Avian Flu Is A Potential Pandemic

Will the avian flu cause a disaster similar to the Spanish flu of 1918 that killed more than fifty million people in the world?

Avian flu or avian influenza is spreading at an alarming rate and it is believed that if it continues its flight, it has the potential to cause another major pandemic around the world. This time, it is estimated that up to one hundred and fifty million people may die.

Avian flu is a disease caused by a specific type of avian or bird influenza virus. Scientists have discovered that there are fifteen types of avian flu viruses that affect the bird populace. The current outbreak of avian flu is caused by the H5N1 virus.

Although the avian flu virus is supposed to be typically affecting the birds, the nature of this flu virus is that it can mutate and transfer from one species to another. The avian flu virus that has been killing birds previously is now affecting human beings too. Those people who have been affected contacted the disease because they were unhygienic in handling infected poultry.

The H5N1 virus has been found to be highly contagious and it can be transmitted to human beings through the contact of excretal or nasal secretions from infected birds. In addition, if the avian flu mutates and joins with a human flu virus, it will be transmitted easily from one person to another. If not detected and treated early, it can become fatal. The deadly avian flu virus is highly infectious and if it spreads rapidly, it will cause rapid fatalities to the human species.

This virus was first discovered in Hong Kong in 1997. It was spread by infected migratory birds such as wild ducks, swallows and wild geese to domesticated fowls like chicken, ducks, geese, turkeys and eventually affecting human beings too. A number of countries have confirmed human deaths due to avian flu and the figures have been constantly on the rise. Apparently, the avian flu virus has infected several hundred people and killing at least one hundred and fifty of them. It has also spread to a number of other countries such as Cambodia, mainland China, Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam.

The lethal H5N1 virus has caused the death or culling of an estimated two hundred million birds over a widespread of countries such as Cambodia, China (including Hong Kong), Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Thailand, Malaysia, Mongolia, Romania, Russia, Turkey and Vietnam.

When infected with the pathogenic H5N1 virus, the birds may develop severe sicknesses such as respiratory diseases and they usually die within the same day. Other telltale symptoms are loss of appetite, diarrhea, nervousness and depression as well as a reduction in egg production and ruffled feathers.

As prevention is the best cure, the precautionary measures initiated by the various affected countries helps in curbing aggravation.

At poultry farms, once a bird is infected, it must be culled immediately and the others properly vaccinated. While the owners are to routinely send randomly selected birds to the nearest avian lab for thorough check-ups, all of their workers must be properly covered when handling the fowls so as to avoid any direct contacts with infected birds.

It is believed that the avian flu virus cannot survive in temperatures above 100C. As such, all poultry products must be cooked thoroughly and properly. In addition, it is important to wash one’s hands with soap and hot water before food preparation and meals or after coming in contact with raw poultry products.

Although two drugs, Tamiflu (oseltamivir) and Relenza (zanamivir) are found to be effective against the deadly avian flu virus if taken within forty-eight of occurrence of first symptoms, no preventive drugs has yet been discovered against the H5N1 virus.

Avian flu infection in human beings portrays common flu symptoms such as cough, fever, headache, sore throat and muscle aches or pains. These may then progress to life threatening complications such as severe chest pains, breathing difficulties, respiratory failure and viral pneumonia. However, at times, the only symptom that an affected person has is an eye infection such as conjunctivitis, which can be mistaken to be ordinary sore eyes. As such, there may be misconceptions on whether the person has ordinary flu or the life-threatening avian flu.

The avian flu is certainly a potential pandemic threat to humanity and has to be addressed globally. As prevention has always been the best cure, the temporary solution is to maintain a healthy and hygienic lifestyle all the time.

“How can it be proven in one paragraph that Genesis was written by ignorant men and not by any god?…?

…Because man is given “dominion” over all beasts, fowl, and fish. But no dinosaurs or plesiosaurs or pteradactyls are specified, because the author’s did not know of their existence. Nor are any marsupials mentioned, because Australia was not known on any map. Most important, in Genesis man is not awarded dominion over germs and bacteria because the existance of these necessary yet dangerous fellow creatures was not known or understood. And if it had been known or understood, it would at once have become apparant that these forms of life had dominion over us, and would continue to enjoy it uncontested until the priests had been elbowed aside and medical research at last given the oppurtunity. Even today, the balance between man and microbe is by no means decided, but DNA has enabled us to sequence the genome of our lethal rivals, like the avian flu virus, and to elucidate what we have in common.” by Christopher Hitchens

what do you guys think?

What do I think? Too shallow.

