Prospects Of China’s Water Treatment Industry

1, water treatment industry, introduced the

Water treatment in order to make the water meet specific environmental and recycling purposes, by physical, chemical and biological means, water quality control, remove or add water, simply put, water is meant to make the water meet specific environmental and recycling of use, through physical, chemical and biological means, water quality control, remove or add some water for the production, life and environment do not need or require material as a whole. The scope of water treatment into the production and supply of tap water, sewage treatment and recycling and other water treatment, use and distribution of three categories.

From the water treatment industry, the actual operation point of view, we can be divided into circulating water system management, integrated water resources management and water supply and other special treatment in three categories. Circulating water system management sector include central air-conditioning cooling circulating water treatment, refrigeration cycle of water treatment, heating water, central heating circulating water treatment, industrial cooling, chilled water circulating few segments of equipment production and sales. Integrated water resources management sector mainly include wastewater treatment, landscape and environmental water treatment, rainwater use, urban sewage and waste utilization, general production of sewage and waste utilization of several market segments. Water supply and other mainly by the water supply and other water treatment industries pose.

In 2008 the market scale of China’s water industry to reach 1,000 billion yuan, of which circulating water system management industry was 77.0 billion yuan, integrated water resources management industry as 45.34 billion yuan, and the rest totaled 46.96 billion yuan. This shows that China’s water market is huge, composition is a water circulation system of governance and integrated water resources management industry and water supply and half of each other.

Note: Due to the breakdown of water supply and other technical requirements for water treatment industry, a low, all kinds of technology is more mature, below the water treatment industry, the main object of study for the circulating water system of governance and integrated water resources management industry.

Second, the status quo of China’s water treatment industry, technology development

Water treatment industry is a multi-disciplinary, knowledge-intensive high-tech industries, involving biological, chemical, machinery, electronics and other fields is the country’s environmental protection industry development level an important symbol. Since the 20th century, 90 years in the country to vigorously promote sustainable development, the establishment of environment-friendly conservation community, background, domestic water treatment business through the introduction of foreign advanced technology and constant innovation in technology has made considerable progress in have been gradually reduced with the advanced water treatment technology gap.

1, circulating water system Development of Treatment Technology

Circulating water treatment technology in the final analysis is to answer the questions under the premise of controlling water quality indicators, how to protect the system is stable and reliable operation and reduce processing costs; how to effectively improve the concentration ratio, saving water resources and secondary pollution and so on. At present, the circulating water system of governance as the main technology is the physical methods and chemical methods.

1.1 Physical Water Treatment Technology Development

Physical water treatment technology, the development process has gone through the magnetic treatment, high-voltage electrostatic processing, high-frequency radio-frequency electromagnetic treatment and the four stages of processing. Currently based on magnetic processing and high-voltage electrostatic technology products dealing with restrictions on the use of the conditions have gradually lost their competitive edge, high-frequency electromagnetic radio frequency treatment and processing technology to become mainstream technology.

      1.2 Chemical Water Treatment Technology

Circulating water through the cycle of chemical water treatment technology dosing water stabilizer in the form of chemical products to solve the system scaling, corrosion and bacteria breeding algae problem. Due to easily lead to secondary pollution and control system to address such issues as the earlier restricted the chemical method to promote the use of water treatment technology.

1.3 circulating water system treatment technology trends

At present, the physical water treatment technology has been developed to a higher level of RF-type physical field water treatment technology, the technology at home and abroad a centralized air-conditioning and heating system of circulating water treatment areas to be widely used. In practical engineering applications, RF-style physical fields water treatment technology has been successfully applied to the Guangzhou University City district cooling and district heating projects, the majority of the Beijing Olympic Games venues, the National Grand Theater, as well as basic transportation infrastructure such as Beijing rail transportation, rail transportation in Tianjin , Nanjing rail transport projects.

Chemical cycle of water treatment technology, along with the large-scale fertilizer petroleum, chemical, metallurgical equipment to introduce and develop. Application of chemical treatment longer, technology is more mature. However, chemical treatment equipment, mainly through the regular or periodic dosing dosing the water to control the water quality in quantitative pharmaceutical scaling, corrosion and bacteria breeding ground for algae and other issues, because of its high operating cost (subject to the system of continuity dosing chemical treatment agents ), likely to cause secondary pollution of water, resulting in circulating water unstable and subject to certain restrictions on scope of application.

At present, surface water, groundwater and wastewater reuse and other dynamic replenishment water gradually applied to circulating water systems, dynamic and static quality of the replenishment cycle of water gave rise to conflicts between the requirements, therefore, in the physical law static treatment of recycled water on the basis of the main technical indicators, supplemented by dynamic chemical treatment solution replenishment dynamic changes of physico-chemical water treatment technology has solved the water quality fluctuations due to recharge of recycled water quality problems of instability, is the circulating water system technology, the future of the area of governance trends.

2, integrated water resources management technology development

The field of integrated water resources management has not yet formed a full-featured production process, a variety of technical methods are scattered sewage, landscape water, rainwater and other related water treatment.

