Avian Flu Is A Potential Pandemic

Will the avian flu cause a disaster similar to the Spanish flu of 1918 that killed more than fifty million people in the world?

Avian flu or avian influenza is spreading at an alarming rate and it is believed that if it continues its flight, it has the potential to cause another major pandemic around the world. This time, it is estimated that up to one hundred and fifty million people may die.

Avian flu is a disease caused by a specific type of avian or bird influenza virus. Scientists have discovered that there are fifteen types of avian flu viruses that affect the bird populace. The current outbreak of avian flu is caused by the H5N1 virus.

Although the avian flu virus is supposed to be typically affecting the birds, the nature of this flu virus is that it can mutate and transfer from one species to another. The avian flu virus that has been killing birds previously is now affecting human beings too. Those people who have been affected contacted the disease because they were unhygienic in handling infected poultry.

The H5N1 virus has been found to be highly contagious and it can be transmitted to human beings through the contact of excretal or nasal secretions from infected birds. In addition, if the avian flu mutates and joins with a human flu virus, it will be transmitted easily from one person to another. If not detected and treated early, it can become fatal. The deadly avian flu virus is highly infectious and if it spreads rapidly, it will cause rapid fatalities to the human species.

This virus was first discovered in Hong Kong in 1997. It was spread by infected migratory birds such as wild ducks, swallows and wild geese to domesticated fowls like chicken, ducks, geese, turkeys and eventually affecting human beings too. A number of countries have confirmed human deaths due to avian flu and the figures have been constantly on the rise. Apparently, the avian flu virus has infected several hundred people and killing at least one hundred and fifty of them. It has also spread to a number of other countries such as Cambodia, mainland China, Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam.

The lethal H5N1 virus has caused the death or culling of an estimated two hundred million birds over a widespread of countries such as Cambodia, China (including Hong Kong), Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Thailand, Malaysia, Mongolia, Romania, Russia, Turkey and Vietnam.

When infected with the pathogenic H5N1 virus, the birds may develop severe sicknesses such as respiratory diseases and they usually die within the same day. Other telltale symptoms are loss of appetite, diarrhea, nervousness and depression as well as a reduction in egg production and ruffled feathers.

As prevention is the best cure, the precautionary measures initiated by the various affected countries helps in curbing aggravation.

At poultry farms, once a bird is infected, it must be culled immediately and the others properly vaccinated. While the owners are to routinely send randomly selected birds to the nearest avian lab for thorough check-ups, all of their workers must be properly covered when handling the fowls so as to avoid any direct contacts with infected birds.

It is believed that the avian flu virus cannot survive in temperatures above 100C. As such, all poultry products must be cooked thoroughly and properly. In addition, it is important to wash one’s hands with soap and hot water before food preparation and meals or after coming in contact with raw poultry products.

Although two drugs, Tamiflu (oseltamivir) and Relenza (zanamivir) are found to be effective against the deadly avian flu virus if taken within forty-eight of occurrence of first symptoms, no preventive drugs has yet been discovered against the H5N1 virus.

Avian flu infection in human beings portrays common flu symptoms such as cough, fever, headache, sore throat and muscle aches or pains. These may then progress to life threatening complications such as severe chest pains, breathing difficulties, respiratory failure and viral pneumonia. However, at times, the only symptom that an affected person has is an eye infection such as conjunctivitis, which can be mistaken to be ordinary sore eyes. As such, there may be misconceptions on whether the person has ordinary flu or the life-threatening avian flu.

The avian flu is certainly a potential pandemic threat to humanity and has to be addressed globally. As prevention has always been the best cure, the temporary solution is to maintain a healthy and hygienic lifestyle all the time.

Where To Find Flu Shots

where to find flu shots

Should kids be allow to go back to school after the swine flu nasal spray?

My daughter had her swine nasal spray few weeks ago. And today I was reminding the teacher not to give her swine flu shot at school. And one of the teacher ask me a question. Did the doctor tell my daughter not to come to school after the nasal spray? So I was wondering are the kids allow to go back to school after the swine flu nasal spray since the nasal spray is a live virus being spray into the nose.

Note: The teacher wasn’t complaining she was just curious. And so am I now. I tried to search in on-line about it but no where can be found. Maybe someone here may have some point of view. And my daughter was fine after the spray.

