Champagne, first discovered in the 5th Century by Romans of Northeast France, is a sparkling wine made with primarily Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier grapes, and manufactured in its namesake Champagne region of France.
Be it Cuvee, (the crème de la crème of all Champagne) Blanc de Noir, Blanc de Blanc or Rose, Champagne without a doubt, represents the very top echelons of style and taste, and for the selective few, it symbolizes a certain rite of passage and rise in society.
Today, drinking Champagne is like consuming other drinks. It’s mixed as cocktails and readily available at most places. How does one begin to purchase the right glasses for such an exquisite potion?
There are a few useful points to consider when purchasing Champagne/ sparkling wine glasses or stemware.
- Champagne is presented best in slim tulip-shaped stemware made of either glass or crystal. Avoid those in pewter or silver, unless you are throwing a Lord of the Rings themed dinner. One of the most enchanting experiences of drinking Champagne is the exhilarating sight of its colour and bubbles rising delicately to the top.
- Some brands to consider, depending on your budget, range from the top-of-the-line mouth-blown Lalique, Waterford or Royal Doulton to those available at stores for a more modest price. The important factor is that your stemware should be able to preserve the temperature and present the Champagne at its best.
- Always ask the staff at hand for assistance; they will be able to advise you well and direct you to the perfect set of stemware. Do not get bullied into buying what you are not comfortable with.
- For novice hosts, purchase stemware that can be used for other types of white wine as well as Champagne, this way you will not get confused on which ones to use when entertaining.
- When serving Champagne at informal gatherings such as barbecues, disposable plastic Champagne flutes might be a good option. There are many designs available at very attractive prices.
- For a refreshing change, buy different glasses, each for every guest. Although they should roughly be in the same theme and make, (tulips in crystal for example) they can come in subtly unusual patterns or colors. Doing this can also be a great conversation piece to break the ice with your guests.
Champagne, in contemporary times, is served at almost any occasion; from casual brunches to formal gatherings. The stemware it comes in does not necessarily have to be expensive, but rather, should reflect your taste and personality. Champagne stemware, as observed, should be durable, of good quality and if possible, make a great conversation piece.Just don’t drink straight from the bottle.
If you do decide to splurge on expensive stemware, store them with the most exquisite care. There are various storage wares, from vinyl to cotton to wood available to keep your valuables in pristine condition. Do not over-clean them; you might risk leaving a film of cleaning detergent. Always give your glasses a light rinse before use to remove dust and let them dry naturally.

Well, your immune system can decline when pregnant, so it is possible to be more susceptible to the cold or flu. I wouldn’t take it as a definite sign. Also, some pregnant women get stuffy noses. I got that and still have it. Ugh… Take a test! Or wait until your late and then take the test for more definite results. Good luck!

HOW TO MAKE YOUR BODY IMMUNE TO THE SWINE FLU VIRUS
As the number of swine flu deaths swell to an alarming 1,800 worldwide, and the World Health Organization predicts an “explosion” of swine flu cases in the coming months and declares a “public health emergency of international concern,” a pandemic appears to be not only possible but inevitable. The last pandemic — the Hong Kong flu of 1968 — killed about 1 million people. (Source: Associated Press August 21, 2009)
The outbreak of swine flu virus last spring was only a preview of the frightening events to come. The full onslaught of swine flu in the United States will make itself painfully known during the upcoming flu season, starting fairly early in September. It will most likely infect 30-40% of the U.S. population, or about 100 million people, according to flu expert Ira Longini, from the University of Washington’s School of Public Health. (Source: ABC News and msnbc.com)
Initial supplies of the swine flu vaccine, which will be available sometime between mid-September to late October 2009, are expected to be very limited — barely enough to inoculate the 160 million people who are at high risk of becoming infected. An even bigger concern is whether the fast-tracked vaccine is safe and effective — since it’s being rushed to market without the appropriate testing and safety evaluations.
It is a growing suspicion in the general population and among certain members of the medical community, including Dr. Joseph Mercola, the publisher of a popular self-titled natural health newsletter, that being exposed to this new swine flu vaccine might prove to be more dangerous than the swine flu itself.
