Non-Toxic Approaches To Childrens Dentistry

Written by Chicagohealers.com practitioner by Dr Steven Koos, D.D.S., M.D. - 1. I am very interested in your new Eco-Friendly DentistryTM practice. Can you tell me what makes it different from other dentists?
Since this is a new concept and we actually coined the term, it is probably best to define what Eco-Friendly DentistryTM actually is first. Eco-Friendly Dentistry is a newly evolving practice of dentistry, which encompasses a simultaneous devotion to sustainability, prevention, precaution, and a minimally invasive patient-centric, as well as global-centric treatment philosophy. Eco-Friendly Dentistry, through green design and operations, protects the immediate health of patients and team members, protects the health of the surrounding community, and protects the health of the global community and natural resources.

ORA Dental Studio and ORA Oral Surgery & Implant Studio has proudly become the first and only green group dental practice in the nation. Our team at ORA truly embodies Eco-Friendly Dentistry and we have distinguished ourselves as leaders in the dental community through our steadfast commitment to the environment. We are significantly different from other dentists by not only building offices from the ground up as sustainable, green LEED projects, but also by employing green business practices and most importantly by comprehensively practicing green healthcare. As a landmark achievement unique to ORA, we are the first dental facility in the country to generate zero bio-hazardous waste.

2. I know my readers are concerned with some of the ingredients in toothpaste, like sodium laurel sulfate, silica, chalk and fluoride to name a few. What do you recommend as a non-toxic toothpaste for children?
This is an important concern and our recommendations for children are not really any different than what we recommend to adults. Growing evidence supports the idea that what goes in your mouth stays in your body, even after you brush and swish. Your mouth and gums absorb ingredients, and act as an entry point into your system. As a result, your choice of oral products is as important as the food you eat, what you put on your skin, and all the other products you choose for a healthy home environment. Small changes made to our daily habits can really add up. Two very good products out there that avoid toxic ingredients are:

- Tom’s of Maine Natural ToothpastesTM, Adult and Children Formulations – these products do not contain triclosan; saccharin; artificial sweeteners, preservatives, colors, or flavors; or animal ingredients. They are tested without the use of animals. They have a refreshing natural flavor from real wintergreen and peppermint oils, not artificial sweeteners like saccharin. Some preparations are fluoride free and others contain only naturally sourced fluoride and zinc citrate, a naturally occurring mineral, which interferes with the calcification of plaque into tartar.

- The Natural Dentist ToothpastesTM, Adult and Children Formulations – these products do not contain any artificial dyes or flavors. Mainstream products use artificial additives such as Blue #1, Yellow #5 and other FD&C colorants. The Natural Dentist uses vegetable juices such as red cabbage, purple carrot, beet, tomato and annatto. The company does not contribute to the manufacture of artificial ingredients, therefore, they are not introduced into the ground water or water treatment systems when consumers use their products. Their toothpastes are made without Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS is a foaming detergent that can irritate your mouth and has been linked to canker sores) Instead they use a natural coconut based oil as an effective surfactant. Their products are sold without a cardboard box – an important “green” step that reduces excess packaging. While eliminating a box may seem small, consider that one billion tubes of toothpaste in boxes are sold each year, contributing more than 28 million pounds of packaging to the waste stream. The environmental effect is more than the trees that are saved by eliminating the cardboard box — it’s also the energy to manufacture, print and transport the excess packaging.

Your readers’ quest for dental products that have natural, non-toxic ingredients should not end with toothpaste. They should also consider safe, eco-friendly choices for dental floss, toothbrushes and mouth rinse to complete a healthy at-home, eco-friendly dental wellness regimen.

3. We are concerned about mercury in old fillings. What are your recommendations about this issue?
This indeed has been a serious topic of concern for many years now for the public, the ADA, the WHO and the FDA, and would normally require quite a lengthy response.

At ORA, one of our paramount practice tenets is upholding the precautionary principle, which we feel all health professionals and organizations should abide by. The precautionary principle is officially defined as “a moral principle, which states that if an action or policy might cause severe or irreversible harm to the public or to the environment, in the absence of a scientific consensus that harm would not ensue, the burden of proof falls on those who would advocate taking the action. The principle implies that there is a responsibility to intervene and protect the public from exposure to harm where scientific investigation discovers a plausible risk in the course of having screened for other suspected causes. The protections that mitigate suspected risks can be relaxed only if further scientific findings emerge that more robustly support an alternative explanation.