      2.1 Wastewater Treatment Technology

China’s current wastewater treatment technologies include the application of more oxidation ditch process, SBR method, CASS process, contact oxidation method, Biological Aerated Filter Technology (BAF), MBR method and speed sub-biological treatment technologies. These methods have advantages and disadvantages, select the main method described as follows:

      A, CASS process

CASS (Cyclic Activated Sludge System) technology is internationally recognized in recent years, treatment of domestic sewage and wastewater is one of the advanced technology. The basic structure is: In the Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR), based on the reactor pool length along the direction of the design into two parts, the front area of biological selection, also known as pre-reaction zone, the rear main reaction zone, its main reaction zone can be installed in the rear of the automatic charge-off of water lifting devices. The entire process of aeration, sedimentation, drainage and other processes within the cycle in the same pond to run, eliminating the conventional activated sludge secondary sedimentation tank and sludge return system; the same time, continuous water, intermittent drainage.

      B, MBR Process

Membrane bioreactor (MBR) is a membrane separation unit and the bio-processing unit with a new water treatment technology, to get the rapid development in recent decades. The process replaces the application of hollow fiber membrane activated sludge in secondary sedimentation tank to carry out solid-liquid separation, effective separation of the mud to reach the objective. The role of high-performance membrane retention can be effectively retain nitrifying bacteria, so that it completely trapped in the bio-reactor, so that nitrification can be carried out smoothly, effectively remove ammonia nitrogen, to avoid the loss of sludge at the same time can be difficult to retain temporary degradation of macromolecular organic matter to extend their residence time in the reactor, so that to maximize the decomposition.

However, there are still MBR process is as follows shortcomings: high cost film, membrane modules and short service life, 2 to 3 years that is required to be replaced; easily lead to membrane fouling; high energy consumption, in order to increase the membrane flux, to reduce membrane fouling, we must increase the velocity, scouring membrane surface, resulting in MBR power consumption than conventional biological treatment processes high. .

      C,-speed sub-biological treatment

Speed sub-biological treatment technology is a new sewage treatment technology. The principle of this technique is the use of fluid dynamics in the “exile,” the principle of breaking the traditional biological treatment methods, so that the processing system into a single ever-changing biological environment biological environment in which the water body in a collection of repeated occurrence of anaerobic, oxygen reaction, and the process without sedimentation tanks, backwash and sludge treatment systems. Speed sub-biological treatment technology is the core of “sub-biochemical-speed ball”, as a biological carrier, filling the speed in the specially designed sub-biochemical pool, attached to the biofilm on which is the main role of the biological material handling systems. Sub-biochemical ball speed can be 30 years of normal use without having to replace, than the traditional bio-filler saving a lot of replacement and maintenance costs.

      2.2 Landscape Water Treatment Technology

At present, the physical landscape of water treatment technology is relatively simple consisting mainly of the processing technology, point-source processing in order to change the water-based cutting pollution, point source to handle air flotation filtration mainly endogenous to handle oxygen dredging for Lord. For the landscape and environmental management of water bodies commonly used methods are: 1) to filtering and oxygenation as the main characteristics of the physical methods; 2) to put in drug control as the main characteristics of micro-chemical methods; 3) to increase the contact area with air the main features of the biological treatment method, and 4) to on a regular basis the role of microorganisms inoculated with water as the main features of the ecological approach.

      2.3 Rainwater Treatment Technology

Rainwater rainwater that belong to micro-polluted water. Collection of links dealing with relatively simple technology, mainly to resolve the storage and water to maintain the problem, the part of the governance landscape water treatment technology and there is no essential difference.

2.4 Technology Development Trend of Integrated Water Resources Management

At present, a single processing technology can not meet the requirements of the field of integrated water resources management in order to bioremediation purification compound represented by a variety of techniques is an inevitable trend of development. Its core is the use of high-performance composite microbial or hydroponic cultivation of plants, the metabolic activity of aquatic animals and plants on the water environment in the ammonia nitrogen, nitrite, organic matter and other harmful substances, transfer, conversion and degradation, reducing COD concentration of pollutants in water value; the same time, photosynthetic bacteria can use light and type a simple inorganic substances in water for photosynthesis, fixed nitrogen and phosphorus in water and other elements at the same time, producing oxygen, increase the oxygen content of water, so that aerobic micro-organisms through its own role in the metabolism of organic pollutants in water and broken down into simple inorganic compounds to further absorb and use of the water ammonia nitrogen, total phosphorus and other nutrients and other soluble pollutants, reduce the degree of eutrophication, allowing water to be purified and restored, to reach a new the ecological balance. From a technical nature, such purification technology of bioremediation is a natural resilience and self-purification capacity of an enhanced.

Third, China’s rapidly growing water treatment industry, market size

1, the industry development of the overall market size

2005 China circulating water system of governance and integrated water resources management industry, the market scale of 31.52 billion yuan in 2008 to reach 53.04 billion yuan, an increase of the speed continued to increase, now nearly 20%.

