Also, avoid touching your face throughout the day; viruses often enter our body through our eyes, nose, and mouth.

1. Get enough sleep and minimize stress as much as possible. Your body cannot heal without adequate rest. Exercise, yoga, and meditation can all reduce the effects that stress has on the body.

Home Remedies For Head Cold, Cold Remedies That Work

There are no cures for a common cold. It cures by itself in a week’s time. However, read on for some remedies that will help alleviate the symptoms…

                                       

Have you ever wondered why the cold is known as the ‘common’ cold? It is because at any given point, one in sixty people will be suffering from the cold, hence the term common.

Cold is caused by ‘rhinovirus’ (’rhin’ in Greek means nose). These virus are present in the air that we breathe and the things that we touch. There are nearly 200 different strains of virus that can infiltrate the lining of the nose and throat causing an immune system reaction that brings with it the symptoms of cold and sore throat.

Despite what some people may tell you, a common cold has no cure. Only remedies are available that can help you feel better. The cold will be cured by itself in about a week’s time. Some cold remedies are very ancient while others are relatively new.

Cure for the Common Cold

Here are some of the remedies that actually seem to work:

  • Chicken Soup: Chicken soup has helped alleviate the discomfort caused by cold for centuries. Research has shown that the chicken soup helps by working in two ways. Firstly, it behaves as an anti-inflammatory and inhibits the movement of neutrophils which are the immune system cells and participate in the body’s inflammatory response. Secondly, it helps by temporarily speeding the movement of the mucus through the nose thereby relieving congestion and reducing the time that the virus is in contact with the lining of the nose. And the good news is that research has also shown that canned chicken soup works just as well as homemade soup. And if you are a vegetarian, you could replace the chicken with some vegetables like carrot and peas and that should do the trick for you.
  • Water and Fluids: Water will not help flush the cold from the system. However, fluids like water, juice, warm broth and lemon water with honey will help loosen congestion and prevent dehydration. However, liquids like alcohol and coffee should be avoided as they further dehydrate the body.
  • Saline Water: In an 8 ounce of glass, dissolve about half a teaspoon of salt and gargle with the solution every four hours. This will provide definite relief to a sore and scratchy throat.
  • Hot Shower: A quick hot shower will help reduce congestion and provide temporary relief. The steam will help shrink the mucous membranes in the nose and throat which help with the drainage of mucus. But remember to keep the shower brief and do not soak yourself in the tub. Even if the water in the tub is hot initially, it will gradually become colder and can worsen the symptoms.
  • Humidity: The reason as to why cold is very common in the winters is because the cold virus thrives in dry conditions. The dry air can also make the mucus membrane of the nose dry causing a stuffy nose and a scratchy throat. Adding a humidifier in your house will help by adding moisture to the house. But remember that the humidifier brings with it mold, fungi and bacteria which can cause other complications. Hence it is imperative to keep your humidifier clean and change the water regularly.
  • Vitamin C: It is believed that vitamin C acts as a natural decongestant and can also reduce the duration of the cold. However, this belief has not been clinically proven. The ideal dosage of vitamin C is a capsule of 500 mg. Anything greater than this will not be absorbed by the body.
  • Sleep: Your body needs adequate rest and sleep to fight infection. Take ample rest and cozy up in bed with warm blankets.
  • Over the Counter Medications: Non-prescription decongestions and pain relief are available that do offer relief from various symptoms but do remember that that these drugs will neither cure cold nor shorten its duration. Research has also shown that if taken for an extended period of time, these drugs can make the symptoms worse and can also cause damage to the liver. I believe that you should consider taking these drugs only if no other option is available.

There are many wives tales that make tall claims about curing cold but they usually do not help. Ask around and find out if the tale actually has helped anyone before blindly accepting any suggestion. It can do more harm than good.

Murphy’s Cold Sore Remedy

Acute upper respiratory tract infections generally are divided into the following five types:

Common Cold
This familiar syndrome is characterized mainly by nasal obstruction with discharge, sore throat, sneezing, hoarseness, varying degrees of malaise, cough,sinusitis and otitis. Fever is usually absent in adults but may be present in small children.

Croup (Laryngotracheobronchitis)

This is most commonly a parainfluenza virus infection of small children with anatomic location in the subglottal area. It produces hoarseness, a "seal bark" cough and signs of upper airway obstruction with inspiratory stridor xiphoid and suprasternal retraction, but no pain on swallowing.

Pharyngo Conjunctival Fever
The causes of this disorder are adenovirus, Coxsackie and Influenza A, B and C virus, and it is characterized mainly by fever, sore throat, increased discharge in the eyes, photophobia and congestion of conjunctiva.

