Swine Flu Symptoms In Toddlers
Toddlers and the swine flu?
I live in Montana. I am in high school and a friend of mine just got back from Texas and she now has the swine flu. I am a teen mom. I am really scared that my daughter will get it through me and she is only 16 months old. So my question is is the swine flu as dangerous as the news makes it out to be? Is anyone else in ”panic” mode because of this flu? or am I the only one? What are the earliest symptoms I would notice if she gets it?
If you haven’t been in contact with the friend, great. If you have been, don’t be in contact with him/her for the near future.
Based on what people are saying, there’s no real need to panic. Still, if a baby/toddler gets any flu it can always be dangerous. Based on recent news it appears to be a milder form of illness than was thought. Still, babies are always at higher risk if they get a respiratory infection.
The most recent word is that schools are not closing, but people are telling anyone with flu symptoms not to go to school.
Any symptoms of being sick (fever, cold symptoms) should be checked out by a doctor.
Now, more than ever, it’s a good idea to wash hands thoroughly and frequently, and to thoroughly clean surfaces. If you aren’t infected, and if she isn’t near the friend, she won’t get it (unless it were to show up somewhere like the infant seat in a shopping cart - which may be reason not to put her in one of those in the near future),
Listen to your area news, and if you have questions ask your baby’s pediatrician (even if your baby is not sick and you just want to know more about what you should be doing).

How To Avoid Catching Flu

How To Avoid The Flu When Traveling
How to Avoid the Flu when Traveling.
By Murray Grossan, M.D. Cedars-Sinai, Author of “The Sinus Cure”
The thought of getting sick when traveling with a new type of virus on
the loose is quite scary. A measure of good news is that by taking
some common sense steps you can dramatically increase your chances of
staying healthy.
My patient, EJ, hadnt flown in 5 years because she would be sick for
a week after every flight. As though fate was against her, she always
managed to sit next to the person on the flight who was coughing and
had never heard of Kleenex.
Most airplanes today recirculate the air. There was a comparison of
flights with filtered and unfiltered fresh air, which actually showed
that there was little observable difference both found about a 20%
incidence of common cold and flu among passengers who fly. This 20% is
much too high to be an acceptable number. In fact, many of these cold
and flu cases are preventable.
The primary reason that you catch a cold or flu is failure of the
natural defense of the body Mucociliary Clearance system. This is the
protective system that grabs the virus and bacteria, and moves it by
nasal cilia action to the stomach where the acids kill the bacteria or
virus. Normally these cilia move at 15 pulses per second. They act as
oars to move a blanket of thin mucus inside the nose, where the virus
is trapped, out of the nose to the stomach. This prevents the virus
from infecting the body through the nose. But the key here is thin
mucus.
On commercial flights the air is quite dry. This dries the nose. So,
even if the cilia do their best, the mucus is still too thick to move.
Because it is stagnant, bacteria and viruses can multiply and enter
the body. Therefore it is vital to intake adequate fluids during
flight. These fluids do not include alcohol and coffee. What is needed
is warm water, preferably a green tea with mint and lots of it!
Lemon and honey are also good. Warm tea with or without caffeine helps
move the cilia. Ice drinks slow the cilia. Since the key here is
moisturizing the nose, a nasal moisturizing gel is beneficial.
Many ordinary medications may dry the nose. For my patients I find
that certain types of nasal moisturizing gels are best. The reason the
gels are best is that in order for the virus to enter the body it must
attach to a nasal protein called ICAM-1. A gel with the appropriate
formulation can help to prevent this attachment. The best gels have
ingredients which allow the body’s natural defense elements
lysozyme, good white blood cells, etc., to be able to travel to where
they are needed to fight invading organisms in this way. Read the
ingredients to see if your gel aids lysozyme action. For example,
Breathe-ease XL Nasal Moisturizing Gel is a water soluble gel that can
cover the nasal membranes and provide moisture to the area.
Avoid getting chilled as that will lower your resistance. Avoid undue
fatigue. For saline type sprays, use before boarding, and about every
two hours during the flight. With gels, use before boarding and about
every 3-4 hours during flight. In particular, use twice a day after
arrival as this will help fight any infection trying to get a
foothold. Don’t forget the liquid intake!
Some doctors may prescribe an antibiotic ointment that similarly
covers the nasal membranes, and as an antibiotic kills certain
bacteria. The problem here is that they are expensive, and most
require the use of fingers or a Q tip to get it positioned, and there
is the risk of developing a sensitivity or resistance to the
antibiotic. For example Breathe-ease XL nasal gel has an in the nose
applicator and only contains natural ingredients. Whatever gel or
ointment is used it MUST be water soluble, only water soluble products
should be used in the nose. Petroleum-based or other non-water soluble
materials could end up in the lungs, where they could remain
permanently.
Good hand washing is also crucial, and simply using soap and water is
best. Wash often to remove flu virus before you put your hands near
your eyes, mouth or nose.
One reason we typically get flu in winter is the depression that comes
with the dark days and cold. In fact, bright lights can actually lift
your mood and help the immune system. So staying up beat and getting
light is key!
Final tips. Avoid a meal three hours before sleep. Sleep is paramount
to keeping the immune system up. Try to keep an exact sleep schedule.
To set your sleep clock, go to sleep at the same hour and practice the
same habits every night wash face, brush hair, brush teeth, etc.
Safe travels and hopefully it is off to someplace sunny and warm..

The 10 Most Common Swine Flu (H1N1) Myths…You Better Know What They Are
The Swine (H1N1) Flu, just like any other virus infection, it too has its own myths. Here are the 10 most common ones. Don’t we already have enough to worry about without imagining things? Why worry about things that are not even true. Here are 10 of them.
Myth #1: If I wear a surgical mask, I will be protected from getting the H1N1 swine flu virus
Fact: While it is possible that wearing a surgical mask may be slightly helpful in preventing the “spread” of the swine H1N1 flu, it definitely will not guarantee you safe passage. However, if you are wearing the mask around others who are infected with the virus, it will help protect you from the germs of their sneezes and coughs. Otherwise, it can’t hurt to wear a surgical mask but just do not let yourself be lulled into a false sense of complete protection against the swine Flu virus.
Myth #2: You cannot die from the swine flu virus
Fact: Nothing is further from the truth. You can die from the swine flu virus. People across the world are dying from it everyday. However, so as not to overly alarm you, it must also be pointed out that most people will “not” die from it. The truth of the matter is that the H1N1 virus can prove fatal in people who have already have a compromised immune system. Some people get very sick from this virus while other only report mild symptoms. Please remember that it is vitally important that you take the anti-viral medication that will help reduce the intensity of your swine flu symptoms. Is is also extremely important to remember that you should avoid contact with other people for at least 24 hours after your fever subsides. You do not want to give it to anyone else.
Myth #3: Infection from the swine flu only happens if you have direct contact with a pig.
Fact: While it has been reported by the CDC that in the past, swine flu has been spread between people and pigs, this most likely occurred with pig farmers who were in constant close contact with their pigs. It is much more likely that the current swine flu is spread from human to human because of the liquid droplets and vapors that are expelled into the air from a contaminated person when they sneeze or cough. If you were to come into contact with these droplets, or anything that had these droplets on it, you have a good chance of becoming infected with the virus yourself.
Myth #4: We have never had an outbreak of the swine flu within the United States
Fact: This is not true. Throughout the years there has been several swine flu outbreaks in the United States. In 1967, five soldiers from Fort Dix, New Jersey were contact in an outbreak of the swine flu. All five of them became infected and one of them died. However, according to the experts, some of the conditions that worsened this swine flu outbreak was brought on by the fact that they were living in a very stressed conditions and very close military quarters. Also, in Wisconsin in 1988, there was a mild outbreak of the swine flu in heath care workers who worked in close proximity with their patients.
Myth #5: The elderly, young adults and the children are all equally at risk.
Fact: Apparently, it has come to light that ones immune system strength may not be a significant factor with the H1N1 virus. But, the jury is still out on this and is not certain. It is believed that, just like the avian flu and the SARS outbreaks, it is more a factor of how your own body reacts to the virus rather than the virus itself. But, it should also be kept in mind that the majority of cases investigated so far in the U.S. have proven to be rather mild. It really is uncertain how the young and healthy people in Mexico were dying. It has been suggested that perhaps the virus had already mutated into a stronger variation. It is also important to know that the antiviral medication TAMIFLU is proving to be a highly effective treatment for the swine flu, provided you see you doctor as soon as possible after getting sick.
Myth #6: Eating pork will increase your chances of getting swine flu.
Fact: The swine flu was named so because of a flu that pigs were getting in the Northern hemisphere. But, there is no correlation between swine flu and eating pork or pork products. However, you must remember that eating any not properly prepared or partially cooked meats will certainly increase your risk of bacterial infections and viruses. No, you do not get swine flu (H1N1) from eating pork of any kind.
Myth #7: The H1N1 virus is much riskier than the 2000-2003 SARS pandemic.
Fact: This is definitely “not” true. This pandemic caused 774 deaths before it was stopped. That’s approximately 10% of those infected with the virus! The United States had 10 or fewer deaths while the remainder are believed to be in China.
Myth #8: The seasonal influenza vaccination can help prevent the H1N1 virus infection.
Fact: The CDC has said that the anti-viral medicines and remedies along with the seasonal influenza vaccination can help decrease the “symptoms” of the H1N1 Swine flu, BUT, it is definitely not a preventive measure or cure. Only the H1N1 vaccines can do this job efficiently.
Myth #9: Tamiflu will cure the H1N1 virus.
Fact: This is definitely a bad myth as Tamiflu will help lessen your symptoms once you get the virus, but, it will not cure the flu.. The Tamilflu antiviral medication has been shown to decrease the length of your infection by a few days, but nothing else.
Myth #10: If I get a fever along with the other flu symptoms, that means I have the H1N1 swine flu and I need to get to the hospital or see a doctor.
Fact: If you are a normal healthy person it is actually suggested that you stay home rather than risk infecting others. However, if you are susceptible to asthma attacks, have a weakened immune system, or lung disease, it is suggested that you do seek medical attention as soon as possible.

Nhs Flu Pandemic

The so called Swine Flu ‘Panic’?
Is it just me or with all the reports about the people of Britain getting all freaked out about Swine Flu that the only people over-reacting are the medical professionals (NHS), the government and more than any the Press.
Every one I know and all the people I have seen interviewed on the news seem to agree that the illness is really no worse than the regular Flu and sure it’s killed people but so has the Flu and the only reason we are more aware of these deaths is because they have gotten a lot more coverage that the ones taken by seasonal Flu.
Is this just my opinion or are there other people out there who feel that the threat of the pandemic has been blown way out of proportion?
I agree that it has been blown way out of proportion, and the only good thing that came out of it is that it has gotten people to do what they should be doing everyday anyways, ie. Washing their hands regularly, not sharing food and drink, etc.
Flu pandemic - Don’t panic!

Onion Cures Flu

Influenza
Influenza, also known as flu, is the clinical condition that results from infection with influenza viruses. The main effects of the influenza viruses are on the upper respiratory tract, the nose and throat, with possible spread and involvement of the lungs and bronchi. The disease is highly contagious and it has the potential to cause a widespread epidemic, affecting a sizeable portion of a population at any time.
Causes:
The flu usually begins abruptly, with a fever between 102 and 106 °F. (An adult typically has a lower fever than a child.) Other common symptoms include a flushed face, body aches, chills, headache, nausea, and lack of energy. Some people have dizziness or vomiting. The fever usually lasts for a day or two, but can last 5 days.
Somewhere between day 2 and day 4 of the illness, the whole body symptoms begin to subside, and respiratory symptoms begin to increase.
Symptoms:
The most prominent of the respiratory symptoms is usually a dry, hacking cough. Most people also develop a sore throat and headache. Nasal discharge (runny nose) and sneezing are common. These symptoms (except the cough) usually disappear within 4 - 7 days. Sometimes, the fever returns. Cough and tiredness usually last for weeks after the rest of the illness is over.
Dry cough
Fever - may be high
Headache
Muscle aches and stiffness
Sore throat
Stuffy, congested nose
Tiredness
Other symptoms may include:
Chills
Croupy cough
Dizziness
Fatigue
Loss of appetite
Malaise
Nasal discharge
Shortness of breath
Sweating
Vomiting
Worsening of underlying illness, such as asthma or heart failure
Wheezing
Home Remedies:
Influenza treatment using Long Pepper:
The use of long pepper is one of the most effective remedies in the treatment of influenza. Half a teaspoon of the powder of long pepper, mixed with two teaspoons of honey and half a teaspoon of juice of ginger, should be taken thrice a day. This will help greatly if taken in the initial stages of the disease. It is especially useful in avoiding complications which follow the onset of the disease, namely, the involvement of the larynx and the bronchial tube.
Influenza treatment using Garlic:
Garlic is an excellent remedy for influenza. It is useful as a general antiseptic and the patient should take as much as he can bear.
Influenza treatment using Turmeric:
Turmeric is valuable in curing influenza. A teaspoon of turmeric powder should be mixed in a cup of warm milk and taken three times a day. It will prevent complications arising from influenza, and also activate the liver which becomes sluggish during the attack.
Influenza treatment using Onion:
Onion is also an effective remedy for influenza. Equal amounts of onion juice and honey should be mixed, and three or four teaspoons of this mixture should be taken daily in the treatment of this disease.
Influenza treatment using Ginger:
Ginger is an excellent remedy for influenza. A teaspoon of fresh ginger juice, mixed with a cup of fenugreek decoction and honey to taste, is an excellent diaphoretic mixture which increases sweating and reduces fever in this disease. The fenugreek decoction may be prepared by boiling one tablespoon of fenugreek seeds in half a litre of water, till it is reduced by one third.
Influenza treatment using Grapefruit:
The juice of grapefruit has proved useful in this disease as it tones up the body and the digestive tract.
Tea Remedy Combine equal parts of elder, peppermint, and yarrow. Then, steep 1-2 teaspoons of the tea mixture into a cup of hot water. It is best to drink this hot before bedtime. The not liquid induces sweat which helps stop the growth of influenza. Cayenne, cinnamon, and ginger can also be added to help either induce even more sweat, or to stimulate the body’s circulation.
Ayurvedic Medicines for the Treatment of Influenza:
1.Eucalyptus oil is used in many forms to stop the symptoms of fever, and can be used as part of the treatment for influenza.
2.Flucon tablets are available for combating the symptoms of influenza, including the cleaning of upper respiratory tracts, and the discontinuation of coughing and sneezing. These tablets have no side effects, and include a mixture of ingredients such as tinospora cordifolia, uraria picta, and a form of cinnamon. It is preferred with honey or lukewarm water. Also, there is no side effects at all.
3.Anand Bhairav Rasa is another herb that can be made into various forms to treat influenza.

Knowledge and Persistence leads to success
I have always been fascinated by the question ,why some people can and others can’t? I spent years trying to figure this out. At first it was mainly for myself. I remember growing up with little confidence and under the impression that others were more capable than I was. The fact was that this impression was true. It was true because i believed it.

H1n1 Flu Nj

Should people avoid visiting New York with kids this summer 2009 due to the swine flu?
Having heard the NJ, NY schools have warned that the second wave of the H1N1 has arrived and may have the third wave, should people avoid visiting New York with kids right now?
Medical experts and NONE New Yorkers opinions are probably more advisable. Please provide your comments.
Not unless you’re also going to keep them inside the house all summer with no visitors allowed!! It’s just the flu - people with compromised immune systems or other risk factors die from the flu every year, not just from the “swine” flu. Your kids are exposed to germs everyday - at the mall, at school, with their friends, etc, etc.