The rapid growth of market size is a double-pull the inevitable result of demand factors: First, under the control of a rigid national policy needs, which is mainly manifested in the country promote the cause of water pollution control and promote the implementation of energy-saving emission reduction, emphasis on water recycling, to solve water shortage regional water policy issues arising needs; second is economic development and improved living standards resulting from internal demand, mainly in urban upgrading and real estate development in the upscale community building, people’s demands for improvement in their living environment led to the park green building aspects of the water caused by the demand. The first category is mainly to promote the demand for recycled water market, small and medium-scale industrial wastewater treatment market development, the second is the promotion of rainwater, landscape water treatment and wastewater treatment market.

In November 2008 after the hit by the economic crisis, marked slowdown in China’s economic development, water downstream demand growth slowed. In response to the economic crisis, China began implementing the 4 trillion of investment plans to stimulate the economy in 2008, the central arranged 11 billion for environmental infrastructure, including pipeline construction, sewage treatment plants, waste treatment plant construction. In 2009, the Central is expected to arrange more than 200 billion yuan in environmental protection. Early in 2009 issued a “Circular Economy Promotion Law of The People’s Republic of China” to encourage re-use of resources. This series of measures to help prevent China’s economic development has been little impact on the economic crisis factors, GDP growth is expected to continue to be maintained at 7% above the pace of urbanization will continue to accelerate. Statistics show that in 2009 the Ministry of Construction, the National cities officially designated as 660, 338.05 million were urban, urban area of 399,000 square kilometers. According to the present 42% of urban sewage treatment capacity is no percentage calculations, there are 277 cities in China involving 140 million total population of 168,000 square kilometers need to build various types of wastewater treatment and water recycling facilities, this part of the market conservatively estimated at about 38.4 billion. In accordance with the release of the proportion of 20% per year of recycled water governance and integrated water resources management system, the new demand of the market size of up to 7.7 billion; the original cities and other geographical conservative estimate of the scale of new demand of up to one billion yuan. Can be expected to see in the next annual cycle of water governance and integrated water resources management system, new demands in the size of the market capacity of 87 billion yuan, 53.04 billion yuan with the 2008 compared to the scale growth rate reached 16.4%. This as the growth rate as a predictor of the baseline (below the level of the current growth rate) on the size of the market the next few years were rough estimate, is expected in 2009 circulating water system of governance and integrated water resources management market size of up to 61.74 billion yuan, to the 2013 there was an increased to RMB 113.34 billion.

2, circulating water system management industry overview

Circulating water system management sector include central air-conditioning cooling circulating water treatment, refrigeration cycle of water treatment, heating water, central heating circulating water treatment, industrial cooling, chilled water circulating few segments of equipment production and sales. Such equipment is mainly used in commercial construction, municipal engineering, industrial and mining enterprises, high-end residential and other projects. The last century, 80 years ago, almost no recycled water for processing, mainly to re-replenishment model. Later, the introduction of chemical treatment, but under the high cost of domestic pharmaceutical overseas pharmacy hard to limit compliance, physical law came into being, with the scarcity of water resources continue to appear, circulating water treatment method is also progress. After nearly 10 years of development, China has made recycled water market, rapid development, it is still at a very early stage.

The past 30 years, the size of China’s economy continued to grow throughout the city to accelerate construction, particularly in urban construction, real estate as a key industry was growing rapidly, which contributed to circulating water system management market demand expansion. Along with the national launch of a number of investment incentives and industrial revitalization planning, industry use recycled water demand significantly. In 2005, China circulating water system of governance industry market scale reached 4.72 billion yuan, by 2008 it reached 7.7 billion yuan, the growth rate reached 17.7%.

National investment incentive policies and urbanization process has led to circulating water system management market, growth in demand for guaranteed, expected future size of the market growth rate will be maintained at around 20%. In accordance with the overall market growth rate of 16.4% as the baseline forecast is expected in 2009 circulating water system management industry market size of up to 8.96 billion yuan by 2013 to reach 16.45 billion yuan.

3, integrated water resources management industry overview

Integrated water resources management sector mainly include wastewater treatment, landscape and environmental water treatment, rainwater use, urban sewage and waste utilization, general production of sewage and waste utilization of several market segments. Is mainly used in living areas, industrial and mining enterprises, scenic areas, large-scale venues such occasions. Abroad, such as France, Britain and other high level of urbanization and the environmental awareness of a strong country attaches great importance to sewage treatment, rainwater utilization, landscape water use management and production of issues such as domestic sewage, governance is as high as 80%. Late the development of this field in China, large-scale wastewater treatment market is almost a monopoly for foreign enterprise products, landscape water, rainwater utilization is just beginning.

Into 2009, with plans to implement the revitalization of China’s various industries, as well as energy-saving emission reduction work carried out, gradually weakened the impact of the economic crisis. The market demand for comprehensive management of water resources directly related to the size of urban construction, tourism development and investment in areas such as industrial plants has developed steadily. Water treatment under the national policy to promote market demand for increasingly rigid in the “Eleventh Five-Year” end and “Shier Wu,” During the show, while the ever-increasing standard of living of the people even more is the addition of the urban upgrading, landscape water use, demand for such eco-level of water. These are conducive to the comprehensive management of water resources, expanding the size of the market demand.