So for us, the answer is quite simple. ORA Dental Studio has proudly partnered with the WHO (World Health Organization) to advance its Mercury Free Health Care Program. Mercury is one of the world’s most ubiquitous heavy metal neurotoxicants and ORA is leading the way as a designated mercury-free practice that also implements the safe removal of mercury containing fillings. But the concern for mercury use in healthcare shouldn’t stop with amalgam fillings. ORA Oral Surgery & Implant Studio utilizes only mercury-free thermometers, and sphygmomanometers. In addition, in the few locations where we use fluorescent lighting, we purchase only low-mercury fluorescent bulbs that meet the Toxic Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP) standard set by the EPA and we also properly recycle these bulbs at designated recycling centers.

4. Are your sealants, plastics used in mouth guards and retainers, and tooth-colored fillings BPA and phthalate free?
Traditionally, mercury fillings are replaced by tooth colored resin fillings, which contain BPA. This made absolutely no sense to us. BPA, known as Bisphenol A, is an organic compound used as a building block for several important plastics, plastic additives and in composite dental resins. It has been found to be hazardous to humans due to its estrogenic and possible carcinogenic potential. For the safety of our patients, ORA Dental Studio has diligently sought out a BPA-free dental composite resin, which we use exclusively.

Upholding the Precautionary Principle within our practice, ORA Dental Studio is the first dental practice to exclusively utilize a BPA-free dental composite resin. In addition, none of the Invisalign aligners or Vivera retainers that we use contain bisphenol A or any phthalate plasticizers.

5. How else do you limit your patient’s exposure to toxins while visiting your office?
Besides reducing our environmental footprint, having a true healing facility is what my vision was and what we at ORA strive to deliver. We have implemented countless protocols and details to limit our patient’s and our team member’s exposure to toxins. Some of these protocols and innovations include:

- Being a PVC-free, DEHP-free, and latex-free practice
- Having all of our furniture and cushioning BFR-free (Brominated Flame Retardant)
- Non- VOC (volatile organic compounds) paints and textiles preventing off-gassing
- Non-urea-formaldehyde containing, chlorine-free composite wood and agrifibers from recycled content
- Finishes, textiles and veneers made from sustainable, non-toxic, recycled post-industrial and post-consumer waste
- Mercury free, BPA-free treatment
- Digital dental radiography and digital CT scanner – which means over 80% less radiation dose for the patient compared to conventional plain film. Also, no toxic chemical developers and fixatives as well as no lead-foil content to film, nor the carbon-footprint in the manufacturing, packaging and transport of these materials
- Lead-free patient x-ray aprons
- Eco-rock drywallTM, Modular ArtsTM sculptural paneling, 3-FormTM eco-resin doors, all of which are not subject to hazardous polymerization
- EarthwiseTM Energy Star HVAC system with no CFC coolants
- Digital patient charting and registration (paper-free) office
- Non-chemical sterilization, utilizing steam and dry heat, thereby avoiding any noxious chemicals within office and in surrounding environment
- GreenMaidTM green cleaning services
- The ability to process our bio-hazardous waste with a revolutionary state-of-the-art system that renders it non-toxic, non-contaminating and safe for disposal with regular garbage – thereby avoiding harmful incineration, which releases these toxins into the atmosphere.

6. What are the most important things parents can do to help keep their children’s teeth healthy?
Starting at a young age, more frequent (at least bi-annually, if not quarterly) preventative check-ups and professional cleanings. Good healthcare habits and preventative care is built on trusting relationships with the doctor and team, education within the office and at home, and also by example. This means that good dental habits are modeled and learned as our children watch our behavior as parents, coupled with more frequent visits as a family to the dentist. Early detection of decalcification/demineralization is the key, thereby preventing the end stage of bacterial demineralization of tooth structure – namely tooth decay. Diagnostic tools like the DIAGNOdentTM by Kavo, which is a laser detection tool measuring the mineralization loss in teeth, allow clinicians to detect cavity formation at its earliest stages and allow them then to intervene either before the cavity forms with re-mineralization procedures, or it allows them to be minimally invasive with cavity repair. In addition, Ozone therapy is a revolutionary treatment approach that is just on the horizon within dentistry and ORA Dental Studio is one of the first practices in the nation to begin its safe implementation in treating decay in a completely non-invasive way, utilizing the CMU3 device from LIME TechnologiesTM.

So reinforcing thorough home care, healthy eating habits, using safe dental products and quarterly visits to the dentist are all part of the recipe to empower our children to maintaining healthy teeth for their lifetime.

