Conjunctivitis is the inflammation of the conjunctiva (the membrane that lines the eyelids and covers the exposed surface of the eyeball).
Conjunctivitis can be caused by allergies, bacteria, viruses, chemicals, or underlying health conditions.
Conjunctivitis, commonly known as pink eye, is an infection of the conjunctiva (the outer-most layer of the eye that covers the sclera). It is a fairly common condition and usually causes no danger to the eye or your child’s vision. Often called “pink eye,” it is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, the tissue that lines the inside of the eyelid. Inflammation causes small blood vessels in the conjunctiva to become more prominent, resulting in a pink or red cast to the whites of your eyes.
Acute conjunctivitis is redness and soreness (inflammation) of the clear covering (the conjunctiva) which coats the white of the eye and lines the inside of the eye lids. Conjunctivitis can be caused by a virus, bacteria, irritating substances (shampoos, dirt, smoke, and especially pool chlorine), allergens (substances that cause allergies) or transmitted diseases (STDs). Pink eye caused by bacteria, viruses, and STDs can spread easily from person to person, but is not a serious health risk if diagnosed promptly.
Causes
One cause involves the introduction of either bacterial or viral microorganisms into the eye. These may be transmitted to the eye by contaminated hands, washcloths or towels, cosmetics (particularly eye makeup), false eyelashes or extended wear contacts.
Minor conjunctivitis can accompany a viral cold or flu. Although bacterial and some of the viral infections (particularly herpes) are not very common, they are potentially serious. Both types of infection are contagious.
Symptoms
Symptoms of conjunctivitis can range from mild to serious. The symptoms are due to release of histamine and other active substances by mast cells , which stimulate dilation of blood vessels. In acute bacterial conjunctivitis, the infection usually lasts only 2 weeks. The patient typically complains of burning and the sensation of a foreign body in his eye.
The common symptoms include the eyes turning red, irritation and pain. Depending on the causes the symptoms differ slightly.
Pink eyes due to bacterial and virus infections will lead to red eyes that are watery and often discharge of fluid occurs. This starts in one of the eyes and spread to the other and both the eyes will be affected very soon. Infectious pink eyes are highly contagious.
Treatment of Conjunctivitis
1.Conjunctivitis sometimes requires medical attention. Cool compresses and artificial tears sometimes relieve discomfort in mild cases.
2.In more severe cases, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications and antihistamines may be prescribed. Some patients with persistent allergic conjunctivitis may also require topical steroid drops.
3.Bacterial conjunctivitis is usually treated with antibiotic eye drops or ointments that cover a broad range of bacteria (chloramphenicol or fusidic acid used ).
Antibiotic medication, usually eye drops, is effective for bacterial conjunctivitis. Viral conjunctivitis will disappear on its own. Many doctors give a mild antibiotic eyedrop for pink eye to prevent bacterial conjunctivitis.
A decoction prepared with a handful of dried coriander in 60 ml of water is an excellent eye-wash in conjunctivitis. It is said to relieve burning and reduces pain and swelling. This decoction should, however, be sparingly used by persons suffering from bronchial asthma and chronic bronchitis.
Series of trials Homeopathy With Flu Oscillococcinum
In this article we will examine a series of tests with Oscillococcinum flu products Boiron homeopathic.
Oscillococcinum is a homeopathic remedy Anas Barbariae 200C. This remedy is basically a combination of wild duck heart and duck liver. It is diluted in a session of 200 times. The remedy is so dilute that happens the number of Avagard. Critics say there is no substance to this remedy because of the high level of dilution. Oscillococcinum resources only need a duck to produce enough this homeopathic remedy to supply the world. This remedy is very popular which can be found in 52 countries around the world.
Oscillococcinum is marketed as a product that can prevent flu if taken regularly. The drug is also said that once you get the flu, taking this remedy may shorten the time you have influenza. Several tests were conducted to examine these theories.
The first tests were conducted by Vickers and Smith. They examined whether Oscillococcinum can prevent flu and shorten the duration of influenza compared with placebo. Theses tests were a total of three trials preventions 2265 people and 4 treatment trials of 1194 people. Only 2 of these 7 trials had good enough data to complete the trial. There is no evidence that Oscillococcinum can prevent influenza testing. The second trial with 700 participants we showed that Oscillococcinum may shorten the duration of flu by about 0.28 days. This equates to about 7 hours.
Vickers flu trials are the largest trials of homeopathy to date. Some other trials also came to similar conclusions with this homeopathic remedy. These other trials also examined factors such as chills, fever, stiff and runny nose.
Two trials tested by the researcher Cassonova Oscillococcinum the onset of flu-like symptoms. The first trial among 100 patients tested this remedy within 48 hours of contracting the flu. The homeopathic medicine group showed a reduction of chills, stiffness, fever and reported a more successful outcome. The homeopathy group showed no improvement in nasal secretion compared with the placebo group.
In the second trial with 300 patients Cassonova, Oscillococcinum was tested at the beginning of the great variety of flu-like symptoms of 48 hours no waiting time. In two days, fever was lower for the homeopathy group compared with the placebo group. On the fourth day of treatment, the group Oscillococcinum reported fewer chills and less aches and pains then the placebo group.
Researcher Ferley with 478 patients studied within 24 Oscillococcinum hours of flu-like symptoms. The results of this test was 48 hours, 66% greater chance of total recovery group compared homeopathy with the placebo group. The homeopathy group also had a more favorable view of medicine compared to placebo.
The final study research to be discussed in this article is by researcher Papp with 372 patients. This is a follow-up to the previous study. This study examined more or less the same criteria as the study Ferly. Twenty-four hours of getting the flu, the homeopathy group showed a shorter duration of flu symptoms less severe and compared with the placebo group with in 48 hours.
In conclusion, Oscillococcinum does not show evidence that it can prevent people from catching the flu. Studies have shown Oscillococcinum seems to shorten the duration of the flu. Most of these studies researchers say that more research with larger groups are needed to confirm that homeopathy remedy shortens the duration of the flu. However, many of these trials have a relatively large number of partcipants and researchers been observed.

