Flu Shot Dystonia Cheerleader Hoax

December 30th, 2009

Is the story of the cheerleader who got dystonia after getting a flu shot a hoax?

is this real?
and should you be scared?
watch it if you haven’t seen it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oNuExNQ7WJo&feature=related

Desiree Jennings decided it would be a good idea to get the seasonal flu shot, but ten days after her shot she got sick and was finally diagnosed with Dystonia. Read more on her Desiree’s heartbreaking story below. Do you think the flu girl is a hoax?

There are many that wonder if the flu girl video is a hoax? But sadly it appears to be all too real, especially for Desiree Jennings.

Jennings went to her local Safeway and got the flu shot as a precaution so she wouldn’t be out sick with the flu, but soon she became very ill.

“I got flu-like symptoms — nausea, vomiting, body aches, fever — then was lethargic for a week and started blacking out,” said Jennings, an AOL employee and Washington Redskins ambassador hoping to become a cheerleader.

Doctors were baffled as to why Desiree’s speech and walking were so affected. So Desiree saw neurologists, physical therapists and psychologists.

Drugstore Clinics Widespread, Despite Criticisms: Texas May See More Walk-In Options

Basic healthcare may have just gotten easier, albeit controversially. The number of walk-in clinics at drugstores like Walgreens, CVS, Wal-Mart, and Duane Reade has been increasing over the last two years, and very little is slowing down plans to add hundreds more across the country. Recent studies cite shorter waiting periods, lower costs, and instant prescription fills for the clinics, in contrast to more expensive and time-consuming trips to doctors’ offices. The majority of these clinics also accept most health insurance plans, leaving little incentive for on-the-go Americans to wait days or weeks for non-specialized appointments in conventional offices.

The rise in healthcare costs, the decrease in the number able to afford private health insurance, and the inadequate number of primary care physicians across the country have all been building up to this — perhaps inevitable — solution. One can now walk in to any number of seven hundred clinics located in several nationwide drug and discount store chains and be seen, on average, in under twenty-five minutes. While the clinics are not recommended for anything but basic care — such as treating a cold, flu, or mild infection — that’s just fine for many, especially those going back to school, who are often bombarded by common, acute illnesses in those first, returning months.

Texas, a state in which twenty-five percent of the populace is without health insurance, may particularly stand to benefit from increased healthcare options. A visit to a MinuteClinic, a wholly owned subsidiary of CVS Caremark, costs an average of eighteen dollars less than other primary-care clinics, according to HealthPartners, a Minnesota health maintenance organization. Emergency rooms across Dallas, Houston, Austin, and the rest of the state are overloaded with the uninsured seeking basic, non-emergency care simply because they have nowhere else to go. Offering easier, cheaper access to basic diagnostic care and treatments may alleviate some of the burden on both individuals and local facilities overwhelmed by too many people and not enough funding.

Twenty percent of people in the United States have no or inadequate access to a primary care physician, with few indications that statistic will improve in the near future. In 2004, seventy-five percent of the counties in Texas lacked sufficient numbers of primary care physicians to meet local needs, and twenty-four counties had none at all. Drugstore clinics often employ more cost-effective nurse practitioners and physician assistants — healthcare workers with the ability to diagnose and treat everyday conditions, but who are under the supervision of a licensed medical doctor. These workers are growing more and more popular within the industry, partially as a result of the shortage of family practitioners.

But doctors’ groups are protesting, and some with good cause. Many of these groups stand to lose substantial business, and are arguing that such facilities may be unable to provide the proper standards of care, including hygiene and safety. “We’ve got big problems in healthcare, and this is not the answer,” said Rick Kellerman, president of the American Academy of Family Physicians.