Madison Cavanaugh, author of “The Secret to Healing Virtually All Diseases” insists, however, that the fear is incorrectly placed on the swine influenza virus itself. “Microbes, germs, harmful bacteria and viruses, such as the swine influenza virus, do not cause disease in and of themselves,” Cavanaugh states. “They do seek their natural habitat — such as an oxygen-deficient body — rather than being the cause of the disease. It’s no different from the way mosquitoes seek out stagnant water, but do not cause the pool to become stagnant.”
Cavanaugh’s assertion is consistent with the findings of Dr. Rudolf Virchow (1821 - 1902), also called the “Father of Pathology.” It is also supported by Louis Pasteur, the notable 19th century French chemist and microbiologist best known for his remarkable breakthroughs in the causes and prevention of disease, who recanted his germ theory of disease at his deathbed, stating, “The microbe is nothing. The terrain is everything.” The terrain of which he spoke refers to an oxygenated environment in the human body, which makes for a strong immune system. A weakened or suppressed state of the immune system only occurs when the human body lacks oxygen, thereby allowing viruses, such as the swine influenza virus, to breed.
It therefore stands to reason that the swine influenza virus does not cause disease, but rather seeks out an environment where it can thrive best — and that is in oxygen-deprived bodies. “A sufficiently oxygenated body is uninhabitable by disease,” Cavanaugh states, and viruses can neither survive nor thrive in it. Therefore, the best defense against microbes, germs, harmful bacteria and viruses, such as the swine flu virus, is to keep the body oxygenated.
Cavanaugh’s book, http://januszek13.omc888.hop.clickbank.net , discusses the therapeutic use of the only natural substance which stimulates the movement of oxygen atoms from the bloodstream to the cells to a dramatically greater degree than is usually reached by other means. This action creates an oxygenated environment that enables the body to cure itself of virtually all diseases ranging from influenza to cancer, AIDS, heart disease, asthma, diabetes and arthritis. The natural oxygenating substance which is the core subject of the book has a long history of therapeutic use dating back 170 years ago when it was used to reverse a wide variety of illnesses — from minor ones like colds and flu to serious ones like cholera and malaria. It has even been used to help stop the Spanish Flu of 1918.
Over the past 70 years, this safe, inexpensive and powerful healing modality has been administered by an estimated 15,000 European doctors, naturopaths and homeopaths to more than 10 million patients to successfully treat practically every known disease. The natural remedy can be self-administered at home in less than a minute, and costs only 1-1/2 cents a day to use. For more information, visit http://januszek13.omc888.hop.clickbank.net

Last week we talked about China’s stealth abandonment of the dollar, and the quiet strategic moves being employed against the United States. We also mentioned “Go,” an ancient game played on a 19×19 board with black and white stones.
In that regard, Taipan Daily reader LBT writes,
Dear Justice:
Superb, as I generally say when writing to you.
I have a question for you: have you ever played “go,” as we call it, or seen it played?
On the surface Go/Wei Chi is a child’s game that can be explained in a couple of minutes. Once you understand how to construct a formation with two eyes that cannot be captured you know enough to dive right in and play.
Beginners almost always scrunch themselves up in a corner and waste enormous points (which are given for territory – empty points – which the other player does not wish to contest OR for men actually captured, usually a far lesser number.) Those of us who’ve been around the board a time or two get aggressive with our outposts on the other side of the board early and fight such small battles as look profitable to us…
Beginners sit there delicately filling in valuable real estate in their attempts to ensure safety, while good players know to spread around counters so that they can guide a small battle for territory over to an area they have staked out in advance.
The real point here is that this can be a very subtle game and the most important thing to look for is patterns. I’m a pretty good player, and I relax my eyes deliberately from time to time and let the board go out of focus. In a sense it is the “forest vs. the trees” thing (usually useless) where what you have to see is that there is an ornamental garden if you have the wit to see it. You cannot concentrate all of the time on individual points or you miss big opportunities.
I suspect that the Chinese are way, way ahead of us in thinking out all of the possibilities and ramifications, and that they will not attack the dollar “for real” until they expect to come out well ahead.
LBT
To answer your question LBT, I have seen the game played but not explored it personally (yet). So many riches in life yet to sample…
You make a great point, too, about the value of relaxing one’s eyes and not getting caught up in the small things. More to say on that, particularly as it relates to trading, in a future Taipan Daily.
China Ups the Ante
In regards to the “great game” that revolves around global currency markets, China unveiled a surprise not-so-subtle move on Friday.
