What is Swine Flu - H1N1 Virus?

Swine flu, now known as influenza A H1N1, is a type of influenza virus. This is a new strain of influenza that has been only recently that affect people. It is not caught by the pigs or eat pork. It is a human influenza virus and spread by people. Believed to be a combination of three types of influenza - Swine Flu, avian flu and human flu. The new strain is extremely contagious and is spreading rapidly throughout the world.

H1N1 is different from other strains of influenza. This strain of influenza has not been previously exposed to humans before so there is no built immunities to it. This is what makes it so serious. At present there is no prevention drug that can be taken to avoid it. That’s why people who are elderly, very young or those with compromised immune systems should be extremely careful to avoid getting the flu.

Just how dangerous it is to be seen. We are starting to see the beginning of the cases in the United States. Believed to have originated in Mexico, but has spread worldwide. The worst of which seem to be in Mexico, probably because many people were unaware of the dangers of influenza and not seek medical treatment immediately.

Which was renamed the A H1N1 influenza to prevent people from making a connection to the pigs. This is similar in some respects to the flu that ravaged the world for decades. However, it is proving to be more serious. The outbreak was becoming serious because nobody has immunity to this strain of influenza. It is estimated that approximately 1 in 4 people who come into contact with swine flu contract with him.

The swine flu has similar symptoms to the normal seasonal flu bug. Swine influenza is characterized by high fever in the first and extreme fatigue with muscular pain. There is also a typical cold symptoms accompanying swine flu including coughing and a sore throat and nasal congestion. Some people also reported nausea or vomiting and diarrhea. The severity of symptoms is what leads most physicians to consider a Diagnosis of Swine Flu.

Anyone with symptoms should seek medical attention immediately. Those who receive immediate treatment is most likely going to make a full recovery. Doctors have a nose and throat swab sample to send to the lab for testing. The results will be returned within several days. Treatment is a drug called Tamiflu. The doctor will prescribe Tamiflu if needed. Most people in the swine flu in a few days. Once you have the swine flu of your body will have an immunity to this strain in the future.

Broken Compact Fluorescent Bulb Disposal

January 25th, 2004

CFL Light Bulbs In Texas - Not The Brightest Idea?

Mercury is poisonous, yet it’s a critical part of most compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs), the kind that environmentalists and some governments are pushing as a new way to cut energy consumption. Mercury is probably best known for its effects on the nervous system. It can also damage the kidneys and liver, and in sufficient quantities can cause death.

There were an estimated 150 million CFLs sold in the United States in 2006 and, and Wal-Mart alone hopes to sell 100 million in 2007. Some scientists and environmentalists are worried that most are ending up in garbage dumps. U.S. regulators, manufacturers and environmentalists note that, because CFLs require less electricity than traditional incandescent bulbs, they reduce overall mercury in the atmosphere by cutting emissions from coal-fired power plants.

But some of the mercury emitted from landfills - in the form of vaporous methyl-mercury - can get into the food chain more readily than inorganic elemental mercury released directly from a broken bulb or even coal-fired power plants, according to government scientist Steve Lindberg.

“Disposal of any mercury-contaminated material in landfills is absolutely alarming to me,” said Lindberg, emeritus fellow of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

The mercury content in the average CFL — now about 5 milligrams — would fit on the tip of a ballpoint pen, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and manufacturers have committed to cap the amount in most CFLs to 5 milligrams or 6 milligrams per bulb. To prevent mercury from getting into landfills, the EPA, CFL makers and various organizations advocate recycling. Besides commercial recyclers and some municipal waste collection services, some retailers accept used CFLs.

IKEA, the Swedish home furnishings chain, has free drop-off programs at all of its 234 stores, 29 of which are in the United States. Now advocacy groups are calling on Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and other big chains to get involved.

One problem with recycling is that it isn’t cheap. The value of the metal, glass and mercury reclaimed from recycling fails to offset the cost of the process. Costs can range from 20 cents to 50 cents per bulb - not a paltry sum when some CFLs sell for less than $2 at Wal-Mart.

But, compared with the overall lifecycle cost of buying and using a bulb, recycling would be less than 1 percent. Another obstacle lies in the fragility of the bulbs and their mercury content.

The U.S. government has no single recycling plan in mind. Among the alternatives are special curbside collections by municipalities, mail-back programs by manufacturers and drop-off programs at various places, including retail stores that sell CFLs, he said.

Some methods lend themselves to certain geographic areas more than others, because of differences in population density, transportation infrastructure and proximity to recycling sites.

State laws are also a factor. Federal regulations mandate recycling of fluorescent lighting, while exempting households and other small users. Some states, however, are strict. For example, California no longer allows anyone to throw CFLs in the trash, while Massachusetts requires manufacturers to implement recycling programs and meet certain targets.

As technology advances, however, mercury could become less of an issue, at least as far as light bulbs are concerned. Last month General Electric Co. said it was working on doubling the energy efficiency of incandescent lights and eventually developing versions comparable with CFLs. These bulbs, which the company hopes to begin marketing in 2010, will cost less than fluorescents but they won’t last as long.

Meanwhile, some environmentally minded consumers in Dallas, Houston and throughout Texas are embracing CFLs and doing their best to dispose of them responsibly.