7. How can parents encourage more dentists to take on these non-toxic and green principles? What can parents do right now about BPA in sealants and fillings as well as mercury in fillings?
The medical field has already embraced the fact that the health of the environment and our own health are inextricably linked. And a grand reformation is underway, albeit slow, within the medical industry towards sustainability. The dental industry should follow suit and at ORA we are trying to pave the way for this to happen. The motto we have is “What’s good for the environment is good for the patient” and as such, we have both built and are operating green facilities and comprehensively practicing green healthcare. As doctors, aligned with the Hippocratic Oath, we have an obligation to ensure that we do no harm – not only to the patient but also to the environment. In addition, patients and consumers are beginning to realize that one way that they can contribute to a healthy community and environment is to support green businesses and healthcare facilities. Every dollar spent, in essence, is a vote for or against the environment.

Patients need to encourage their dentists to take on more non-toxic and green practices by voicing their concerns and by starting dialogue with their healthcare providers. Another great resource to start with is the “Green My Dentist” program extended by the EDA (Eco Dentistry Association, www.ecodentistry.org) to help guide patients and their dentists towards better, safer patient health as well as planetary health.

Parents can also choose to have their families treated only by practitioners who practice mercury-free dentistry and who utilize non-BPA containing resins. There is only one BPA-free resin available on the market at the moment, so have your dentist do their homework and specify that this is what you prefer that they utilize.

How to Feng Shui yourself Totally

If Marie Diamond (feng shui guru of gurus) is right, the only solution for my house is to pick it up from where it is right now, shake vigorously to rid it of clutter, then place it down gently at a completely different angle, preferably on the other side of the hill. It would also help to change the directions that the drains run and maybe flatten our neighbour’s house to stop it pointing poison arrows at our front door. Then there’s the question about whether this change would be big enough to shift the house from a period 7 to a period 8 home and what would happen to all the conflict and disaster stars as a result? They would have shifted and hopefully flushed themselves all down the toilet in the process, leaving only abundance and laughing Buddhas in their wake.

Just as I thought I was getting into the swing of the whole subject along comes a second New Year, kind of like a reverb wave that slaps you off your surf board when you’re not looking. Did you know, it starts today? It’s called the year of the Earth Rat and basically it means that the bubbling fountain I’ve just bought isn’t such a good idea anymore.

This reminds me of a period in my life many years ago (more or less another lifetime) when I was studying to be a meteorologist. I kid you not!! What I learnt from this brief escapade with science is that the more you know about anything, the less you know. This was Cape Town University in the 80’s and everyone on campus knew that all you had to do was look out over the Cape Flats and note which way the plume was blowing off the Plumstead cooling towers. You could see in a flash if it was going to rain or not within the next 24 hours. Then I went inside and filled my head with differential equations and convoluted theorems about moving fluid predictions and got so thoroughly confused that I couldn’t have cared less what wind actually was let alone what it was planning to do next.

The only thing I remember from that whole year was a wonderful poem in one of our text books that summed the whole subject up rather neatly. It said, ‘Big whirls have little whirls that feed on their velocity and little whirls have smaller whirls and so on to viscosity. I think the same applies to Feng Shui. The more you know about this topic the less you know and, whatsmore, there are whirls within whirls that make the predictions more and more complex.

I mean, just when you think you have all your chimes and bamboo shoots and Buddhas in the right corners along comes another year to shift everything around, putting a whole new spin on every object in your home. Now I hear that there are monthly shifts too so the whole thing starts to look more and more like the prediction of fluid dynamics on an energetic level, except you’ve got Chinese trial and error to rely on instead of differential equations. So maybe that’s a good thing! Actually seeing a mushroom cloud is easier to comprehend than e=mc2.

There’s a fine line between science and superstition. I think the only difference is whether you’re doing it yourself or simply observing from a distance. As they say about the law of attraction, emotion is the fuel and what you focus on blows up in your face. Maybe that’s the thing about Schrodinger’s cat that got overlooked? Which corner was it the lying in at the time and was the box period 4 or 5? Because that would change the disaster stars for the cat totally and thereby determine whether an optimist or a pessimist was the next one to open the box!

The more I ponder this whole complex subject the more I think there is only one real solution:

Buy a tent and sleep in my garden!

Stomach Flu

stomach flu

Does Oscillococcinum also work to prevent/relieve stomach flu?

I’ve heard this is true, but I’m wondering if anyone has any direct experience. I teach at a preschool, and the stomach flu is going around my classroom. What can I do to prevent catching it? I mean - other than hold my breath for the entire time I’m at work.