Swine Flu Vietnam

February 1st, 2007

swine flu vietnam

Is it the end of the world near?

Quakes in China, India, Bhutan, Indonesia, Fiji, Samoa. Flooding in the Philippines, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia poverty and hunger in Africa. The economic recession in Europe, U.S. and Asia. Rise of Islamic terrorism in the Middle East and North Africa, and Southeast Asia. Increased racial tensions in Europe. rampant spread of AIDS, SARS, avian flu, swine flu. Rapid rise in number of cancer patients. - Remember that a prophet once said that the number of earthquakes, tsunamis, wars, storms, floods and pandemics just before 2012.

Tell us what mark the last days, Jesus went on to say: "It rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be great earthquakes, and in one place after another pestilences and food shortages, and there will be terror and large signs from heaven. "(Luke 21:10, 11) Jesus also said:" This good news of the kingdom shall be preached in all the inhabited earth for a witness unto all nations and then shall the end. "(Matthew 24:14) Jesus mentioned events, wars, earthquakes, plagues, food shortages, it would something new in themselves. They have been occurring since the beginning of human history. The difference is that they all come at a time. Ask yourself, "Where has all the aspects mentioned in the Gospels occurred at the same time? Since 1914, man has witnessed devastating wars world, major earthquakes with its tragic consequences, such as tsunamis, widespread diseases like malaria, influenza and AIDS, millions of people consumed by lack of food, a global climate of fear due to threats of terrorism and weapons of mass destruction, and the preaching of good news around the world heavenly God's kingdom. These events have occurred just as Jesus predicted. Keep in mind also what the apostle Paul wrote: "Know this, that in times of the last days critical, difficult to deal with the desire to be here. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, self-assuming, haughty, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, faithless, without natural affection, not subject to any agreement, slanderers, without self-control, fierce, without love of goodness, betrayers, headstrong, puffed up with pride, lovers of pleasures rather than lovers of God, having a form of godly devotion but proving false to his power. "(2 Timothy 3:1-5) Yes," critical time "marked by widespread lawlessness, wickedness, cruelty and aggression in search of itself it would be evident throughout the land. Some people shudder at the thought of "the last days." (2 Timothy 3:1) Everything you imagine are the moments critical. Why are so many throughout the ages awaits them? Because the last few days also indicate that better times to come. War, conflict civil, crime, violence and hunger are some of the things that affect humanity today and make millions of people live in fear and dread. Do any of these affected you? Then note what God promises: "Just a little more, and the wicked will be no more… The meek ones themselves will possess the earth, which are with its truth exquisite delight in the abundance of peace. "-Psalm 37:10, 11." My people must live in a quiet and stay in residences of full confidence and in undisturbed resting places. "Isaiah 32:18 -." Come to be a lot of grain in the earth at the top of the mountains there will be an overflow. "-Psalm 72:16. "As one listens to me, he will live in safety and tranquility of fear of calamity."-Proverbs 1:33. "No resident say, 'I'm sick. '"Isaiah 33:24." [God] will wipe every tear from their eyes and death will be no more, neither mourning nor outcry nor pain any more. The former things have passed. "-Revelation 21:4." As the last enemy, death is to be reduced to nothing. "-1 Corinthians 15:26. These perspectives can be yours, because the Bible assures us: "] [God's will is that all kinds of men to be saved and come to an accurate knowledge of truth." (1 Timothy 2:4)

“Anomaly - The Anti-Buddha”

“New struggles.- After Buddha was dead, his shadow was still shown for centuries in a cave- a tremendous, gruesome shadow. God is dead: but given the way men are, there may still be caves for thousands of years in which his shadow will be shown.- And we-we still have to vanquish his shadow, too.” -Friedrich Nietzsche, The Gay Science (1882)

With Buddhism attracting more and more attention today I feel compelled to share my thoughts about my experiences Buddhism. In an attempt to kill two birds with one essay I hope to explain 1) why I no longer find Buddhism satisfactory while 2)simultaneously providing a brief introduction to the philosophy of Friedrich Nietszche.

