1- It is a brand new vaccination

3- it was all made in such a rush
4- how do we know its safe?
5- how do we know there isnt any long term affects such as autism, blindness etc…

so many worries

whats your opininon?

Why did the mother that got the vaccination get thumbs down? She gave her answer in a polite way. Geez. Anyway I did not get it, nor my kids. I am open to it in the future though. Right now I am not comfortable with it.

Swine Flu Beginning Symptoms

June 23rd, 2009

swine flu beginning symptoms

Could this be the beginning of swine flu? I feel -?

weaker than usual kinda like I’m losing my balance when I walk,

Headache that feels like lots of pressure

slight fever

Feels like a ball of dust in the back of my throat when I wake up

no cough yet

no other symptoms yet

It sounds like you may be getting a cold to me. It’s possible that it could be the flu, though, so be watchful of your symptoms. It’s difficult to tell the difference between the regular flu and swine flu. Keep an eye on your temperature to make sure it doesn’t get too high and take Tylenol for the fever/achiness. Watch out for worrisome symptoms (very high fever, disorientation, constant nausea/vomiting that doesn’t cease after 48-72 hours, minimal urine output, etc.).

Most importantly, trust your instincts. If you end up getting very sick and think you need to go to the ER then go immediately. It’s better to be safe than sorry. Get plenty of rest, drink plenty of fluids, and eat well to try and boost your immune system so you can fight off your illness.

Take care and feel better soon!

Flu Season Map

Emergency Preparation - The Check List

Emergencies and natural disasters can and often occur with no advance notice. It is important that you set aside time NOW to plan how you and your family would react during and after an emergency. Right now we have the “Swine Flu” scare, hurricane season is right around the corner, tornado’s threaten and earthquakes threaten many of our states, and terrorism is one everyone’s mind.

Awareness and preparation are the key! Take some simple steps to prepare for and respond to potential emergencies by doing three key things:

  • Get an emergency supply kit
  • Make a family emergency plan
  • Be informed and educated about the different types of emergencies that could occur and their appropriate responses.
  • Today I would like to cover the emergency supply kit and what types of item(s) you need to ensure it is complete and useful if needed.

Your basic supply kit should include:

? Water, one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and  sanitation
? Food, at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food
? Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert and extra batteries for both
    ? Flashlight and extra batteries
    ? First aid kit
? Whistle to signal for help
? Dust mask, to help filter contaminated air and plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place
? Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation
? Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
? Can opener for food (if kit contains canned food)
    ? Local maps
    ? Prescription medications and glasses
    ? Infant formula and diapers
? Pet food and extra water for your pet
? Important family documents such as copies of insurance policies, identification and bank account records in a waterproof, portable container
? Cash or traveler’s checks and change
? Emergency reference material such as a first aid book or information from www.ready.gov
? Sleeping bag or warm blanket for each person. Consider additional bedding if you live in a cold-weather climate.
? Complete change of clothing including a long sleeved shirt, long pants and sturdy shoes. Consider additional clothing if you live in a cold-weather climate
? Household chlorine bleach and medicine dropper – When diluted nine parts water to one part bleach, bleach can be used as a disinfectant. Or in an emergency, you can use it to treat water by using 16 drops of regular household liquid bleach per gallon of water. Do not use scented, color safe or bleaches with added cleaners.
    ? Fire Extinguisher
? Matches in a waterproof container
? Feminine supplies and personal hygiene items
? Mess kits, paper cups, plates and plastic utensils, paper towels
    ? Paper and pencils
? Books, games, puzzles or other activities for children

Start today building at least one kit per household. In the next few days we will post information regarding constructing a family emergency plan.
    Resouces provided by www.ready.gov

Webcast Training: Protecting Employees in H1N1 Flu Pandemic

Ensuring continuity - even survival - of your small business in the event the H1N1 flu pandemic spirals “out of control” is not a matter to be taken lightly. The items to be addressed total up to a daunting list. Ignoring the problem is no longer a viable option. But there is a new, viable and FREE option for getting businesses educated and prepared.

A new training webcast for business leaders: “Planning and Response to the H1N1 Flu Pandemic” is a great place to start. This hourlong webcast, produced along the lines of a “20/20 newscast,” explains in simple language what business leaders need to know now.

This valuable instructional webcast is comprised of segments, or “chapters”, that address:
1. How to protect employees from contamination.
2. How to secure your inputs to production - materials, supplier services, funding - when those entities are experiencing business disruption.
3. How to cross-train employees for continued functioning of key positions
4. How to establish satellite stocks of equipment and supplies accessible to healthy employees to keep them functioning away from an “unhealthy” headquarters.
5. How to establish, communicate and enforce sensible “sick policies.”

“Flu Pandemic: Crisis and Response” has been in production for over a year - well before H1N1 had ever been heard of. It is a joint production of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the All Hazards Training Center of the University of Findlay (Ohio). It was shown live on June 11, 2009 - the very day the World Health Organization declared H1N1 a worldwide pandemic - and now is available as a free on-demand training webcast. Accompanying the video instruction is a set of downloadable useful documents, including a planning template you can use to develop a response plan for your own business. You can stop/start/replay any portion of the webcast and even submit questions for the experts at the University, who will answer you via e-mail.

This webcast training tool is available 24/7 and it’s free, so “tune in” soon and get your team focused on an H1N1 flu response plan that will help ensure the ongoing continuity of your business.

Allergy Flu Shot

Knowing the Differences Between Flu-Like Symptoms and Allergies

If you’re in bed all day with flu-like symptoms, allergies could be the actual root cause. Often, people mistake simple allergy signs for more severe conditions like a cold or the flu.