Bacterial Pharyngotonsillitis
The most common cause of the illness is hemolytic streptococcus, pneumococcus and staphylococcus. Its features are abrupt onset with chills and fever, and marked congestion of the pharynx. The temperature is above 39 C and the tonsil is enlarged with yellowish exudate on the superficial mucosa.

Chinese Medicine Diagnosis
Essentials of diagnosis are: Abrupt onset with fever, chills, malaise, cough, coryza and muscle aches. Pain, fever and catarrhal symptoms. Secondary bacterial infection with increased white blood cell. Chest x-ray is normal.

Gypsy Cold Remedy Tea

Whilst ginseng is often thought of as a good herb for the elderly, a recent study found it helped prevent colds and flu in those susceptible to them. Learn more here, as well as important differences between Siberian and Panax ginseng.

                                   

Ginseng is a very popular herbal supplement, and is used for a host of problems. These can range from improvements in memory, poor concentration, fatigue, hypotension, problems associated with aging, mild depression, and even giving birth!

There are two types of ginseng that are used medicinally. Panax ginseng is also known as Asian ginseng. It is this variant that has a long history of use in China and other Asian countries. American ginseng is not considered as effective as Panax ginseng, though it may suit some people better.

Siberian ginseng is actually not in the same genus as Panax and American ginseng, and its active constituents are also quite different. Thus, even though it is nicknamed ‘ginseng’, it is actually not a ginseng. To get a sense of the differences in plant classification that a genus represents, look at the term ‘homo sapien’, as applied to humans. The genus is represented by the term ‘Homo’. ‘Sapiens’ is used to name the species. Both American and Asian ginseng belong to the same genus - ‘Panax’.

Another important difference between Siberian ‘ginseng’ and the Panax varieties, is that Siberian ginseng does not contain ginsenosides. Ginsenosides are found only in plants belonging to the Panax genus. They are believed to be responsible for ginseng’s medicinal effects, and there are a number of different variants that have slightly different effects. The exact amounts of the different ginsenosides predominant in various ginseng plants does vary - even from plant to plant. Things like where the plants were grown, and how old they were when they were harvested, can all have an impact on their ginsenoside content. For this reason, it really pays to get good quality ginseng, whether it’s the American or Asian variety you’re after.

Whilst there have been problems of credibility associated with some ginseng studies, possibly related to the variety in strength and quality of the supplements used, there have been good quality studies as well.

Ginseng For Colds

One study, from the University of Western Ontario and the University of Alberta, was designed as a placebo controlled, randomized, double blind study of 170 people between the ages of 18 and 65 years. This is considered a good-quality study design amongst scientists. They used a standardized extract of American ginseng, which came in a 200g capsule, with 80% poly-furanosyl-pyranosyl-saccharides from the root.

The people in the study had a history of getting at least 2 colds in the previous year. They were told to take 2 capsules of either ginseng or the placebo (they didn’t know which they were getting), every day for 4 months. The trial started at the beginning of the cold and flu season.

The results were interesting. Of those taking ginseng, only 10% got two or more colds, compared to 22.8% of those taking the placebo. This was comparable with the results of common antiviral drugs that are used to prevent or treat flu. And of those who took the ginseng but still got sick, their symptoms were less severe.

Thus ginseng may provide a valuable immune boost to those who are susceptible to winter colds. This is especially valid for the elderly, as ginseng has been shown to have other important benefits for memory and aging.

You’re way too busy to be sick but your nose is stuffed and runny, your throat is sore, and you feel achy and chilled. Another miserable cold. There is no cure for the common cold but Aromatherapy will make you feel better and will speed your recovery. It’s easy to use and worth the effort.

If you do not have a cold now, you will get one. It’s just a matter of time. The common cold is called that because it is the most prevalent illness in humankind afflicting billions of people worldwide every year and causing billions of dollars in lost productivity. In the meantime, you will feel miserable and will probably spread your cold because living in quarantine is usually not an option.

What is a cold?

We all know what a cold is, right? It’s a viral infection of the upper respiratory system most commonly affecting the nose and throat. Your body’s response to the infection produces all the nasty symptoms; coughing, sneezing, runny nose, nasal congestion, sore throat, headaches, chills and sometimes fever. More than 200 different viruses can cause a cold and these can mutate, so only partial immunity is possible.

In case you’re wondering, cold viruses only live in the noses of humans and other primates so your dog or cat can not catch your cold. That’s good because no one else will spend time with you when you’re really sick.

Can I prevent a cold?