Before making clear Buddhism’s difficulties, let me briefly propose an alternative philosophic approach inspired by one of my very first philosophical and stylistic influences, the German individualist Friedrich Nietzsche. The father of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud, “several times said of Nietzsche that he had more penetrating knowledge of himself than any other man who ever lived or was ever likely to live” (according to Ernest Jones, a biographer ofFreud). Nietzsch Like many youths seduced by Nietzsche’s philosophy, I admired his übermencsh in Thus Spake Zarathrustra, his attacks upon authority, slave morality, religious superstition, and his harsh sarcastic tone. He seemed to prick the surreptitious bubbles of the status quo. With such polemics as “If it does not kill me, it makes me stronger” and “God is dead”, his writings are perhaps a bit over the top, but nonetheless as I reread them, they inspire excitement and convey a richness that I did not appreciate upon my first reading, nearly a decade ago.Had I understood Nietzsche’s perspectivism properly I could have seen it for the safeguard that it was, a warning against philosophic system-building. Instead, I incorrectly understood his perspectivism as an argument for a plurality of truths (none of which can be the correct one). In my mind, this interpretation undermined all of his provocative assertions from the very beginning. How could I take Nietzsche seriously once I discovered that he did not take the truth seriously?”This ultimate, most joyous, most wantonly extravagant Yes to life represents not only the highest insight but also the deepest, that which is most strictly confirmed and born out by truth and science. Nothing in existence may be subtracted, nothing is indispensable- those aspects of existence which Christians and other nihilists repudiate are actually on an infinitely higher level in the order of rank among values than that which the instinct of decadence could approve and call good. To comprehend this requires courage and, as a condition of that, an excess of strength: for precisely as far as courage may venture forward, precisely according to that measure of strength on approaches the truth. Knowledge, saying Yes to reality, is just as necessary for the strong as cowardice and the flight from reality- as the ‘ideal’ is for the weak, who are inspired by weakness.” What could be better? Realism, objectivity, freedom, peace, tranquillity and happiness; it sounds like a perfect system. I was soon to discover, however, that these noble ends of Buddhism could not be achieved by Buddhist means.First a little history; Buddhism is a religion named after the Buddha, or Enlightened One. The Buddha was an actual man, a prince in fact, named Gautama (in Pali, Gotama) who lived in Northern India during the turn of the sixth century B.C. Sifting fact from fiction in the story of Gautama, historical scholars tell of a prince who abandoned his wife, child, and life of luxury in search of the spiritual cure for suffering.

His search started with severe asceticism. Unfortunately, Gautama wasted nearly six years of his life at the feet of sado-masochistic teachers before realizing that such methods did not lead to the spiritual cure for suffering. During his search he became frustrated and more determined than ever to discover Nirvana, he decided to sit beneath a bodhi tree and not get up until he found the pathway to Nirvana. He lived a long life, dying at eighty, and spent by meditating and propounding his views to his follower-monks.