Hu Xiaolian, head of the State Administration of Foreign Exchange, or SAFE, revealed to the world that China holds 76% more gold reserves than previously disclosed. As it turns out, China is sitting on closer to 1,054 tons than 600 tons. This is still a drop in the bucket compared to some $2 trillion worth of total reserves, but the needle is ticking in the right direction.
As I wrote to Safe Haven Investor readers on Friday, “the timing of the disclosure is curious,” further adding the following:
Does China want a higher gold price? In the short run, that’s hard to say. Sometimes a big buyer prefers a temporary lower price, which enables them to get better value on their additional buys.
Clearly, though, this move was intended to boost gold (which it succeeded in doing) and spook the dollar a bit more.
It may be that China was worried about all the loose talk of IMF sales having too much of a negative effect on the yellow metal, and so they wanted to say “Hey, guess what. There’s plenty more buying power in the wings here. Don’t forget that…”
In some ways, “surprise” developments like these aren’t all that surprising. We can’t know the timing in advance of when a secretive government agency will make an announcement, of course. But we can (and do) recognize that the US dollar has a terminal long-term prognosis.
Whatever China’s hidden intentions in talking up their buys, prospects for a fresh outbreak of “gold fever” look strong here.
As stocks went on a tear in recent weeks, with the junkiest, lowest quality names leading the pack (particularly in the battered and beleaguered financial sector), gold did not break down, instead holding ground at 200-day moving average support.
Also note that GLD – which is big enough now to perhaps be an even more important barometer than gold futures contracts – managed to recently retake the levels above its 50-day EMA, and that all three key moving average levels (the 200, the 100 and the 50) have banded together as support here.
India Lends a Hand
We can further note that key negative factors for gold are easing a bit.
A few weeks ago, in a piece title “What’s Driving Gold and Gold Stocks (Part One),” we said the following in these pages:
India, the “world’s largest gold buyer by a wide margin,” has even stopped importing “for the first time in 10 years,” the Financial Times reports. In February and March India saw zero gold imports, while January imports came in light. Vietnam and Thailand, normally reliable buyers of gold, have also been selling. Stepped-up scrap sales have even put Asia scrap sales at a discount to the standard London quote.
As the seasons change – and festival season picks up – India is returning to its old habits. After virtually “zero” gold imports in February and March, provisional statistics from the Bombay Bullion Association suggest India has imported as much as 30 tons of gold and 60 tons of silver for the month of April thus far.
Spec Rally Running on Fumes?
Another factor weighing in gold’s favor is the real possibility that this speculative rally in “junk” stocks is running on fumes – and that the whole thing could end in tears.
While it’s good to see a number of quality names lifted higher by positive market sentiment, it’s distressing to see so many turkeys flying high too – a sign that the windstorm probably won’t last. What’s more, we are now seeing a rapid unloading of insider shares according to Bloomberg:
Executives and insiders at U.S. companies are taking advantage of the steepest stock market gains since 1938 to unload shares at the fastest pace since the start of the bear market…
While the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index climbed 28 percent from a 12-year low on March 9, CEOs, directors and senior officers at U.S. companies sold $353 million of equities this month, or 8.3 times more than they bought, data compiled by Washington Service, a Bethesda, Maryland-based research firm, show.
Not exactly a shining vote of confidence, that. To the degree that this rally has been fueled by a combination of short squeeze, bogus bank earnings and balance sheet hocus-pocus, the risk of a big downside whoosh is heightened – which further improves the outlook for gold.
And Last but Not Least, Swine Flu
And then, of course, we have the global outbreak of swine flu. If you’ve been scanning the headlines, this is pretty scary stuff.
Here is a list of countries either dealing with confirmed cases of swine flu, testing potential cases, or setting up active quarantine measures thus far: Australia, New Zealand, Israel, France, Spain, the United States (at least 11 confirmed cases), Canada (six cases), of course Mexico (the epicenter), Singapore, Japan, Thailand, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, China and Russia. I’ve probably missed a few.
“It’s a bit movie-like, it doesn’t feel real,” an unnamed New Zealand student said, in reference to the quarantine process after getting sick in Mexico.