Many state officials agree, at least to a certain extent. The walk-in clinics are currently being monitored by a confusing mix of agencies applying a wide and inconsistent range of regulations and enforcement principles. After Massachusetts doctors’ groups issued loud protests to the proposed opening of a MinuteClinic, the Health Department issued guidelines for the state, calling for the facilities to clearly specify that they are “limited service clinics.” The American Medical Association is pushing for similar national requirements on the drugstore facilities, urging local and federal governments to require them to be “well-defined and limited [in] scope.” Two public hearings on the issue are scheduled in Massachusetts in September.

Conflicts of interest between the clinics and the drugstores cannot be ignored, either. New York state regulators are investigating possible inappropriate relationships between drug companies and medical providers. The risk, they say, is of healthcare facilities being used improperly to increase business or to funnel patients into their adjacent pharmacies. In certain states, like New York, it is also necessary for clinics to operate as independent practices or professional corporations; i.e., they must not be a part of the drugstore chains themselves.

“If we determine the business corporations [like CVS] are practicing medicine, then they are illegally practicing the profession and we have the authority to investigate,” said Frank Munoz, associate commissioner of the New York State Education Department’s Office of Professions.

Duane Reade, a pharmacy chain located primarily on the East coast, is attempting to limit possible complications by partnering up with well-known hospitals, such as New York City’s Beth Israel Medical Center and St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center. Duane Reade clinics will be staffed by medical doctors, versus nurse practitioners or physician assistants, and have admitting privileges to partnering facilities. Such agreements will give the doctors the ability to send those in need of emergency care straight to the hospital, and streamline patients’ procedures to see specialists. Additionally, the clinics will function as private medical practices, run by the physicians themselves, who will lease the space from the corporation.

Michael C. Howe, chief executive of MinuteClinic, which runs over two hundred clinics nationwide, defends CVS’s practices as they are, however. “We are transparent with regulators,” he said, and concerns “are being raised by people who have not really studied the model.”

Being aware of current events and issues affecting your health is an important part of taking care of yourself. Minding your health will certainly affect you as you age, and eventually your wallet.

Swine Flu Contagious Periods

December 29th, 2009

Swine H1N1 Flu:2009

Swine H1N1 Flu:2009

Dr.Kedar Karki

Swine flu , now known as the 2009 H1N1 flu, is caused by the orthomyxovirus which usually affects pigs but viral mutations allows the virus to cross species to other hosts like humans. The swine influenza virus (SIV) is another example of cross species viral infection which was previously seen with other Zoonotic infections like in civets to humans SARS or Sudden Acute Respiratory Syndrome and from birds to humans as seen with avian (bird) flu.

Unlike SARS and bird flu, swine flu has mutated to the point where the virus can now spread from human-to-human. This current mutation is the cause of the global scare of the recent 2009 outbreak which is feared to become a pandemic. With the popularity of air travel, infected passengers from one region can easily travel to other nations and result in new outbreaks occurring in regions that were not prone to swine flu.

The current human-to-human transmission of swine flu is caused by droplet spread through the contact with infected body fluids as in saliva or mucus when sneezing.

How is Swine Flu H1N1 Spread?

The incubation period (time between exposure and onset of symptoms) is still uncertain, but it appears to be 3-4 days.

All flus are spread by droplets that spray out as a person sneezes or coughs. You can catch Swine Flu H1N1 or any flu virus if:

  1. You are standing within three feet of an uncovered cough or sneeze and droplets make contact with you or if you inhale them.
  2. The droplets land on hard surfaces, like a desk top or keyboard. Even after the droplet dries a flu virus could live for over an hour. You can catch the virus by touching an infected surface then touching your eyes, nose, or mouth.
  3. You can give to the flu to somebody else by touching their eyes, nose, or mouth if the virus is on your hand.
  4. Somebody coughs sneezes or blows their nose into a tissue, and the wet tissue makes contact with their hand or the tissue tears and the contents make contact with their hand. If they touch hard surfaces or shake hands before they wash their hands then they could spread a virus. Flu viruses can also be spread by handling a contaminated cloth handkerchief then touching people or surfaces.
  5. An infected person touches their eyes, nose or mouth then touches other surfaces, objects or people before washing their hands.

