Is your baby taking sodium fluoride drops?

My doctor for my son in sodium fluoride drops, I know that the purpose is to prevent cavities, but I've also read some scary things about it. Do others have their babies in fluoride drops (by mouth)? Cali Dept. of Public Health Rad Tech Certificate- Full or Limited Tech?

I am an RT living in Georgia. We do not have state licensing here, only national certification with the ARRT. I am relocating to California, and I have obtained a Radiologic Technology Certificate from the California Department of Public Health. I have recently discovered that there are “full” and “limited” x-ray techs in Cali. I also heard some talk about a fluoro license. Will the certificate from the RHB allow me to do x-ray as well as fluoro, and make me a “full tech”, whatever that is?

3. Does a physician’s office have to give the shot to small children? No, there are pharmacies within drug stores who will vaccinate children as young as 2 years of age. Expect guideline for local pharmacies to differ, so call before you go to make sure that can do what you need.

4. Is the flu shot better than the flu mist? Yes, health care professionals agree that both are good for the duration of one flu season. Given that the worse months for flu are December, January and February both should provide protection through those months.

However, if the flu season extends later than usual into March and April, it is thought that those who have received the Flu Mist will have greater coverage. In other words the flu shot tends to show a diminished capacity after 4 months, and the flu mist tends to last 5 to 6 months.

5. What is the difference between the shot and the mist? The injection does contain viruses but they are dead. The mist is given by spraying the vaccine up each nostril, and contains live but weakened viruses.

6. Who should avoid the mist? People older than 50, those who have asthma or who use an inhaler for wheezing are not good candidates for the mist.

7. How long does it take for the vaccine to become effective? It takes several weeks for the body to react by making antibodies which then help protect it from getting the flu at all or at least lessen the seriousness of the case.

8. Will I get a case of the flu after being vaccinated? The answer is no for the both injection and the mist. Even though the mist contains live viruses, they are not potent enough to cause a case of the flu.

9. When is the best time to be vaccinated? As soon as the vaccine is available is the best time to receive it. Because it takes several weeks for the vaccine to offer protection, the sooner you receive the shot the sooner you’re covered. Getting it early means you avoid having supplies run low and having to wait until more is available.

10. Where can I get the most up to date information on the flu? Your physician and local media are good resources. Also, The Center for Disease Control (CDC) provides up to the minute information with a website and an 800 number.

Breastfeeding: Clogged Duct? Mastitis?

My daughter is 2 weeks old. I’ve been breastfeeding her and pumping after she finishes to build my supply. For the past 2 days I’ve had a hard lump in my right breast. I looked up clogged ducts and mastitis. Last night I had some flu-like symptoms for about 4 hours (that are gone now). No fever. Leads me to believe it’s not mastitis, but none of the remedies for clogged ducts have worked. The lump is hot and hard and when I try to massage it and work it out, it’s very sore like a deep deep bruise. Thoughts?

This may be a clogged milk duct. I have them occasionally because I exclusively nurse my baby most of the week but I work around 20 hours a weeks and when I am at work, I pump. The pump sometimes will give me clogged milk ducts.

When this happens, feed your baby on the side that hurts so that his nose is pointed to the spot that hurts. I know this may be difficult if the soreness is underneath your breast but it will help.

What I normally do is lay the baby down on the bed or couch and basically hang my breast over his face so that gravity pulls down the milk. Then I have a handmade hot compress that I made with uncooked rice and a sock. I heat it in the microwave for about 35-40 seconds and while my breast is hanging with the bump or sore area pointed to his nose, I apply the compress to the area. The gravity will pull down the milk while the baby sucks and the warm compress will heat the clogged milk and basically melt it to unclog.

I hope that makes sense to you. Trust me it works. I have had to do it a few times in the last couple months.