Let’s just hope it doesn’t get even more “movie-like.” Outbreak and Twelve Monkeys come to mind…
Putting Hollywood aside, it’s too early to panic – but it isn’t too early to start thinking about consequences. We are already getting word that this new swine flu is a sort of hybrid not really seen before. And we know an event like this is potentially far more serious in economic terms than, say, an isolated terrorist attack, because of the degree of global “shutdown” that can occur.
Taking a grimly opportunistic view of things, the threat of escalation on the swine flu front bolsters the gold case in two areas. First as a form of “crisis insurance” – a place to hide when things start looking ugly again – and a second as a doubly renewed form of “printing press insurance,” given the fact that global slowdown brought about by swine flu might give the powers that be even more excuse to pump trillions of paper dollars into the system.
Got gold?

Intermediate Language Learning - Group Study, Evaluation, Learning Pace, Practice
After you’ve established a basic vocabulary in the language you’re studying and feel confident enough that you can pass on to some more complex jobs, it’s time to put what you know to practice. The following tips and tricks are meant for people who have already achieved a basic level of understanding in a foreign language and want to improve areas such as speaking, writing, vocabulary improvement and so forth.
Study with a Friend or Form a Study Group
If you’re studying the new foreign language in class, it will be easy for you to grab a classmate and start studying together. Otherwise, if you’re learning the new language on your own, you could try looking for someone with the same interest or someone that wants to improve that specific language and help each other out. Studying with a friend is an incredibly powerful way of stimulating the learning process and you’ll be able to improve your vocabulary a lot faster. Most importantly, you’ll not just learn the words, or just understand the language you’re studying, as soon enough you’ll be able to handle conversations with your study-buddy, which will be far more helpful in allowing you to reach fluency in that language.
Evaluate Your Strengths and Weaknesses
Each person has his strengths and weaknesses when it comes to learning a foreign language. Some may be better at memorizing words, others will understand grammar rules faster, or get a good grip on pronunciation with ease. To the same extent, one person might have troubles with any of the above mentioned areas. But language lessons and course books don’t care about this. They have straight on, step-by-step requirements that you need to follow, however you should adapt your own strengths and weaknesses to this learning process.
For example, if you’re having problems with the grammar and you can’t really get a correct sentence without checking the book, but the course has already passed on to, say, vocabulary, do you continue? Of course not, you should make sure you have covered everything up before moving on, or you might end up with serious holes in your learning that can prove important later on.
However, if you find yourself flying through a chapter and you’ve already got a good grasp on what they’re trying to explain, but the course goes on and on for 20 more pages about the same thing, you should skip them. It’s all about making your language lessons efficient and evaluating your own strengths and weaknesses so that you know what to emphasize on or what to lay low with.
Find Your Own Language Learning Pace
This is sort of complementary to No. 5 since your pace will mostly be determined by your strengths and weaknesses. The most important thing to know is that you should set your own boundaries. Don’t let a course book or a free online language lesson tell you “It’s time to move on to the next chapter”. You’ll have to decide when to move on and you should only do so when you’re fully confident that you got everything right so far. Remember, skipping or not fully understanding a part of your new language is like taking a card out of the base of your card castle. Sure, there’s a chance it will still hold based on the other cards, but you’ll be left with quite a shaky castle..
Practice Consistently and Efficiently
One thing I don’t like about course books is that they give you set time limits for studying. “Study 1 hour each day for 2 months” and the likes. I’d say you will be better off simply studying consistently, as much as you feel comfortable with, otherwise it won’t be efficient. If you’re going to go study for 1 hour simply because you’ll “ruin the program your course book gave you” then that right there is very inefficient. If that’s your only motivation, you’ll probably be very unfocused, thus inefficient when studying.
You should always study when you’re in the mood to do so and not forced by any other factors. Otherwise you’ll lose a lot of time mindlessly reading stuff in your new language, but not assimilating anything. In addition, frustration and nuisance will build up and when that happens, many people simply quit. If you study consistently and efficiently and you’ll actually see some results, that will give you enough motivation to study the next day and the next and so forth. One last note regarding language learning efficiency: follow tip number 3 and eat the information with a small spoon. You don’t want to overwhelm your brain with new information.

Influenza, Bird Flu and Homeopathy – Can it Provide a Different Perspective?
Influenza, Bird Flu and homeopathy - can it provide a different perspective?