Some people claim all faith is blind, but my faith is a carefully considered, carefully reasoned and very reasonable, rational and defensible faith. Were atheist Stephen Roberts (1901-1971) standing in front of me this moment, I would say back to him, “I contend that we are both men of faith. I just have faith in one more thing than you do, and for very good reason. When you fully understand why I disdain all the devisers of superstitions and dismiss the gods of vain imaginings, you will understand why I believe in my God, and you will believe also.” — B. The Avian Flu Pandemic

March 22nd, 2009

the avian flu pandemic

Which pandemic alert phase did the avian flu get to?

So the Swine flu has reached phase 5. How high did the bird flu go?

I’m not exactly sure, but from what i’ve read, it only got to level 3. To get to level 4 there has to be a significant number of confirmed human to human transmission cases. And although there were a lot of cases of bird flu, not enough of them were shown to have been passed by humans so it remained at level 3. To become a pandemic level 5, there only has to be one case of human to human contact in 2 different countries. Phase 6 means there is a community level outbreak of human transmission.

Bird Flu Virus Facts

January 24th, 2009

bird flu virus facts

Why is there a news blackout on bird flu?

This is a serious problem that the world will face even within the next few weeks. It has affected several countries in the world with millions of birds was left. In fact, the H5N1 virus only two mutations away from being human to human. Although this is not going H to H, the economic impact could be devastating. Chickin key words are a source of protein, especially in developing countries. Imagine the problem of insects and rodents, not birds!

Yes, it is a big problem now for birds and anything that depend on them in the ecosystem. And if the virus manages to move between human and human, and retains its lethality in humans, will be an even bigger problem for us. As for the media blackout they say, should be looking at the media do not. The I am media has treated this with much sense is always good as anything technical and speculative. Now it is true that this is not as high quality coverage as I would like, but then the general media does not cover anything to the standard technique. Much to my regret and frustration. In short, I think you're upset by the behavior usual media. Part of it is almost always absurd and worthless, some of it is something reliable, some specialized media do a job quite good (for example, New Scientist or Scientific American, or …), some of them is fit only for wrapping (metaphorical these days Internet) of fish. I can not see the change of the incorrect implementation usual. ========= Conspiracy Involving accounting conspiracy to the blackout by I think that is possible, but unlikely. This story is now several years, has involved a large number poultry for putting them in various places around the world, and has been outside the control of any government alone for a long time. So I disagree that there was a blackout, therefore disagree that there has been a conspiracy. Maybe in reality there is one - a one ineffective in my opinion, but it is impossible to establish a negative proposition as a matter of logic. Therefore, it can be … but I think that is unlikely.

Bird Flu Pandemic

bird flu pandemic

The Result Of A Bird Flu Pandemic

It is important to understand the result of a bird flu pandemic so that if the time comes, people will be enlightened to the knowledge of its overall effects. Also a country will be able to recover faster and the affect on the economy will not be as severe.

So What Would The Result Be If A Bird Flu Pandemic Did Happen To Occur?

Well firstly the worst impact would be a catastrophic loss of life. If the disease was not controlled immediately, the death count could grow into the thousands. Another possibility is that the spread could become uncontrollable, meaning that it will have become too widespread to be stopped. Although this is an unlikely event, it is still a possibility and people should make measures to reduce the likelihood of this occurring. In fact it has occurred to an extent in the past. In 1918 pandemic struck that caused the death of over 50 million people worldwide. It is important to note however that in that day and age, medicine was nowhere near as sophisticated as it is today.

Another impact, although less important, is the need to destroy poultry. Previous bird flu pandemics have seen the destruction of millions of poultry and the bankrupsy of a great number of poultry distributors. The first order that a government gives is to destroy most if not all poultry in the country so that they can quickly start to control the pandemic. This can have a severe impact on a nations economy.

How Should We Prepare For A Bird Flu Pandemic?

The best way to prepare for a pandemic is to do some research and learn about its affects(which is what you are doing now!) Secondly you need to write down a plan and response strategy so that when the time comes, you have a system that will prepare you for such an event. This will include things such as going down and picking up the kids from school and bringing them home. Also you will want to take note of what poultry products you have eaten in the last week. It is unlikely that bird flu will affect every chicken distributor in the country, but it’s better to be on the safe side.

Probably the most important rule that everyone should take note of is to not panic when a bird flu pandemic strikes. Panic only causes confusion, which then leads to chaos, which then leads to a catastrophe. If you have a plan with a series of steps that must be followed in the event of a pandemic then you have nothing to worry about.

H5n1 Flu Symptoms

h5n1 flu symptoms

Influenza A (H1N1) now crosses from humans to pigs so what’s next?