I do not intend to write a blanket dismissal of Buddhist philosophy. There are some quite attractive aspects to the Buddhist philosophy, relatively speaking. In a short book called What I Believe Bertrand Russell wrote, “God and immortality, the central dogmas of the Christian religion, find no support in science. It cannot be said that either doctrine is essential to religion, since neither is found in Buddhism.” Buddhism does not oppose science andreason in the same way and to the massive degree that Christianity historically has. Nietzsche validates this assertion in Human, All-Too-Human where he writes,”knowledge, science-insofar as science has existed-raisin oneself above other men through the logical discipline and training of thought, were just as much demanded among the Buddhists, as a sign of holiness, as the same qualities were repudiated and pronounced heretical in the Christian world where they were held to be signs of unholiness” (page 154, Basic Writings of Nietzsche). The Buddhist “holy” respect for science and objectivity is a function of the Buddhist view of psychology and epistemology. Buddha saw mind, not as a spirit opposed to matter, but as an integrated and conditionally free-willed [cetana] part of oneself. The mind-body dichotomy of Descartes’ Meditations that has become so deeply planted in Western culture and religion does not exist for Buddha. Descartes has enriched Western culture with his coordinate geometry, but when viewed in light of Nietzsche’s perspectivism, one can accept his mathematic without having to accept his dualistic metaphysics, or his whole system for that manner. In fact, a Buddhist a might probably prefer the converse formulation of Descartes’ famous “I think, therefore I am”, that is “sum ergo cogito.” In many ways, for the Buddhist, consciousness is a function of the brain in the way that digestion is a function of the stomach. This consciousness [Vinnanakkhandha] “is a reaction or response which has one of the six faculties [eye, ear, nose, tongue, body and mind] as its basis, and one of the six corresponding physical phenomena [visible form, sound, odour, taste, tangible things and mind-objects, that is, an idea or thought] as its object” (What The Buddha Taught, page 23). Consciousness not only perceives, but perceives “something”, that is, reality. For the Buddha, reality exists as witnessed by the senses. This sounds more common-sensical than Descartes’ somewhat Augustinian system where the “I” is “really distinct” from any realembodiment. What is interesting here is that Buddhists treat the mind as one of the senses, not as thintegrator and conceptualizer of data that it seems to be. Perhaps this failure to recognize consciousness as a processor of sensory data has relations to the Buddhist’s chronic dismissal of the ego called Anatta, or TheDoctrine of No Soul. This is where I must refuse Buddhist doctrine, primarily Buddha’s concept of dukkha, and the”Four Noble Truths” that derive from it. The Pali word Dukkha (or the “First Noble Truth”) represents the Buddhist’s rather pessimistic view of life that in ordinary usage means “suffering.” Dukkha tells followers of Buddhism that suffering is the way of the world and that to alleviate suffering one needs to eliminate all desire. This focus upon the existence of suffering and the elimination of desire seems somewhat masochistic and frustrating. It completely ignores the desire for thecessation of desire, ad infinitum. It all seems strange to me.I do not believe that it is humanly possible to eliminate desire, therefore to ask someone to alleviate suffering by eliminating their desires seems to be a doomed project. My best argument here is to petition the reader to honestly have one day without desiring anything. It is impossible. Happiness (sukkha), on the other hand, is the result of pursuing and achieving goals which aid in one’s survival,well-being, and prosperity. Anyone may define well-being and prosperity in completely different ways since any twopeople’s minds and goals are as different as any two snowflakes, but survival always means satisfying basic desires like those for food, shelter, and water that minimize dukkha. To act against one’s natural inclination to want to survive by willing the cessation of “desire” is not just Buddhist, it is suicidal. The “Second Noble Truth” reveals the source of dukkha to be “thirst” or desire. Again, here I found much todisagree with Buddhism. I find desire to be a virtue, not a vice. Desire is a natural function of being alive.Desire does not cause suffering per se, as the Buddha maintains. Instead desire acts as an individual’s impetus forinventing the means to alleviate suffering. It is desire that drives one to achieve, to create, to fight for survival and satisfaction. However, to desire one must be self-interested that first assumes a “self” in which to have interest. (Now desire can also drive some to kill, destroy, and lie. However, to blame desire for the evil actions some use to attain the objects of their desires seems “simpliciter” to me.)Buddhism meets this challenge by dismissing the self as an illusion in the concept of Anatta, or the Doctrine Of No Soul. To the Buddha, the self or Atman (ego) was an ever-changing composite of the Five Aggregates, namely matter, sensations, perceptions, mental formations, and consciousness. For Buddha, since these five composites were in flux, they somehow ceased to exist. Obviously, this is a non sequitur (at least Heraclitus thought the stream you are standing in exists, although it is not the same one you were standing a moment ago).Obviously, because something is dynamic does not doom it to non-existence. As far as I can tell by introspection, my ego does exist, albeit dynamically. This is not to say that I am defending the Cartesian “Cogito Ergo Sum.” What I am saying, however, is that a “sum” implies “cogito”. The Third and Fourth “Noble Truths” try to cement one’s involvement in Buddhism by first easing one’s anxiety about dukkha. The “Third Noble Truth” says that it is possible to end dukkha. The Fourth tells you that you can do so by following the “Path”(i.e.Buddhism) to Nirvana. In essence this “Path” says there is a middle path between the false alternatives of hedonism and asceticism, in a clear misuse of the mean. The Alternative: Nietzschean Individualism”The end of Christianity -at the hands of its own morality (which cannot be replaced), which turns against the Christian God: the sense of truthfulness, highly developed by Christianity, is nauseated by the falseness and mendaciousness of all the world and of history; rebound from ‘God is the truth’ to the fanatical faith ‘All is false’; an active Buddhism” (Nietzsche excerpted from The Will To Power from Existentialism from Dostoevsky to Sartre, page 110, edited by Walter Kaufmann). Buddhism has a strong pull spiritually, particularly to those in need of direction philosophically. Its strong orientation towards an awareness of reality is definitely a virtue. Yet I cannot fundamentally endorse Buddhism due to its dismissal of the ego and focus on suffering. In my opinion, to call self-interested desire the “cause of suffering” is misdiagnoses of the highest degree and dooms the Buddha’s followers to a cynical life of quiet defeat where pain is confirming and prosperity bitterly endured. As I can see it, self-interested desire is actually the impetus for cures to suffering (tangentially, read Connie Zweig’s The Death of Self in a Postmodern World for very different interpretation of the relationship between Nietzsche and Buddha in The Truth About the Truth, edited by Walter Truett Anderson.) I found Buddhist teachings useful at one point in my life and encourage others to pursue the “enlightened” way, but not uncritically. I think the Buddha put it best when he described Buddhism as a raft that one should use when one comes to river. Use the raft to cross the turbulent waters. Once you have reached the other side safely, do not carry the raft upon your back clumsily. Leave it behind and continue along your journey.

Swine Flu Northern Hemisphere

June 29th, 2006

swine flu northern hemisphere

What Do We Know Now?

We were all told that any virus could sneak up on us from behind while we were looking in the H5N1 direction, and yet this outbreak of H1N1 was not expected.  Not in specific terms, but it certainly was expected in general terms.  Whatever the source or the label, a pandemic is a pandemic; and preparations are necessary.

The stunning speed of spread was something we were also told to expect of a pandemic virus, but when the first news reached us of an outbreak in Mexico City, and by noon of the same day it had spread to California, Texas, and Kansas, we were taken aback.  By mid-afternoon it exhibited itself in Canada and Britain.  Same day.

Whether the death toll has been significant or not, the evidence of the incredible spread of a virus should make us seriously consider our vulnerabilities.  Some may say it was all a bust, we were all ramped up for a rocket that fizzled.  Others are looking at this through the experience of past pandemics and recognizing the similarity to the typical wave pattern of other pandemic infections.