Swine Flu Dangerous Or Not

August 10th, 2001

swine flu dangerous or not

Your baby and swine flu - take precautions now to prevent serious complications in the future

Your baby and swine flu - take precautions now to avoid dangerous complications later

People with certain diseases have a higher risk of complications or even death if they come down with the flu virus. Diseases that put you at higher risk include, frequent chest colds, asthma, COPD, emphysema and other lung conditions. Sometimes babies can have a very mild case of asthma although I've never had an asthma attack. In this situation, having a baby and swine flu can result in a very dangerous combination. If the child has any of the diseases listed above, you should call your doctor immediately and discuss the precautions you and your child should take in relation to the swine flu even before an outbreak in your area.

In the case of an outbreak of H1N1 and your baby has a lung disease such as asthma, your child may be at risk for complications or even dangerous death. It is well documented that people with asthma have a much higher chance of developing severe complications than others.

In fact, about 41% of people hospitalized in New York suffered from asthma. And in recent weeks, seven deaths related to H1N1 virus occurred in New York. Of these seven deaths, six individuals had asthma. If you're worried about your baby and swine flu with asthma, you should call your doctor and see if special precautions are recommended with regard to swine flu even before an outbreak occurs in your area.

H1N1 is a virus that causes influenza in humans. The virus has undergone a recent mutation in its current form. Due to this mutation, humans have no protection from the disease. This is why governments around the world are concerned about the possibility of a pandemic.

Like the seasonal influenza, severe illness and death has occurred as a result of diseases related to this serious disease. Worldwide, about 250,000 people die annually from flu-related complications.

If you're worried about your baby and swine influenza, the protection of your family or having one of the diseases mentioned above, some preparation before the swine influenza problem starts. Do what is necessary to protect yourself and your family from the swine flu. Once an outbreak occurs, it may be too late.

Is Fluoride Dangerous

December 27th, 1999

is fluoride dangerous

Fluoride water filters

How safe is fluoride for you? Why is it that it is still added to drinking water even though there are numerous studies proving that it is unnecessary and dangerous to our health?  Getting your water provider to change its policy on fluoride will probably take longer than is good for your health so you should instead buy a fluoride water filter. It will remove fluoride and other contaminants from your drinking water.

Fluoride causes dental fluorosis, a condition that causes the teeth to brown and pit. It occurs through constant fluoride ingestion. With dental health care costs increasing it makes more sense to buy a fluoride water filter.

More and more scientists are speaking against the adding of fluoride to drinking water due to the now accepted knowledge that it can be a carcinogen. Not all filters can remove fluoride, this is why it is important to buy a fluoride water filter that removes it as well as other contaminants. A convenient model is a countertop model that allows one to switch between tap water and filtered water for drinking.

Use an ion exchange  based filter to remove fluoride unlike simple distillation or chlorination purification methods. Always confirm that the water filter is equipped to remove fluoride before buying the model. Ensure that you protect your family from fluoride contamination as the results of constant exposure are pricey to treat. Better still start a campaign to have fluoride removed from your local municipality and then enjoy safe clean water.

Dangerous Flus

October 8th, 1991

dangerous flus

Individual Health Can Be Influenced By Your Lifestyle

Just fifty years ago, we weren’t faced with ten different flus of notorious proportions. There was just “the flu”. World travel has now made it possible for a dangerous flu from Hong Kong to be transported in a matter of hours to San Francisco. Today, there are conditions we’d never heard of until doctors decided it deserved a name and some bright chemist came up with a pill to get rid of the symptoms.

Does this new way of interpreting health strike a suspicious note in your mind? If so, that’s probably good. In today’s world, we need to take more responsibility for our individual health than might previously have been required. More and more people are beginning to realize that our individual health condition often belongs in our own hands.

There’s a lot of individual health factors that we can control in very simple and effective ways, to prevent conditions and diseases, avoiding a visit to the doctor and yet another costly prescription with side effects we may not even want to think about, but must, for our own protection.

In the last couple of decades, we’ve come to realize that our diets play a big role in individual health and disease. We know consumption of fatty and fried foods can cause the cholesterol to soar or harden our arteries. We’re aware of the many benefits of fresh fruits and vegetables, loaded with antioxidants and free radical scavengers, which can go along way towards staving off cancer, colds and digestive problems.

Cold water fish contain the now famous and beneficial omega-3 fatty acids, which are dubbed the “good” fats in nutrition circles. A couple of minutes thought on these few examples shows us we have a great deal of control over our individual health problems.

Then there are legitimate conditions we may have accumulated over the years, due to poor lifestyle habits, diet or simply genetically passed on as a vulnerability. Even then, we needn’t rely on a pill to save the day. Taking responsibility for our own individual health concerns means we must do a little work ourselves, many times producing a very favorable result.

Let’s say your cholesterol is high and your doctor gives you a prescription medicine to reduce the levels. However, after reading the literature accompanying that prescription, listing all the warnings about possible side effects, you’re not so sure you want to consume this pill.

You do a little research on cholesterol and find that many clinical studies demonstrate that daily garlic intake will reduce the cholesterol levels by an equal amount in the same time frame, with no scary side effects. That’s when you want to consult your doctor and talk this over. If you can get the same results from a food rather than a pill, why introduce a pill that may do you harm?

You’ll find that by educating yourself, you can take charge of many individual health concerns and be hale and hearty.