It now appears that Influenza A (H1N1) can now be passed from humans to pigs - as apparently has happened in Canada. There are a few reports around that point to Bird Flu (H5N1) infecting pig populations without causing the pigs to exhibit any obvious symptoms.

I’m wondering two things here: 1. Has influenza passed from Humans to Pigs easily in the past and 2. What are the chances of the new influenza A (H1N1) and bird flu (H5N1) combining in a pig and creating something new?

I think this virus is changing so quickly there are a lot of unanswered questions. We are yet to see the full impact.

H5n1 Flu Pandemic

h5n1 flu pandemic

Swine flu pandemic globally and H5N1 endemic in China?

I have seen a report from a leading scientist in China warning of a possible mutation of swine flu and bird flu re assorting themselves to make a “monstrous virus”. This is obviously a concern for health officials and with a explosion of bird flu cases in Egypt and Idonesia this could be more likely than ever.

What could be the effect of this if it was to happen?

http://uk.news.yahoo.com/22/20091125/tts-uk-flu-china-ca02f96.html
Please remember that H5N1 kills half of the people it infects…if H1N1 and H5N1 combine then it would have H1N1′S contagiousness and H5N1’s lethalness.

6.7 billion infected= 3 billion die.

that is 50% of the human population.

its a bio weapon…and an immune destroyer.

Do i have AvianbirdsFLU ? I have wild migratory birds, please help for God sakes, am i gonna die????

Hi, i live in middle-east at the moment. I have a red-breasted goose and a ruddy shellduck and a white-fronted goose as pets. I know, other folks get a dog or something but that’s me. I’m a sucker for wild waterfowl, that’s always been my problem. I bought them from a native hunter near some lake. Anyhoo, i love’em so much, i pet’em all the time, and i play with them everyday which btw carries the added bonus of carting away their monstrous crap! I read some article about the whole thing and i think i’m into some kinky sh’it! Is it serious? Am i gonna get avian flu? Or H5N1 virus? How in the hell is this possible? How the hell can i get infected by a goose? If i smell his crap? Should i go to a doctor? Or a hospital? Or should i get rid of my lovely birds, i can take’em to the veterinarian, may be they’re fine right? I’m so confuse folks, please help me, any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! God bless you all!

Bird flu symptoms in humans can include typical influenza-like symptoms, such as:
1. Fever

Asian Flu Pandemic In The Near Future

The last Asian flu pandemic occurred in 1957. It is estimated that between 1 million people and 4 million people were killed by the virus.

Fast forward to October 2004 when an American lab sent out stored samples of the deadly strain of Asian flu to different labs all over the world. By some kind of administrative error some 3,700 samples of the 1957 Asian flu virus were sent out to labs around the world. The US scrambled to fix this terrible error but because the labs had expected to receive a much more normal sample of flu virus for testing they did not treat the sample with the care that the strain they received deserved. It is unlikely that all the samples were retrieved.

How could this have happened?

The College of American Pathologists, from time to time, sends out different viruses to labs worldwide. They do this so that these labs can test to see how well their vaccines are coping with the expected influenza strains. In order to make the testing accurate, the labs are not told what strain of virus they are going to receive. Only the CAP knows what they are sending out to the testing labs. The College of American Pathologists thought that they were sending out a regular old Influenza A virus but instead they sent out one of the most deadly viruses in human history: the Asian flu.

If this Asian flu had escaped into the population the consequences would have been very serious. Nobody born since 1968 would have any mmunity to the virus, the effects would likely be at least as bad as they were in 1957 when people had had the chance to buld up some immunity from the virus’ ancestors.

The incident was caused by an administrative error although the details have yet to be made public. How could 3,700 samples of Asian flu be put out into the world by accident? Samples were sent to Asia, the Middle East, North and South America as well as Europe. It only took one lab worker to have an accident, or for a lab to dispose of the samples incorrectly and the genie would have been out of the bottle.

The most chilling aspect of the issue was that because of the lack of knowledge at the receiving labs, they did not take the care that they should have. Asian flu should be kept in extreme containment. Because the kits normally contain a relatively harmless strain of flu, they do not receive great security.

This incident tends to put the curent avian (bird) flu scare into perspective. H5N1 (avian) flu does not spread from human to human, only from birds to humans or other animals. As such, whilst it is sensible to be concerned about the bird flu issue, the real threat comes from the kind of man-made mistake of October 2004 when a deadly infectious disease was carelessly handled. This kind of error can happen at any time and would have devatating consequences. Bird flu is unlikely to ever make the jump across species and even now, vaccines are almost ready to protect humans against the H5N1 flu virus.