“Pandemic,” refers to geography, not to severity of the illness.  The number of countries of contagion have merited the ranking of a Stage 5 category, not the number of deaths.  The severity of the virus is limited in the first wave for two very significant reasons.  Firstly, in the northern hemisphere the flu season is typically November to April, and is coming to an end for this year.  Remember, flu viruses thrive in the cold, unlike bacteria which are killed by freezing.

Secondly, it is typical of a flu virus to circulate in waves, likely two or even three.  The second wave usually is the one that mutates into the super-killer wave.  We could expect the timing of this wave to be in the fall, when the virus has had its “dry run” and has had time to adapt efficiently to human hosts, and re-visit at a time when seasonal viruses thrive and we are most vulnerable to flu viruses in general.

In addition, world wide, the resources, attention and response to the H1N1 swine flu outbreak have been completely appropriate.

We all know, and are likely even related to, at least one skeptic, whose voice scoffs in our ear at every mention of readiness.  Some of the other relatives, on general principle, are then yelling about the sky falling with every cloud that passes across the sun.  It’s easy to lose balance on this topic, and it’s even easier to take our ease and see this wave of H1N1 as a bullet missed.  We may even decide the storm has passed and put pandemic concerns back on the shelf.

  1. This age group normally should be the last to succumb to a flu virus, but their more efficient immune systems are shocked into an over-reactive mode that turns the body’s defenses against itself.

Another lesson we are learning from this experience is that “flu”, as a term, is deceptive.  Flu doesn’t begin to describe the phenomenal disruption to the immune system these pandemic viruses produce.  Like the dreaded SARS, it’s not just coughing, sneezing, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, and feeling like crap.  This pandemic flu produces seizures, paralysis, coma, and of course, death.

The word is out about hand-washing, cough and sneeze etiquette, staying home if sick, and keeping an eye on people who might be ill at school, work, or on a plane.  The media have all pounded home the proper messages.  There may have been a few places on earth that didn’t have the information, but not likely any more.

So, don’t toss the hand-sanitizer.  Don’t alter your hygiene protocols.  Eat right.  Get plenty of exercise.  Try to eliminate as much stress in your life as you can.  Get enough rest.  We believe this is the first wave, and we hope we’re wrong.  Judging by world reactions to the announcement of Stage 5 it’s encouraging to see that the dust is being blown off pandemic plans across the globe.  Perhaps with this warning and heightened concern we will see subsequent waves pass as mildly as this.

Stay well.  Take care.

China Swine Flu Quarantine

Thailand News. Travel Situation Update

The tourism industry in Thailand truly took off when US soldiers started to arrive in the 1960s for Rest and Recuperation (R&R) during the Vietnam War period. Coinciding, international mass tourism sharply increased during the same period due to the rising standard of living, more people acquiring more free time and due to improvements in technology making it possible to travel further, faster, cheaper and in greater numbers, epitomized by the Boeing 747 which first flew commercially in 1970. Thailand was one of the major players in Asia to capitalize on this then-new trend.

Tourist numbers have grown from 336,000 foreign visitors and 54,000 R&R soldiers in 1967 to over 14 million international guests visiting Thailand in 2007. The average duration of their stay in 2007 was 9.19 days, generating an estimated 547,782 million Thai baht, around 11 billion Euros. In 2006, Thailand was the 18th most visited country in the World Tourism rankings with 13.9 million visitors. France, comparable to Thailand in size and population, led the list with over 79 million foreign tourists.

According to the Tourism Authority of Thailand, 55% of the tourists in 2007 came from the Asia Pacific region, Japanese and Malaysians forming the two biggest groups. The largest groups of Western tourists come from Britain, Germany, Scandinavia and the United States. The number of tourists arriving from the Middle East and Russia is on the rise. Around 55% of Thailand’s tourists are return visitors. The peak period is during the Christmas and New Year holidays when Western tourists flee the cold conditions back home.

No patience with Swine Flu in Thailand

Laboratory tests conducted on a 42-year-old Thai woman who was quarantined on Tuesday for possible swine-flu infection showed that she is free from the deadly virus, a hospital official said on Wednesday.

Two tests were made on samples from the woman. She was found to be suffering from ordinary human flu, Chulalongkorn Hospital virus specialist Dr Yong Pooworawan said at a press conference.

The woman was admitted to Chulalongkorn hospital on Tuesday after having developed a fever last Thursday on arriving back from Singapore. Her trip had earlier taken her to Mexico and the USA between April 3 and 19.

On Tuesday, the Public Health Ministry issued a warning that travelers should avoid going to Mexico or the US if possible.

Public Health Minister Witthaya Kaewparadai confirmed in parliament on Wednesday that the swine flu virus strain responsible for the global alert has not spread to Thailand.

He said he had ordered provincial health units throughout the country to stock medicines used to treat influenza and to be ready in case the deadly variant of the virus spreads to Asia.

Democrat MP Somboon Uthaiwienkul urged the government to register migrants coming to work in Thailand because they could easily become a burden on society whenever a disease spreads.

Health official’s overseas treating people who have been infected with swine fever confirm that the generic antiviral drug oseltamivir, sold commercially as Tami flu, is effective against the virus.