Have you ever wondered why the cold is known as the ‘common’ cold? It is because at any given point, one in sixty people will be suffering from the cold, hence the term common.
Cold is caused by ‘rhinovirus’ (’rhin’ in Greek means nose). These virus are present in the air that we breathe and the things that we touch. There are nearly 200 different strains of virus that can infiltrate the lining of the nose and throat causing an immune system reaction that brings with it the symptoms of cold and sore throat.
Despite what some people may tell you, a common cold has no cure. Only remedies are available that can help you feel better. The cold will be cured by itself in about a week’s time. Some cold remedies are very ancient while others are relatively new.
Cure for the Common Cold
Here are some of the remedies that actually seem to work:
Chicken Soup: Chicken soup has helped alleviate the discomfort caused by cold for centuries. Research has shown that the chicken soup helps by working in two ways. Firstly, it behaves as an anti-inflammatory and inhibits the movement of neutrophils which are the immune system cells and participate in the body’s inflammatory response. Secondly, it helps by temporarily speeding the movement of the mucus through the nose thereby relieving congestion and reducing the time that the virus is in contact with the lining of the nose. And the good news is that research has also shown that canned chicken soup works just as well as homemade soup. And if you are a vegetarian, you could replace the chicken with some vegetables like carrot and peas and that should do the trick for you.
Water and Fluids: Water will not help flush the cold from the system. However, fluids like water, juice, warm broth and lemon water with honey will help loosen congestion and prevent dehydration. However, liquids like alcohol and coffee should be avoided as they further dehydrate the body.
Saline Water: In an 8 ounce of glass, dissolve about half a teaspoon of salt and gargle with the solution every four hours. This will provide definite relief to a sore and scratchy throat.
Hot Shower: A quick hot shower will help reduce congestion and provide temporary relief. The steam will help shrink the mucous membranes in the nose and throat which help with the drainage of mucus. But remember to keep the shower brief and do not soak yourself in the tub. Even if the water in the tub is hot initially, it will gradually become colder and can worsen the symptoms.
Humidity: The reason as to why cold is very common in the winters is because the cold virus thrives in dry conditions. The dry air can also make the mucus membrane of the nose dry causing a stuffy nose and a scratchy throat. Adding a humidifier in your house will help by adding moisture to the house. But remember that the humidifier brings with it mold, fungi and bacteria which can cause other complications. Hence it is imperative to keep your humidifier clean and change the water regularly.
Vitamin C: It is believed that vitamin C acts as a natural decongestant and can also reduce the duration of the cold. However, this belief has not been clinically proven. The ideal dosage of vitamin C is a capsule of 500 mg. Anything greater than this will not be absorbed by the body.
Sleep: Your body needs adequate rest and sleep to fight infection. Take ample rest and cozy up in bed with warm blankets.
Over the Counter Medications: Non-prescription decongestions and pain relief are available that do offer relief from various symptoms but do remember that that these drugs will neither cure cold nor shorten its duration. Research has also shown that if taken for an extended period of time, these drugs can make the symptoms worse and can also cause damage to the liver. I believe that you should consider taking these drugs only if no other option is available.
There are many wives tales that make tall claims about curing cold but they usually do not help. Ask around and find out if the tale actually has helped anyone before blindly accepting any suggestion. It can do more harm than good.

Yes!! Homeopathic doctors are wonderful. The one I am seeing will use a natural remedy for minor issues but will also use traditional medicine when he knows that is the best way to go. Most traditional docs don’t entertain the homeopathic ideas…if that is something you are passionate about I would encourage you to find a doc that uses both. That way you have more options.

Type A of influenza virus has many different subtypes due to changes in some proteins situated on the surface of the A virus. These changeable proteins are Hemagglutinin (HA) and Neuraminidase (NA).