This is not the same Swine Flu virus people were immunized against in the 1970’s. There is a vaccine for the 2009 Swine Flu Influenza A H1N1 virus under development but even with fast tracking it will take months before it is ready for human trial.

Swine Flu H1N1 is not spread by pigs and you cannot catch Swine Flu H1N1 by eating pork or using medications that are derived from pigs (porcine).

Symptoms of Swine Flu

Swine flu infection causes symptoms that are similar to the symptoms of influenza infection as seen during the annual ‘flu’ season. This may result in many cases of swine flu being misdiagnosed as a common cold or the ‘flu’ and if infected persons do not seek professional medical treatment, the infection can spread further in the general population.

The general symptoms of swine flu include:

  1. Fever with or without chills.
  2. Sore throat.
  3. Respiratory symptoms, usually a cough or less frequently as dyspnoea (difficulty breathing) or pneumonia.
  4. Fatigue and lethargy
  5. Myalgia (general body aches)
  6. Headaches
  7. Diarrhea
  8. Vomiting

The current swine flu epidemic has seen gastrointestinal symptoms like diarrhea and vomiting that are more severe than previous swine flu outbreaks. Unfortunately these gastrointestinal symptoms may often be misdiagnosed as a ‘gastric flu’ and it is important to consult with your medical practitioner if your symptoms persist.

Preventing the Spread of Swine Flu H1N1

According to the CDC, proper hand washing is the most effective means of preventing the spread of disease.

  1. Alcohol-based hand sanitizers are also considered effective.
  2. Use disposable tissues, clean your hands after every use.
  3. Cough into your elbow or shoulder if you do not have a tissue.
  4. Preventative treatments (such as Tamiflu) are not recommended for healthy people as this could potentially lead to resistance. Only seek treatment if you have symptoms.
  5. People with flu- like symptoms should avoid public places. If your child’s school is closed do not place your child in group settings such as daycare.
  6. If there are confirmed cases in your area, limit exposure by avoiding public places and clean your hands often while out and upon returning home.
  7. An infected person is contagious about 1 day before they have symptoms so follow proper hand washing guidelines or use alcohol based hand sanitizers often to prevent the accidental spread of the flu.
  8. The contagious period lasts for about 7 days after symptoms start, probably longer in children.

The Mechanical Properties Of Precious Stones

1, the hardness

Hardness - that precious ability to resist external mechanical action. The relative hardness and hardness is divided into absolute hardness. Using the relative hardness of hardness The scheme, which consists of 10 kinds of common minerals. 10 small to large order of hardness: ① talc; ② gypsum; ③ Calcite; ④ fluorite; ⑤ apatite; ⑥ feldspar; ⑦ quartz; ⑧ topaz; ⑨ corundum; ⑩ diamond. Test method is used to characterize these minerals precious stones engraved with marks obtained, the precious stones jewelry supplier than the hard minerals such as gold topaz emerald can be carved, and engraved fixed corundum, its relative hardness of about 8.5. In addition to standard hardness minerals, but also commonly used to determine the hardness of other simple tools, such as nail hardness of about 2.0 to 2.5, copper 3.0 key, small blades, 5.0 to 5.5, glass is 6.0. Note that it should not have been refined with good carved stones to avoid damage gem. Absolute hardness is measured using microhardness data, but not commonly used in practice.

In addition to equiaxed crystalline and amorphous gem, the other most of the stones as the nature of anisotropy in different crystal directions with different hardness, the most obvious is kyanite, parallel to the cylinder on the crystal surface hardness 4.5, the direction of the vertical cylinder hardness of 6.5.

Use of differential hardness of china gemstone wholesaler is a very effective method.

