza was a type of avian flu. Though both flu occurances were caused by strains of A(H1N1) viruses, they are not directly related. Any reports you were seeing that it is were people over-reacting or trying purposefully to spread misinformation.

Swine Flu Package Insert

July 2nd, 2000

My ob wants me to get the H1N1 vaccine now that I’m pregnant?

Ever since I got pregnant people have been asking me if I’m going to get the swine flu vaccine… especially my doctor. I have a friend who’s ob gave her the package insert that comes with it and it says “not tested or recommended for pregnant or nursing women”! I personally don’t feel that I’m at high risk of getting the regular flu, much less the swine flu so why should I put myself in a position where I could lose the baby? I don’t work or go to school and am generally only around a select few people and I had no intention of getting this vaccine before I got pregnant. Is there anyone out there who would still take the risk of having a miscarriage and get the shot anyway?
All of the peope who’ve told me it’s safe and their baby is fine were in their last trimester when they got the vaccine… how many have gotten it in their fist trimester and still ok?

The pamphlet she got isn’t for H1N1, it is HIGHLY reccomended for pregnant AND breastfeeding women. I got it the other day and they said it is going to be just as safe as the seasonal flu vaccine and the CDC and ALL healthcare professionals are reccomending pregnant women to get it. You have a higher chance of contracting the virus and losing your life then you do from having a misscarriage from the vaccine. You are at extremely high risk for getting the flu and the H1N1 virus because your immune system is compromised.

The reason I am so pro vaccine is because a co-worker of mines wife got so sick from it that she gave birth at 5 months, the baby lived 5 hours and she died two days afterwards. Your body can’t fight off viruses the same way it can when you aren’t pregnant. Of the 18% of people that have died from the swine flu 6% of them are pregnant women, that is an insanely high risks of death. I got the shot, didn’t have a misscarriage, many women have and their baby’s are just fine.

You need to do research for yourself. The H1N1 vaccine is the same vaccine as the seasonal flu shot which have been given to pregnant women for years with no complications. If the flu had hit a few months sooner they would have just added it to the seasonal flu shot and noone would have even known. You need to talk to a health professional and check out certified websites for your information, not just go off of what SOMONE has said so you don’t put you and your baby’s life at risks. From all the research and evidence, there are no adverse side effects and that is a fact. Your doctor woudln’t push anything that would possibly kill your baby, and if you think she would you should probably find a new OB.

EDIT

How many weeks are you in your first? If I were you I’d wait until 16 weeks, just because risk of misscarraige in first trimester is high, and if you do happen to, you’ll think it was the vaccine. Risk of misscarriage in the second trimester is very rare and therefor you’ll probably feel better about getting it done then. Good luck. I was 17 weeks when I got mine and I’m doing great.

N1h1 Flu Symptoms And Treatment

October 30th, 1999

Tamiflu - No.1 Flu Treatment and Prevention

When you or someone in your family begins to experience flu symptoms, you have 48 hours to take action. Trust TAMIFLU, the number-one prescribed antiviral flu medicine*:

* For flu treatment: When taken within two days of experiencing symptoms, TAMIFLU works by helping to stop the flu virus from spreading inside the body
* For flu prevention: When you have been exposed to someone with the flu, taking TAMIFLU can help keep the virus from making you sick

TAMIFLU is not a substitute for the flu shot; vaccination is the first line of defense for flu protection.

TAMIFLU is Effective for Children and Adults.

In flu treatment studies of patients who took TAMIFLU within 48 hours of the first appearance of symptoms:

* Adults felt better 30 percent faster (1.3 days) than flu patients who did not take TAMIFLU
* Children felt better up to 26 percent faster (1.5 days) than flu patients who did not take TAMIFLU

TAMIFLU is indicated for the treatment and prevention of influenza in people 1 year and older.

Flu strains may vary from area to area, so if you are exposed to a strain of the flu that is not the same strain as the one your flu shot protects against, you may still get the flu.

TAMIFLU is a prescription medication for flu prevention and treatment in adults and children aged 1 year and older.

  • TAMIFLU is available in pill form
  • TAMIFLU is also available in a fruit–flavored liquid form with a dosing dispenser for children 1 year and older and for adults who have difficulty swallowing the capsule.
  • TAMIFLU can be taken with or without food. As with many medicines, if you take TAMIFLU with a light snack, milk, or a meal, the potential for an upset stomach may be reduced.

Swine Flu Swab

October 2nd, 1999

Are Labour or the media telling the truth about swine flu?

how can you properly diagnose someone with swine flu over the phone with out taking blood test or a throat swab and sending the swab/blood for test at a lab and waiting for the results from the cultures

Up to about 3 days ago we’ had:

Swine flu reaches pandemic proportions.

The Government plans to vaccinate the whole UK population

Don’t go to work if you suspect you have swine flu

Don’t send your child to school if you suspect they have swine flu

Schools close doors after suspected swine flu case.

Now, after putting the fear of God up the whole population we get:

“Don’t get the threat posed by swine flu out of proportion”

I think it’s a case of “For fecks sake - MAKE YOUR MINDS UP!!!!

Edit: Beastie Used to be - retired now. What’s really annoying is my lad is even better (must be in the genes) and I have to wear glasses these days - which he finds hilarious!!