You can’t, unless you want to live like a hermit. Cold viruses are highly contagious and are spread through the air by sneezing and coughing and also by touch. They can survive for several hours on inanimate objects like a telephone receiver or a door knob, waiting to be transferred to the next hapless victim. If you spend time in close proximity with someone that has a cold, you are quite likely to contract the cold yourself. Frequently washing your hands is the most effective preventive measure that you can take, but even this is difficult in most social settings without looking germ phobic and it won’t protect you from airborne viruses.

Are colds a serious illness?

For normally healthy individuals, colds are generally not serious. Since everyone gets them, it’s difficult to solicit any sympathy when it’s your turn to be sick but they can take you out of commission for a day or two.

Colds should not be ignored. They can make you more susceptible to bacterial infections that can develop into serious conditions such as sinusitis, middle ear infections, bronchitis, and pneumonia. Colds will also present a serious risk to anyone suffering from asthma or emphysema as they will aggravate the illness.

Treat your cold with Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is a good alternative to over the counter cold remedies which contain pain medication, decongestants and cough suppressants. These "remedies" control symptoms without treating the underlying cause and carry the risk of side effects. Many people take cold remedies to enable them to keep on going and work through the cold but in doing so, they can make it harder for their body to recover.

The holistic approach of Aromatherapy is perfectly suited to the treatment of colds. There is no mechanistic medical treatment for a cold. You can’t take a pill and make it go away. Your body has to heal itself. Certain essential oils can provide relief from the cold symptoms, reduce the chance of secondary infection, by killing bacteria and also shorten the duration of the cold by boosting the body’s immune system. Full recovery means a more competent immune system, better health and less chance of contracting a cold in the future.

Simple cold treatments

The best Aromatherapy cold treatments are the simplest to use; inhalation and hot baths.

Inhalation clears congested nasal passages, soothes inflamed membranes, and kills bacteria. There are several essential oils that are effective in treating colds or the flu. Eucalyptus and Tea Tree are powerful antiviral agents but Rosemary, Pine and Frankincense are also good choices. Lavender is preferred for a late evening treatment as it will help to relax you for a good night’s rest. Thyme is particularly effective in relieving sore throats and is well known to be one of the most effective natural immune boosters.

Pour boiling water from a kettle into a bowl. Add 5 drops of essential oil. Place your head over the steam and drape a towel over your head to contain the vapor. Breathe deeply through your nose. Use this treatment at the first sign of your cold symptoms and you may be able to prevent the cold from developing.

Inhalation can also be achieved by diffusing essential oils into the air where you are resting. The vapor will help you recover and will also help to contain the infection so that others in your family do not catch it. Remember to use Lavender at night.

A personal inhaler is a handy, portable way to treat your cold symptoms but in a pinch you can put one or two drops of essential oil on a tissue to inhale the vapor.

Perhaps the most popular Aromatherapy treatment for colds is a hot bath with 10 drops of essential oil added to the bath water. The oil is absorbed through the skin and by inhalation. The hot, steamy bath will ease your aches and chills and prepare you for restful sleep while you breathe in the healing vapors. Marjoram is a good essential oil to add to your bath water blend as it is very effective in relieving the aches and chills of a cold and will also treat headaches that sometimes accompany a cold.

Use these simple Aromatherapy treatments and don’t forget to drink plenty of fluids, get a good night’s rest and of course, enjoy a delicious, hot bowl of chicken soup. Before you know it you will be back in business and ready to take on the world.

But since it’s a virus, all you can do is treat the symptoms. Now, back to those cold remedies. It all begins with rest. The more you allow your body to rest, the quicker it will fight off this virus. All you need to do is take your daily multivitamin! This provides your body with nutrients and helps it battle off the cold or flu virus. Indulge in hot showers. You may feel the chills come on, but you don’t have to take it like a man. Relax in a hot bath or take a long shower to relieve sinus pressure and warm-up. Furthermore, there are new-age cold remedies that help dramatically which is called Zicam. This is a Zinc infused supplement that speeds colds and viruses along by strengthening the immune system. And you can find it several forms of Zicam at any drugstore. It comes in a nasal spray, nasal swab, melt-away tablet, chew able and mouth spray. Basically a variation to suit pretty much anyone afflicted by a cold.

And surely there are some cold remedies out there that I have yet to try that something has to work. I can take some medications that work for a while, but after they wear off I feel worse than before I took it. Since I cannot be on a steady diet of medicines while I am watching a young child, I have to think of other cold remedies to help ease my cold into something a little more bearable. When I take cold medications I get clumsy, and that is not a good thing when my daughter is so active and gets into so much trouble.