2, cleavage, fracture, crack reason

Cleavage - is the sapphire crystal in the external force against time, a certain degree of crystal orientation along the crack of the nature of the crack in the formation of the cleavage plane is face to face. Mineralogy will be produced by cleavage were divided into five easy to difficult, that is very complete, full, medium, not completely, absolutely incomplete. Such as muscovite with a very complete set of cleavage, along its direction can peel into very thin sheets of muscovite; Rhodonite with complete cleavage, while garnet, quartz, tourmaline and other reasons are puzzling. Cleavage can be identified using some gems, but cleavage is restricted gem quality and processing of adverse factors.

Fracture - refers to any fracture after being hit by the china gemstone supplie to open the section, often uneven or rugged. Difficult to produce cleavage of the sapphire crystal will be easy to produce fracture. Such as Quartz (Crystal) produces easy hit conchoidal fracture.

Crack reason - that some students with twin gems even after being hit by the power split along the twin nature of joints, such as moonstones often along the lattice inside the double twin crystal plane crack reasons appear.

3, ductile and brittle

The ability to resist external damage gem stones, said the resilience, toughness little gem is brittleness. Toughness (resistance) and the hardness ratio does not necessarily have a fixed relationship, such as the hardness of diamonds, the largest, but its toughness is small, about 7.5, so although it is hard wear, but are easily broken when hit. A lot of stones are more brittle, or worn in the processing time required to be taken to avoid ground impact and falling. On the contrary, the toughness of jade is very high.

Making Native Flutes

December 28th, 2009

making native flutes

Sound and Meditation

It is common knowledge that meditation is a major tool for handling symptoms of stress. Developing a meditation practice can lower blood pressure, boost the immune system, calm the emotions and mind and connect you deeply with your inner essence or spirit. And there are many, many ways to meditate. In this article you are offered the opportunity to meditate with sound, or more specifically, the silence between the sounds.

Our sense of hearing is the most acutely tuned over a wider range than any of the other senses. Not only that, we hear with the whole body. Dr. Alfred Tomatis called our sense of hearing “a portal into the brain.”

Sound (and hearing) and meditation can be a powerful combination. Studies have already shown that the combination of sound and guided meditation boosts the immune system more effectively than sound or meditation alone. Another powerful way of using sound and meditation together is the singing of mantras. An example of a well-known and loved mantra is “Om mani padme hum.”

For the purpose of this article, the focus for the sound meditations below is more on the silence or space in between the sounds. There are two sound meditations offered for your exploration, a meditation with a flute track and a Tibetan sound meditation.

Flute Meditation

The first meditation is a five-minute track I recorded with my native flute. Before you begin either meditation, check in on the state of your body, mind and emotions, then check in again after the meditation to see if you notice any change. By listening to the flute meditation twice with a different focus each time, you can explore first, the sounds themselves and second, the spaces between the sounds.

To access the sound file please copy and paste the link at the end of the resource box below into your browser. The file is stored on my web site.

1. You will discover on the first listening that the sounds are unpredictable. This is intentional and offers the opportunity to exercise the inner ear and engage the mind. Another way to focus on the sounds is to just allow them to wash over you as you relax.

Make sure you check in with your body, mind and emotions before listening for the second time. This can give you valuable information to how the sound and/or your focus on the sound affect you. You might want your journal or a notepad and pen close by to take note as you explore the sound.

2. As you listen to the flute track the second time, focus on the space between the sounds. Note what happens in your body, mind and emotional state. Is it easier or more challenging than listening to the sounds? Does one way of listening need more concentration than the other? Our sense of focused listening is extremely sensitive and subtle.

Tibetan Sound Meditation

The second sound meditation is a Tibetan sound meditation. You can do this one waiting for the bus, standing in line or sitting on a park bench. Opportunities for this technique are limitless and offer a profound way to enter into emptiness. I experienced this technique at Tom Kenyon’s, Sound Healer’s Training. The instructions for this meditation are included in his book, “Brain States” on page 190. See below:

“The following exercise is a Tibetan Sound Meditation that brings you into a direct awareness of the space or silence from which all sound vibration emerges. It develops subtle perception and intuition and has a very calming influence on the body and mind.