I will try to give reasonable money conscious advice on what to do.
I would do all of the following:
1. Wash your hands
2. Use saline to wash your nasal passages (any brand or just homemade salty water)
3. Drink real tea with real lemon with minimum amount sugar. Tea contains antioxidants to boost your immune system. Lemon acidity kills some bugs in your stomach.
4. Use oscillococcinum immediately at the first signs of flu. Any brand will do. Boiron is the most expensive, it has 3 dozes and costs about $16 at my local Whole foods. Next to it is Hyland Flu which cost about $7 for 60 tabs at the store, works well and has some extra ingredients to relieve flu symptoms. To stretch the dollar I usually buy
yellow glass vial with a dropper, fill it with distilled water and dissolve a few tabs/globules there. Shake well and keep it with you. Put a few drops under your tongue when needed up to every 15 minutes. Don’t use if you feel better then when you started using it.

It is preventative in a sense that if you start very early at the beginning of flu (first few hours) it really helps

The best place to stock up online is vitacost.com

Good luck with the flu season!

Flu Green Tea

July 30th, 2009

Can Drinking Green Tea Prevent The Flu?

In the U.S. alone, between 25 and 50 million people get the flu each year. 150,000 people are hospitalized and 30,000-40,000 die. So, it’s clear that getting the flu is a significant health concern.

Most of those who are hospitalized or die from the flu are the very young and the very old; so flu prevention is even more essential for this population group. If you’re concerned about preventing the flu virus this year, here are some things you can do to reduce your risk.

Flu-related deaths usually result from pneumonia and from complications of cardiopulmonary conditions and other chronic diseases. Deaths of older adults account for more than 90% of deaths attributed to pneumonia and influenza.

Get a Flu Shot - Flu shots are highly effective at preventing the most prevalent strain of flu virus each year. For anyone who interacts regularly with the public, and particularly for school age children who are exposed to all sorts of germs each day, this is an important step in staying healthy throughout the flu season. It is a necessary step for the elderly and children three years old and under, who are those most likely to develop serious complications from the flu.

Wash Your Hands - The single most important thing you can do to prevent catching a contagious illness is to keep your hands clean. Wash your hands frequently, using warm water and anti-bacterial soap.

Use Tissues - When you sneeze or cough, be certain to cover your mouth and nose with a tissue. Let the tissue catch the germs and throw it away immediately.

Use an Anti-viral medication - If you find yourself coming down with the flu, see your doctor and get a prescription for an anti-viral medication. These medications are effective at shortening the duration of your symptoms. In addition, some anti-viral medications can prevent you from getting the flu.

These medications are great for those who have a close family member who has contracted the flu, and are certain they have been exposed. They should not be considered a replacement for the flu vaccine, but can be used as an emergency preventer if you didn’t get the flu vaccine and know you’re at particular risk.

Eat healthy - Keeping your immune system strong is critical to disease prevention. A healthy diet, full of fresh fruits and vegetables, along with plenty of rest will help your body be more able to fight off germs that come your way.

Drink green tea - One little known secret about preventing the flu is adding green tea to your diet. Research has shown that green tea is extremely effective at preventing the flu, when consumed regularly. One study, reported by the UK Tea Council showed that green tea can protect in two ways. First, green tea suppresses the growth of influenza cells. Secondly, green tea actually kills off the influenza cells.

And, one thing that’s so great about green tea - it can protect against many strains of the flu virus. The flu vaccine each year just protects against that year’s most prevalent strain.

Green tea has recently garnered much attention for its ability to prevent disease and protect health. Research has shown that green tea’s powerful anti-oxidants are the key to preventing serious illnesses like cancer and cardiovascular disease.

In addition, it’s been shown to regulate blood sugar, which means it may have significant potential in controlling diabetes. And, it has many anti-microbial properties, and may have the ability to kill or prevent other viruses besides the flu.

Anti-oxidants are powerhouses for our health. Each day, as our body converts the food we eat into energy, free radicals are created. These free radicals damage our cells and DNA, creating a process called oxidation throughout our bodies.

If this oxidation is allowed to continue over the years, it leads to disease and early aging. But, anti-oxidants neutralize these free radicals, preventing them from doing their damage.

So, eating a diet rich in anti-oxidants is one of the best things you can do to protect your health. And, green tea is one of the best sources of anti-oxidants around. In addition, anti-oxidants can be found in fruits, vegetables, coffee, red wine and dark chocolate.

