While there is currently no vaccine against H1N1 flu, you can take safety measures to help prevent the spread of germs both in the workplace and at home.
These simple guidelines can better protect the safety and health of your employees and their families:
H1N1 Flu Alert
In partnership with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the National Safety Council is reaching out to its members and other employers for help in the current H1N1 Flu outbreak. Businesses play a vital role.
To contain the possibility of an outbreak among your employees: Review your organization’s emergency and communication plans. Plans should establish policies about:
1 ) Employee compensation and sick-leave absences unique to a pandemic, including policies on when a previously ill person is no longer infectious and can return to work after illness. Even during the most severe pandemics, most people completely recover. Recovered workers will have immunity to the illness and can safely return to work.
2) Flexible worksites (telecommuting) and flexible work hours.
3) Employees who have been exposed to the flu, are suspected of being ill or become ill at the worksite.
4) Frequent hand washing with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing. Have an alcohol-based hand cleaner readily available.
5) Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
6) Avoid close contact with others who are sick.
7) Clean and disinfect shared work surfaces and office hot spots (i.e. faxes, microwaves, light switches, pens and time clocks) throughout the day.
Review your organization’s emergency and communication plans. Know what procedures to take if someone comes down with the flu.
9) If you feel sick, (fever with either cough or sore throat) inform your employer and healthcare provider. Stay home if you are sick for 7 days after your symptoms begin or until you have been symptom-free for 24 hours, whichever is longer. This is to keep from infecting others and spreading the virus further.
10) Follow local public health advice regarding school closures, avoiding crowds and other social distancing measures based on illness in specific communities.
11) If you haven’t developed a family emergency plan yet, consider developing one now as a precaution. This should include storing a supply of extra food, medicines, facemasks and other essential supplies.
What fish tank should I buy as a present for my husband who used to keep tropical fish?
It’s my husband’s 30th birthday next month and I hope to buy him an aquarium as he used to keep tropical fish tank, but hasn’t for the last few years I know he’d like to start back up again. This way he can get the tank on his birthday and start cycling it as I would’t know where to start.
My question is, what tank should I get? I know he wouldn’t expect a tank like his previous one (a metre long monster!) so I need something small and not cheap looking that will house some guppies (male/female) neon tetras and a cat fish so definitely not a big tank, just good quality. I know the likes of the fluval edge (which I really like) aren’t great as they’re too small, so what size would I need to keep the fish I know he’d like?
I’ve been to a few independent stores, and petsathome etc, and they all seem to have quite similar tanks - some do look quite plastic-y and I don’t like the biorbs because of the acrylic in them.

I did see a nice new model by Aqua One last time I went to Pets at Home (which isn’t very often, I prefer Maidenhead Aquatics, but PAH has cheaper bogwood, anyway I digress) .
It was only a 50L approx, so quite small in terms of volume so would have limited stocking, but it was very wide, much wider than average tanks, and had a sliding clear lid with light above - which is very “in” right now. I think it was part of the Horizon range, can’t find it on the website but I know I wasn’t imagining it as there was a group of us all cooing over it! If I was in the market for another small tank (which I’m not, sadly) I would pick up one of them. Here’s the 60L Horizon, the one I’m thinking of had less height but was a lot wider, so had a nice large footprint. The one in PAH came with a filter and heater as well as the light fitting.

I have two AquaOne 320s and an AquaStart 500, I like the Aqua One range of tanks, they are fairly well put together and the newer tanks with the curved corners at the front of the tank are a nice touch!

I’m not sure quite what I did. I was putting in my contacts and got the right one in just fine. When I put the left one in it burned like nothing I’ve felt before. It was like my eye was on fire. I took out my contacts but my eye was still sore. I think I either got something caught between my eye and the contact lens or I used disinfectant instead of saline by mistake.
Either way, I feel like I’ve got sand in my left eye and I can see a definite fluid filled blister in the corner of my eye where my sclera is, right next to my iris. It’s a pretty big one and it fills in a big area to the left of my iris. My mom says I should use eye drops and wait 24 hours to see if it heals on its own. Is there anything else I can do for it or does anyone have some advice? I’ve never gotten a blister inside my eye before.
Ouch. Well unfortunately eye drops probably won’t help. Flush the affected eye with pure cold water and then leave the eye alone. Call a doctor immediately or have your mom call because you might have something in your eye that you just can’t see. Go to an eye doctor and have them look at it as soon as possible, otherwise the damage to your eye may get worse and may be permanent. Your eye can get infected very easily and it’s very dangerous because the eye is in very close proximity to a very vital organ….the brain. Get it checked out today if you can.

I removed a fluorescent light and the fixture started smoking, what’s wrong?
I removed the bulbs from the flourescent light fixture above my office desk, there were 3 long tube lights inside of it. 32W sylvanias. After I removed the third light, the fixture started billowing white smoke for a few minutes until we shut off the lights, then it stopped. When I turned the lights all back on we have seen no more evidence of smoke. What happened? I was removing the lights because I’m getting a nicer desk lamp in my office and I didn’t have a switch for the fluorescents over my head (building controlled).
The only thing in a fluorescent fixture that could smoke would be the ballast. And they don’t usually do that without a load (the tubes) unless it’s defective. Why doesn’t your office have a light switch? By code it’s supposed to have title 24 switching. Sounds like you need to talk to your landlord.

My office has two fluorescent light fittings which buzz very loudly. Occasionally they make so much noise they have to be turned off. Management don’t appreciate the lights being off as it makes the building look unoccupied.
Repeated requests to fix this problem are being ignored. The only answer I get now is “well I asked so-and-so to do it”. So-and-so acknowledges the problem, but hasn’t done anything about it.
The noise is very difficult to work with. The problem is that they don’t buzz as loudly all the time - I think the lights know when a manager walks in and shut up!
Any suggestions as to what I can do with regard to making a formal complaint? Web searches have thus far turned up no answers

This is particularly true when a homeowner considers the value that an installed solar unit will add your investment. Increased values are fed not only by reduced energy bills these facilities produce, but are also fed by buyers concerns about what will happen with energy prices in the future. There is no doubt that we need to protect Mother Nature and it is important to us that our loved ones are protected also. Contrary to some beliefs, there are ways we can protect both the environment and our loved ones; not sacrificing one for the other. Most green burial, direct cremation, cremation costs, cremation or cremation services include the following standards: no burial vaults, no embalming, and no markers. Will we know where to take our grandchildren, and will they know where to take their children to go visit us? Just as there are hundreds of ways to go green during our daily lives, there are many ways to go green at a funeral. As with any event, much of the environment impact is in the details.