Note: Now my daughter’s doctor had called me just now letting me know that once the kids taken the nasal spray and the kids has no fever or illness within the same day of the spray they are allow to go back to school as normal.

I was worried about this too. I asked a lot of different Nurses and Docs. They all said it was okay to be around people after the nasal vaccine except people that have any of the conditions below;

For at least 21 days after receiving nasal influenza virus vaccine, avoid close contact with anyone who has a weak immune system caused by disease (such as cancer, HIV, or AIDS), or by certain medicines such as steroids, cancer chemotherapy, or radiation treatment. A person with a weak immune system can become ill if they have close contact with you after you have recently received a an influenza vaccine.

My whole family got the nasal vaccine last Friday. No problems. I got the shot. I did feel a bit of tummy ache later. Don’t know if this is connected or not. Good Question to ask though…

Avian Flu United States

September 24th, 2009

avian flu united states

Is there any chance of the Avian Flu getting to us in United States?

It is moving from country to country via waterfowl migration. It is likely to arrive in the US during the next migration back in the spring of 2007. People who raise poultry have been working on plans to keep their flocks inside poultry houses to avoid contact with wild birds.
Should bird flu be detected in the bird population, the public will be advised of sanitary procedures, such as not handling dead birds and wiping shoes before entering a home.

Contagious Flu Virus

July 28th, 2009

contagious flu virus

Why the Risk of a Bird Flu Pandemic Increases as the Virus Spreads

The bird flu virus can be compared to a monkey with a typewriter. And that’s why it’s getting more and more dangerous.

You may have heard the old observation that if you give enough monkeys a keyboard, eventually one will — just by random chance — type out the complete works of Shakespeare.

Of course, the odds against one monkey doing this are extremely high. The universe might implode before one monkey could do this.

But give a trillion monkeys a keyboard and maybe one will do it in a few million years. Give as many trillion monkeys as it takes to stretch from here to the next galaxy a keyboard, and chances are one out of those gazillions of monkey will actually type out the complete works of Shakespeare.

I’m comparing monkeys to the bird flu virus or A/H5N1.

The bird flu virus doesn’t have to do anything comparable to a monkey typing out Shakespeare. It just has to mutate or recombine genetic material to become high contagious to people. That’s the start of a pandemic.

For viruses, that’s a lot easier to do than for a monkey to type out the complete works of Shakespeare. There’re many strains of influenza viruses in the world which are highly contagious to people. Most of us have suffered from the flu, caught from a child or coworker, so we know that.

The more A/H5N1 viruses there are this world, the higher the probability that one of them will become highly contagious, human to human, just as ordinary flu is now.

Just as with monkeys — the more viruses, the faster one of them becomes highly contagious.

Yes, A/H5N1 “hid out” in chickens in China and wild ducks from the December 1997 massacre of chickens in Hong Kong until bird flu started killing chickens in South Korea.

It spread through most countries of Southeast Asia without becoming a pandemic. It’s spread into Europe and Africa without becoming a pandemic — so far.

The more people or animals bird flu infects, the more H5N1 viruses there are. Replicating, mutating and recombining with ordinary flu viruses.

Whether it’s chickens in Thailand, cats in Germany or little girls in Turkey . . . the more viruses, the greater the probability it will become highly contagious.

And because it’s now so widespread, there’s little chance that it will be contained soon. Scientists expect it to land in the New World by autumn.

It’s out of control and spreading fast.

How long before one out of those many countless trillions of viruses becomes highly contagious?

Swine Flu Public Health Emergency

July 9th, 2009

swine flu public health emergency

What does a public health emergency level 5 means?

What happens when public health reaches level 5? One of my friends said that all schools are off, but it seems that we have already reached level five, due to the swine flu, but is still in school … So what happens at this level and can anyone explain what happens at different levels?

No, just means that the World Health Org believes that a pandemic is imminent. This happens when it has spread from person to person in two or more countries. The review 2009 phase descriptions, WHO has maintained the use of a six-stage approach to facilitate the incorporation of new recommendations and approaches in the preparation existing national response plans. The structure and description of the phases of a pandemic have been revised to make them easier to understand, more accurate, and based upon observable phenomena. Phases 1-3 correspond to the preparation, including capacity building and planning of response, while 4-6 stages clearly indicate the need for response and mitigation. Moreover, the periods after the first pandemic wave are developed to facilitate the activities recovery of a pandemic.