Even though my mom suggest some interesting cold remedies to me, but none of them have worked like I need them to. She has told me to put a cough drop in a bowl with boiling water and to then cover my head with a towel and put it over the bowl. I swear I saw that in a movie once, and I wonder if it really works or if she is pulling my leg. She’s a nurse, so that is why I asked her for cold remedies, but she is also a smart aleck, so really don’t know what to think. I do know that it doesn’t work very well, though it does offer minimal comfort on my worst days.

Although, there are a lot of cold remedies out there, but I fear that none of them are made with moms in mind, or at least I should say that are not made with me in mind. Dayquil works wonders, but it also has a bad affect on my head and my mind. It makes me loopy, and I cannot concentrate while I am on it. Nyquil works at night, and so do some other meds. These cold remedies worry me though, because I cannot wake up properly if my daughter needs me. Until someone can help me, I’m afraid I must suffer through.

Prevention is another aspect you should consider aside from cold remedies. You can find effective ways to prevent the common cold. One here is to ALWAYS wash your hands. Keep them clean, because every time you touch things, you pick up germs. Naturally you’ll touch your mouth, eyes, etc afterwards, which can get you sick. Cleanliness is next to godliness.

Have you ever wondered why the cold is known as the ‘common’ cold? It is because at any given point, one in sixty people will be suffering from the cold, hence the term common.

Cold is caused by ‘rhinovirus’ (’rhin’ in Greek means nose). These virus are present in the air that we breathe and the things that we touch. There are nearly 200 different strains of virus that can infiltrate the lining of the nose and throat causing an immune system reaction that brings with it the symptoms of cold and sore throat.

Despite what some people may tell you, a common cold has no cure. Only remedies are available that can help you feel better. The cold will be cured by itself in about a week’s time. Some cold remedies are very ancient while others are relatively new.

Cure for the Common Cold

Here are some of the remedies that actually seem to work:

  • Chicken Soup: Chicken soup has helped alleviate the discomfort caused by cold for centuries. Research has shown that the chicken soup helps by working in two ways. Firstly, it behaves as an anti-inflammatory and inhibits the movement of neutrophils which are the immune system cells and participate in the body’s inflammatory response. Secondly, it helps by temporarily speeding the movement of the mucus through the nose thereby relieving congestion and reducing the time that the virus is in contact with the lining of the nose. And the good news is that research has also shown that canned chicken soup works just as well as homemade soup. And if you are a vegetarian, you could replace the chicken with some vegetables like carrot and peas and that should do the trick for you.
  • Water and Fluids: Water will not help flush the cold from the system. However, fluids like water, juice, warm broth and lemon water with honey will help loosen congestion and prevent dehydration. However, liquids like alcohol and coffee should be avoided as they further dehydrate the body.
  • Saline Water: In an 8 ounce of glass, dissolve about half a teaspoon of salt and gargle with the solution every four hours. This will provide definite relief to a sore and scratchy throat.
  • Hot Shower: A quick hot shower will help reduce congestion and provide temporary relief. The steam will help shrink the mucous membranes in the nose and throat which help with the drainage of mucus. But remember to keep the shower brief and do not soak yourself in the tub. Even if the water in the tub is hot initially, it will gradually become colder and can worsen the symptoms.
  • Humidity: The reason as to why cold is very common in the winters is because the cold virus thrives in dry conditions. The dry air can also make the mucus membrane of the nose dry causing a stuffy nose and a scratchy throat. Adding a humidifier in your house will help by adding moisture to the house. But remember that the humidifier brings with it mold, fungi and bacteria which can cause other complications. Hence it is imperative to keep your humidifier clean and change the water regularly.
  • Vitamin C: It is believed that vitamin C acts as a natural decongestant and can also reduce the duration of the cold. However, this belief has not been clinically proven. The ideal dosage of vitamin C is a capsule of 500 mg. Anything greater than this will not be absorbed by the body.
  • Sleep: Your body needs adequate rest and sleep to fight infection. Take ample rest and cozy up in bed with warm blankets.
  • Over the Counter Medications: Non-prescription decongestions and pain relief are available that do offer relief from various symptoms but do remember that that these drugs will neither cure cold nor shorten its duration. Research has also shown that if taken for an extended period of time, these drugs can make the symptoms worse and can also cause damage to the liver. I believe that you should consider taking these drugs only if no other option is available.

There are many wives tales that make tall claims about curing cold but they usually do not help. Ask around and find out if the tale actually has helped anyone before blindly accepting any suggestion. It can do more harm than good.