CNN International today announced the results of its Online Consumer Survey (OCS) on Travel and Tourism which reveals that Thailand was chosen as representing the best value for money for travelers in the Asia Pacific region. The survey conducted across CNN English websites had more than 5,000 respondents globally. Thailand came out as the best value in Asia-Pacific for respondents over China in second place and India in third.

The comprehensive survey also revealed that although times are tough, the recession hasn’t reduced people’s desire to travel. On the contrary — people are trading down, not trading out — but not compromising their experience. In addition, more business leaders are likely to travel over the next 12 months than in the past year.

* Overall the survey indicated that more people would travel for holiday over the next 12 months than last year, but 1 in 5 would make fewer trips

* 46% of business travelers in Asia Pacific claim the economic environment has had no impact on their business travel plans.

* 79% of Asia-Pac respondents feel they are likely to take a vacation in the region within the next 12 months. And the economic downturn isn’t affecting everyone’s travel plans. Asia-Pacific holidaymakers spent an average of just over US$4,000 on their last vacation, - ahead of the global average of $3,700.

* 71% of CNN’s audience of global travelers flies long-haul for leisure. Respondents take an average of 14 days vacation a year and holiday an average of three times a year.

Brand image and reputation also remains a critical factor for air travel, and survey respondents clearly feel that preferred, trusted airlines are able to command a premium. Respondents are also more likely to do fewer trips than look for cheaper hotels or discounted flights with budget airlines.

* 58% of Asia Pacific respondents are ‘willing to pay more to travel with my preferred airline’ (vs. 50% globally and just 41% of North American respondents)

* 61% of these Asia Pacific air travelers ‘prefer to fly with a trusted brand regardless of cost’. Furthermore, in difficult financial times, there is value for advertisers in targeting premium audiences.

* 83% of business travelers influence the choice of airlines and hotels when it comes to corporate travel.

* 40% of those who travel for work fly business or first class, make an average of five business trips per year and are away for an average of 19 days per year.

William Hsu, VP Advertising Sales, CNN International added “These results send a strong message to tourism boards that smart destination branding is critical for country differentiation and return on investment.”

The survey comes as the latest PAX research for the full year 2008 once again reconfirms CNN as the leading channel in its genre for reaching each of the 3 main PAX groups: Affluent Adults, Business Decision Makers and Top Management. Among the Top Management group CNN is the leading international channel regardless of genre, while CNN.com continues to generate substantially higher reach than all other measured media sites.

Swine Flu Pregnant Death

August 8th, 2004

swine flu pregnant death

Should i get the swine flu injection? or could in have side effects for my baby ?

im 15 weeks pregnant and my midwife offered me the swine flu injection because of the death rates. lots of people are getting them, but im unsure because could there me side effects this hasnt been around long so how would the doctors know it wont harm my baby. should i go for it or not

I will explain it to you like my obgyn explained it to me. When people get the seasonal flu, it affects their upper lungs, they can cough and thuff can come up, and the congestion is easier to clear up. With H1N1, it affects the lower lungs, getting into them deeper, and you cant just cough to clear it up, and even at times, ventilators and respirators are not working as well to clear it up. When a woman is pregnant, as she gets further along, her growing uterus pushes up on her lungs, and this creates less room for our lungs to expand when taking in air. Many women complain of shortness of breath during pregnancy and this is the reason. So think of this along with a pregnant woman getting swine flu. That is why it can be so dangerous for pregnant women to get it.
No one knows what effects, if any, there are on the baby, however so far women who are pregnant and have gotten the shot so far their babies are still developing and growing normally, mine included. I got the shot 2 weeks ago yesterday, and my decision was based on what i mentioned above, plus the fact that I have chronic bronchitis. For me to get the regular flu without being pregnant is hard enough on my lungs, so I dont even want to know the efects of the swine flu on me when I am pregnant.
The woman above, who is TTC, mentioned that there could be side effects, and babies could end up handicapped or whatnot. I hope and pray that that is not the case, but you know what? That would not make me love my child any less than if it was perfectly healthy. I am a mother, and getting pregnant yeilds no guarantees, vaccine or no vaccine, and there is always a chance of something going wrong, before during or after birth. But I know with the vaccine, I will be here to care for and love my child, where as if I die of swine flu, I will not be here for my baby, and the baby may die too.
whatever decision you make, make sure it is right for you and not because someone told you this or that. Assess your situation with your doctor and family, assess your risks, and go from there. My obgyn is not big on medications during pregnancy, and doesnt even like to give epidurals because of the very small chance of paralysis, but even he strongly recommends the vaccine to his patients. Good luck with your decision and remember, no matter what you decide, you have your childs best interest in mind, and that is what is most important

EDIT: I have checked the links that “Is It Over Yet” has listed, and as for the comment about 2000 adverse effects and 6 deaths it states :
Of the 1922 reports of adverse events, 84 (4% of all reports) described serious adverse events, including 6 reports of death. This number of serious reports is similar to the number of serious reports after a comparable number of seasonal flu vaccine is distributed