If you’re interested in maximizing your anti-oxidant intake, stick to those foods and beverages that have the most potent anti-oxidants. The best sources include:

• Tomatoes
• Artichokes
• Blueberries
• Pomegranates
• Green Tea
• Asparagus

We’re learning that protecting our health and preventing disease is really more in our hands than we’ve previously realized. We have the power to keep our bodies young and healthy far into our old age, and we have the power to prevent short term illnesses, like the flu.

The flu season is a nasty period of winter - and often wreaks havoc on many families. However, with some careful attention to your health, you can prevent the flu and have a healthy and happy winter this year.

Kerr Drug Launches Immunization Program for Flu Season

Kerr Drug, the community pharmacy that pioneered the training of clinical pharmacists to administer vaccines to patients, is making flu shots available immediately to meet what is expected to be an unprecedented demand for flu shots.  The company is also training additional pharmacists, allowing Kerr Drug to assign 115 immunizing pharmacists to its stores throughout North Carolina. Because of the additional resources Kerr Drug is deploying this flu season, the Department of Public Health has chosen Kerr Drug to be one of the first pharmacies to administer the H1N1pandemic flu vaccine later this year.

“Our pharmacists are not just giving seasonal flu shots, they are playing a crucial role in minimizing a pandemic,” says Joe Heidrick, R.Ph, PharmD and Director of Operations for KDI Health Solutions, the clinical subsidiary of Kerr Drug. “Senior citizens and young children are at greater risk of not only getting the flu but also of potentially fatal complications because their body’s immune system is weaker. Those risks are even greater this year because this flu season is expected to be much worse.”

H1N1 Flu Vaccine

Beginning in mid to late October, Kerr Drug’s certified immunizing pharmacists will administer seasonal flu shots in tandem with the H1N1 pandemic flu vaccine.  Kerr Drug will follow the guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices:  The priority groups to receive the vaccine are:

  • Pregnant women
  • Household contacts of infants under six months
  • Healthcare and emergency-services workers
  • Young people between six months and 24 years of age regardless of health status
  • And nonelderly adults with underlying risk condition, such as diabetes and chronic lung disease.

Suffering from these Menopause Symptoms? Hot Flashes, Vaginal Dryness & Low Libido

Researchers have done research on menopause and found out that it occurs in women who are mid-age, which is believe to be between 40 to 60 years of age. It is believed that when women enter the menopause stage they experience changes in their libido and sex drive. It is not totally clear how menopause affect the loss of a woman’s libido. There are between 20% and 45% of women that reported that they experience a decrease in their libido.

What is menopause?

Menopause is considered the undeviating end of a female reproductive system, a considerable length of time before the end of a woman’s existence. Menopause occurs in a multiplicity of animals as well as humans. It is typically an ordinary development. When menopause occurs at midlife it indicates the end of the fertile phase of a woman’s life. Menopause can be easier understood if you compare it to menarche, which is when your period first start. There are many symptoms associated with menopause.

Symptom’s of Female menopause:

Hot flashes are usually experienced as a sensation of forceful heat with sweating and rapid heartbeat and may in general last from two to thirty minutes for each incidence. The sensation of heat usually begins in the face or face and chest, although it may appear elsewhere such as the back of the neck, and it can spread throughout the whole body. Some women pass out if the effects are strong enough. In addition to being an internal sensation, the surface of the skin, especially on the face, becomes hot to the touch. This is the origin of the alternative term “hot flush,” since the sensation of heat is often accompanied by visible reddening of the face.

Insomnia is a symptom of a sleeping disorder exemplified by relentless complexity falling asleep or stays asleep regardless of the occasion. It is typically followed by functional impairment while awake.

Emotional changes, such as mood swings and irritability. A mood swing occurs when a person has a hasty or severe change in their mood. Irritability occurs when a person respond excessively to stimuli.

Lack of sexual drive or Libido.

Memory loss and concentration.

Fluctuate in hormones, irregular and rapid heartbeats.

Generalized itching.

Any women can still experience the excitement and the sexual responses that make sex so incredible before, during and after menopause.

Free Sheet Music Flute Disney

July 28th, 2009

what flute music should i play at my sisters wedding?

my sister is getting married at a resort in Disney World and I’m playing flute. I really need suggestions of what to play. I’m a decent flute player but it would need to be something not incredibly difficult because I would need to learn it by the beginning of December. It can be something classical or modern as long as its not too cheesy. Also, let me know of any good free sheet music sites.

Here you can find a nice selection of classical wedding pieces to choose from:
