How many of you know about the Spanish Flu pandemic of 1918?
I’ve known about it along time since my grandfather from my foster family was in World War I. What I DIDN’T know was the Spanish Flu was a type H1N1. That is the swine flu we got going around now. I did not know “Twilight” had something about the Spanish Flu. Someone tell me about it please. I’m an old woman and did not read it or go see the movie. My daughter did though.
This problem arises because people, even the media, wrongly assume that H1N1 is synonymous with this year’s swine flu. It isn’t. The WHO calls it 2009 A/H1N1 or 2009 pandemic H1N1. The key words there are “2009″ and “pandemic” not H1N1.
H1N1 just indicates the subtype of the virus. There are lots of H1N1 subtypes. 3 different strains of H1N1 caused the 1918 and 2009 pandemics and the 1976 “swine flu” scare. H1N1 is also one of the two main subtypes that causes seasonal flu, the other being H3N2.
What made the 1918 H1N1 strain exceptional was its virulence. It had the ability to easily (and preferentially) kill young healthy people. In that respect it bears more in common with the highly pathogenic avian H5N1 strain. Bird flu has the virulence needed to cause a catastrophic pandemic, swine flu has the transmission. The 1918 virus had both, which allowed it to kill around 50 million people.

The pandemic caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a major event in human history. This calamity of the 20th century can be grouped together with the two world wars according to the number of casualties and harm to society. Like a war, AIDS suddenly assailed humanity and continues to advance, striking new countries and continents. But unlike military acts, HIV spread unnoticeably, and people took note of it only when it mortally struck millions of people.
The disease and its consequences are catastrophic for humanity. By 1995 all but ten countries on earth have declared cases of HIV infection. Consequently, prevention of the pandemic’s results has become a shared problem for the global community.
Other infections in history have had consequences more severe than the HIV infection. However, people were able to take measures against them or at least suppress them using quarantine measures, vaccines and antibiotics.
In the past the flu always took its yearly toll, malaria held a firm grip in tropical areas, and cholera occasionally struck out, but nevertheless people remained confident that improvement of medicine will overcome these afflictions in the near future. The general opinion was that improvement of living standards and progress of civilization had eliminated many factors that caused pandemics.
However, the HIV infection is different than previous health concerns. Humanity feels completely helpless in the face of this unfamiliar and cunning enemy. This has caused another epidemic that has spread over the globe: fear of AIDS.
The world was shocked by the fact that the USA was one of the first and most vulnerable countries to be affected by AIDS. The disease has brought many values of modern Western civilization into question, especially sexual freedom and freedom of mobility. AIDS has posed a challenge to the entire modern way of life.
Other “murderers” of the 21st century are the Lassa fever, the Rift Valley Fever, the Marburg fever, the Bolivian hemorrhagic fever and the well-known Ebola virus. Their danger is often exaggerated, but we also shouldn’t underestimate them. With the development of bacteriological weaponry, these diseases can be genetically modified and transformed into an absolute instrument of death. Modern medicine will be helpless if such “modified” viruses are quickly dispersed in densely populated areas. This can put humanity back into the Stone Age, or even eradicate it from the face of the Earth.
Of the 58 million deaths forecasted by experts of the World Health Organization, 35 million deaths will result from chronic diseases. This is twice the number of deaths due to all infectious diseases put together, including HIV, malaria, and tuberculosis. The top four are cardio-vascular diseases, cancer, chronic respiratory illnesses and diabetes. 80% of deaths due to chronic illnesses take place in underdeveloped countries, where most of the world’s population lives. The Russian Federation is one of them. According to experts’ estimates, between 2005 and 2015 the national budget will be $300 billion short due to a premature death rate cause by heart attacks, strokes, and diabetic complications. China’s economy will suffer an even greater damage, about $558 billion.
The World Health Organization (WHO) report underlines that the current level of medical knowledge is enough to overcome this problem. However, insufficient efforts are being made on the global scale. This is especially true of the problem of smoking (every year about 4.9 million people die from diseases related to tobacco use) and the obesity epidemic (1 billion people are obese). In Russia one out of three babies is born with an illness. The death rate of children in Russia is much higher than in the West, and the number of disabled people is growing. Over the last 40 years humanity has received 72 new infections, and two or three new infections emerge every year. David Heyman, Director of the WHO Department of Infectious Diseases stated at the World Health Assembly that it is practically impossible to prevent the appearance of new deadly viruses, and that medics’ worst fear is that a new strain of the flu virus will emerge.
New viruses are continually being discovered. Diagnostics is improving, which facilitates discovery of new viruses and definitive ascertainment of “virus—illness” connections where they were previously questioned. This is part of the reason for the visible increase of viral infections. However, there is also another factor for this increase: drastic deterioration of the population’s immune system.

The days of daily removal and cleaning of an artificial eye are gone. Most ocularists and ophthalmologists now agree that if the ocular prosthesis is not causing irritation to the eye socket, it should be left alone. It may however require occasional lubrication depending on the function of the tear ducts or other natural lubricants of the eye socket. In fact, it is now believed that handling the ocular prosthesis can increase the chance of infection in the eye socket and it should only be handled when necessary. However, the area surrounding the eye socket such as the eye lid and eye lashes should be cleaned daily in order to remove buildup of the eye’s natural secretions. When cleaning this area, it is important to remember to only rub from the outside of the eye towards the nose as not to displace the prosthesis.
Occasionally, the artificial eye can acquire protein build ups or other irritants that may require its removal and cleaning. Before you begin this process, make sure that you thoroughly wash your hands with an antibacterial soap in order to lessen the chances of infecting the socket. To remove the artificial eye, simply pull down the lower lid and look upward, which allows the prosthesis to slide out over the lower lid. Make sure you place the palm of your free hand on your cheek to catch the prosthesis as it slides out. There are also suction cups available to help with the removal of an ocular prosthesis if needed. Once removed, it is important to keep the prosthesis wet with either water or saline solution so that any secretions on the eye do not dry on the surface of the prosthesis. The artificial eye can be gently cleaned with an antibacterial soap and a cotton ball. It is important not to use rubbing alcohol or any other harsh chemical as they can damage the ocular prosthesis.
If needed, you can also clean out the eye socket with a saline solution while the artificial eye is removed. Using a bulb syringe and sterile saline solution, both of which can be found at any drug store, simply flush the eye socket to remove any debris or build up. Once the artificial eye and the eye socket have been cleaned, the ocular prosthesis can be reinserted by holding the prosthesis between the thumb and forefinger and with the other hard, lift the upper eye lid. Then, gently slide the top of the prosthesis under the upper eye lid and hold in place while you pull down the lower eye lid with your other hand so that it slips over the bottom of the prosthesis holding it in place.
Other than occasional at home cleanings, it is important to return to your ocularist once or twice a year in order to have the eye checked, professionally cleaned and polished. This will help ensure a natural look and increase the longevity of the ocular prosthesis. Plus, the ocularist will be able to detect the subtle changes in the prosthesis or socket that may require an adjustment.
Artificial eyes are relatively low maintenance prosthesis and actually benefit from limited care due to decreased risk of damage or infection. For this reason, an ocular prosthesis is easy to care for and maintain and although the concept of removing an eye might seem overwhelming at first, it is rarely required and quality ocular prostheses are designed for simple removal, insertion and maintenance.

Why do people incorrectly blame Obama for misspeaking the Oath when ?
it was ROBERTS who flubbed it and Obama still said it correctly anyway.
If you watch. Roberts makes 2 mistakes.
1. He interrupts Obama AFTER pausing (as to give Obama the space to respond)
2. Roberts incorrectly cites the Oath and then Obama says NOTHING until Roberts corrects himself.

Why would anyone blame either of them? A lot was going on, and I’m sure it was just as momentous an occasion for Chief Justice Roberts as it was for President Obama.
I think that the President handled the situation with grace and dignity. He did not correct the Chief Justice nor did he embarass him. It was handled with the utmost decorum.
My mother got me an appointment, however I’m a little iffy about the vaccine.
I have heard the story about the vaccine linked to mercury and neurological disorders, and I realize that the severity of the Swine Flu is blown out of proportion.
However, I was talking with my Personal Trainer today and she recommended that I DIDN’T get the shot. She said there would ultimately be no point if I took care of myself. She said I was a healthy 17 year old, so I didn’t have to worry about dying from the Swine Flu or anything like that.
Still I’m not quite sure.

I went to Belize City a month ago, and came back with a bad case of stomach flu and was also diagnosed with a parasite. In the month that I was sick, I really didn’t eat much. Just bread and applesauce, fruits and veggies in VERY small portions. Now that I am feeling better (after taking Cipro for a week), it is very hard for me to eat.