1. Sit in a comfortable position and close your eyes.

2. Let your breath be slow and calm, taking about six seconds for the inhale and about six seconds for the inhale and about six seconds for the exhale. Breathe in this way for a minute or so before going on to Step 3.

3. Continuing to breathe in this calm and slow pattern, move your awareness into the sounds around you. But instead of focusing your attention on the sounds themselves, focus on the space or silence around the sound.

4. Get a sense of the spatial orientation of each sound. That is, notice if a particular sound is close or faraway, above you or below you, etc.

5. Try to get a felt sense of the space or silence around each sound you hear and of the greater space that holds all of the sounds including you. Practice this form for ten to thirty minutes, longer if you wish.

Practicing this meditation once a day for thirty days or so will generate profound benefits, including a greater sense of calm and peace as well as health benefits associated with reduced stress. In addition, the consistent practice of this meditation will give you a deep and intuitive knowledge of how sound and vibration relate to your own consciousness.”

As with the flute meditation, you might want to have a journal nearby to jot down observations and insights gained in your explorations.

Whole nuts should not be given in any case to pre-school age children because of the risk of them choking, but you should also remember that children with atopic conditions are more vulnerable to nut allergies.

Food manufacturers now label all foods containing nuts, but if you are buying unlabelled foods or eating out, ask about the ingredients. Artificial colorings and additives are also triggers, so try to include as many natural, unprocessed foods as possible in your child’s diet.

If you suspect that certain sweets or fizzy drinks are causing attacks, avoid them. This will not only help you decide whether there is a problem, but also limit your child’s intake of junk food.

Dairy products are often connected with allergies, especially eczema, but you should always ask your doctor’s advice before removing them from a child’s diet. Pollen is very hard to avoid during summer months. The worst time is early summer when so many plants are in flower.

Rain literally washes pollen away, so the pollen count is highest during a dry spell and you may have to be extra vigilant at this time. Get into the habit of finding out about the daily pollen count, and then plan your child’s activities accordingly.

Encourage him to play outside only early in the morning or just before bed when the pollen count is lower. Resist the temptation to bring cur flowers inside the house. Open windows and doors to air the house early in the morning and then keep them closed for the rest of the day.

Your doctor gives you the diagnosis, your child is suffering from pediatric asthma. As you grapple with this piece of unwanted news, you take comfort that he is able to prescribe a drug that will help. He may hand you some pamphlets on how to cope with an asthma attack.

And so your child is now becoming dependent on drugs to stay alive and reasonably well. All well and good, but did the doctor tell you of the side effects of what he is prescribing? Since asthma is a chronic illness, your child is going to take these drugs regularly, for years and years. Surely there has to be a better, kinder, more effective way than this? Of course there is. Pediatric asthma does not have to depend on drugs, which in the end may cause more harm than good.

But, let us have a look at what is standard treatment. There will probably be two inhalers - one a “preventer” and the other a “reliever”. The reliever will contain a Bronchodilator, possibly several types of Bronchodilators. This is a drug to enlarge the diameter of the airways. Fair enough, just what one needs during an asthma attack. Any possible side effects? Ah, yes, just a few. Nervousness and restlessness to the point of finding it impossible to sleep is one. Nausea and vomiting and depending on the Bronchodilator prescribed, your child could also suffer from diarrhea, headaches, depression, irregular heart beat and leg cramps.

The preventers have a different set of problems. Normally made of Corticosteroids (anti-inflammatory drugs) they are powerful and have to be monitored carefully. People have died while switching to inhaled medication from oral medication. Unexplained mood swings (over and above the teenage phase) are another unwelcome side effect. Brittle bones, weak muscles, weight gain, cataracts, coughing add to the medley of side effects.

Do not hang clothes outside to dry or bedding to air when the pollen count is high. If your child reacts badly to pollen, ask his school if he can stay inside at times when there is a high pollen count and when the grass has just been cut. Remind him never to roll in grass, even when he sees his friends doing so.