To learn more about allergies and differentiating between an illness and a possible allergic reaction, keep reading.

All Allergies Aren’t Created Equal

Just because someone is having an allergic reaction doesn’t mean they’ll automatically exhibit a runny nose and itchy eyes. In fact, many allergies are symptomatic as stomach pains, aches, a rash or other flu-like indicators. Allergies are simply a range of reactions to different antigens, and those reactions can vary depending on the individual and the allergy itself.

Some allergic reactions are disguised as a low-grade fever, aches, pains and chills - all signs associated with the flu.

Understanding the Difference

Typically, a flu won’t be either too short or long in duration. If your aches, pains and flu-like symptoms seem to continue for several weeks or over the course of an allergen “season,” it’s a likely indicator that you’re reacting to a particular pollen or airborne particle. When flu symptoms continue indefinitely without relenting, you may have a bigger problem - like mold in your living environment.

If you suspect that mold or asbestos may be causing your chronic flu-like signs, you should consult with your doctor and look into having your home thoroughly inspected.

Be Aware of the Seasons

When it’s mid-February and you live in North Dakota, you’re not likely to be suffering from allergies, unless you’re experiencing a reaction to animals or other allergens. Typically though, pollen allergy season occurs during the warm months.

However, not all allergic reactions are caused by pollen. As mentioned earlier, some may be caused by mold in the living or working environment, some may be a result of airborne particles and pollution and others may even be caused by diet.

Get a Diagnosis

Talk to your doctor, particularly if your flu-like symptoms persist for a lengthy period of time. You may be advised to see an allergist to be tested for various allergies. Your physician might also prescribe various flu or allergy treatments to test how effective they are.

Another professional you may want to speak to is a naturopath - this individual will test you for a variety of food and environment-based allergens. He or she can also help you improve your diet as a way of boosting your immune system and improving your ability to help you fight off viruses like the flu.

Get a Flu Shot

If you’re living with flu-like signs, allergies may be the root cause. But, you should still protect yourself against the flu. For future years, protect your body against the flu by arming it with an up-to-date flu vaccination.

A number of people avoid a flu shot over fears of either ineffectiveness or actually catching the flu from the vaccine. This, unfortunately, does happen in a small percentage of cases. However, all-in-all almost anyone will benefit.

How to Protect the Mentally Challenged From Bird Flu

A bird flu pandemic is going to be a great disruption and test of humanity, but even more so to people who are mentally challenged, whether mentally retarded (MR) or who have psychiatric mental/emotional disorders.

Of course, all the physical ways of protecting ourselves from bird flu by remaining as isolated as possible, not physically touching people unless necessary, wearing Nanomasks and so on, apply to the mentally challenged as well as to everybody else.

Their extra risk comes from the impaired ability to adjust to a world where the bird flu virus is killing millions around the world, and the many consequences of that.

They may not understand that they should not go out, should not visit with friends, should not attend any adult day care, cannot go to work at their sheltered workshop and so on. Or that food can no longer be cooked but must come out of a can. Or that the lights may not work again for months. Or that the grocery store where they work is closed or that their job coach died from the flu. Or that batteries should be saved to operate the portable radio rather than a video game.

They may require patience and retraining in learning how to use a manual can opener, wash their bodies from a bucket or to keep a Nanomask snugly on their face at all time when out in public.

Schizoprenics may easily over-react to a bird flu pandemic. Imagine it’s the end of the world, incorporate it into their own mental fantasies etc.

Paranoids may make the best adjustment to the realities of a bird flu pandemic. Although the bird flu virus is not out to get them personally, it is out to get all of us. During a bird flu pandemic, avoidance techniques are practical.

Depressed people will require close observation, since a bird flu pandemic will only encourage this emotion. Many people around the world will be feeling event-linked depression over the state of the world and grief for deceased friends and family.

Everybody will be feeling stressed out, so people who’re already having problems coping emotionally will be all the more likely to look for a way out through suicide. Those who make the threat or attempt in an effort to get further help may not fully understand that a fully equiped ambulance and trained Emergency Medical Technicians are not a quick phone call to 911 away.

In their emotional state they may not understand that the local hospital and medical personnel are already too overloaded with bird flu patients. The extra help they need and want may simply not be there.

That leaves you to give them the emotional attention the need.

One major challenge during a serious and protracted pandemic will be obtaining prescription drugs. Check with their doctor about stockpiling an extra month or two of their medicine, in the event of a pandemic or other emergency.

You should also check with their doctor about care through the pandemic. Do they plan to stay available? They’re first trained as regular physicians, so it is possible they would be pressed into service at a local hospital tending flu patients? Do they have any back up?

Check with their medical provider, but I suggest giving them some useful task that is not critical but which is important enough for them to understand they are contributing to the household during a situation that is difficult for everybody. Make it their job to put the tubs outside at night to catch any rainfall, or to help with the cooking, or to keep the dog chained in the backyard.

As much as possible, keep their minds on accomplishing the small but useful day to day tasks that survival depends on.

The Avian Flu Pandemic

March 22nd, 2009

the avian flu pandemic

Which pandemic alert phase did the avian flu get to?

So the Swine flu has reached phase 5. How high did the bird flu go?

I’m not exactly sure, but from what i’ve read, it only got to level 3. To get to level 4 there has to be a significant number of confirmed human to human transmission cases. And although there were a lot of cases of bird flu, not enough of them were shown to have been passed by humans so it remained at level 3. To become a pandemic level 5, there only has to be one case of human to human contact in 2 different countries. Phase 6 means there is a community level outbreak of human transmission.