Off course putting 160000 turkeys in a shed is a healthy, pleasant experience for them particularly as we provide all their medication in their food - and anyone who thinks differently is obviously not scientifically trained - it must be the wild birds causing the epidemic as they come into all sorts of unnatural substances like fresh air and sunlight! And we should all dip into our pockets and reimburse Bernard for his terrible loss of profits and his altruistic willingness to kill all his pet birds (sorry cull - I think it means they send them to a farm for a holiday!).
If you agree with all of the above do not bother to read on but just send donations to the ‘Seroxat is good for young people’ fund. However if you are concerned we might be being told a tiny white lie then read on.
Why do we suffer from Influenza and cold viruses?
Without breathable air, we cannot survive for more than a few minutes. Air enters through the nose and mouth, throat and bronchials and into the lungs. The upper respiratory system warms, humidifies and to some extent purifies the air entering the body (e.g. by removing dust particles with nasal hairs). This system can be damaged by pollution and invaded by bacteria and viruses, which stimulate the moist membranes to produce extra mucus as protection. This mucus can quickly develop into catarrh. Colds coughs and sinusitis show varying degrees of discharge that can affect the ear, nose and throat in acute situations and these can develop into chronic conditions (especially with suppressive treatment).
Influenza (flu)
Influenza and cold viruses are actually different but people often confuse them as most of the symptoms are similar. There is generally an infection of the lungs and airways, causing a fever, runny nose, sore throat, cough, headache, muscle aches, and a general feeling of illness. There are two types of influenza virus, type A and type B, and many different strains within each type. The illnesses produced by the different types and strains are similar. The strain of influenza virus causing outbreaks is always changing, so every year the influenza virus is a little different from the previous years.
The key difference is that Influenza is caused by a different virus and produces symptoms that are more severe. Also, influenza affects cells much deeper down in the respiratory tract. Influenza virus is spread by inh aling droplets that have been coughed or sneezed out by an infected person or by having direct contact with an infected person’s secretions.
Every year, throughout the world, widespread outbreaks of influenza occur during late autumn or early winter. Influenza occurs in epidemics, in which many people get sick all at once. In each epidemic, usually only one strain of influenza virus is responsible for the disease. Strains are often named after the first location (for example, Hong Kong flu) or animal (for example, swine flu) in which it was found. The current panic is Bird Flu.
Like humans and other species, birds are susceptible to flu. There are many types of bird, or avian, flu. The most contagious strains, which are usually fatal in birds, are H5 and H7. There are nine different types of H5. The nine all take different forms - some are highly pathogenic, while some are pretty harmless. The type currently causing concern is the “highly pathogenic” Asian strain of the H5N1 virus. Scientists have discovered four different subtypes of H5N1, and there could well be more. However, all are deadly to birds, and can cause disease - and death - in humans.
However, it is important to stress that H5N1 is overwhelmingly a disease that affects birds - and not humans. It is true that humans have been infected, but almost all have been poultry workers who have come into intimate contact with birds. H5N1 cannot pass easily from human to human.
Allopaths generally assume that people who have respiratory disorders are suffering from infections which are caused by viruses, bacteria or they may be suffering from external irritants such as dust or fumes that inflame the mucus membranes of the respiratory system. They tend not to take into consideration the patient’s emotional state, diet or levels of toxicity nor look at hereditary influences.
The treatment given is firstly suppressive in nature (using anti biotic, anti virals, anti inflammatory, decongestants) or secondly through surgery (e.g. tonsillectomy) to remove the inflamed part. (Unless you are one the bootiful birds from Norfolk in which case they remove the head - oops - sorry I meant perform a culling operation)
Standard medical Treatment: There is no allopathic treatment for influenza so treatment is based on prevention in the form of the influenza vaccination which contains inactivated (killed) influenza virus or pieces of the virus.
Modern vaccines are designed to protect against three different strains of influenza virus. Different vaccines may be given every year to keep up with changes in the virus. Allopaths try to predict the strain of virus that will attack each year based on the strain of virus that predominated during the previous flu season and the strain causing disease in other parts of the world. They will also use several antiviral drugs to prevent infection with influenza virus. They may prescribe these drugs when a person has had recent exposure to someone with influenza. In addition, these drugs are used during epidemics of influenza to protect unvaccinated people who are at high risk of complications of influenza (older people and people with chronic illnesses).
The current allopathic advice on vaccinations (which is promoted by most governments) ignores the dangers of vaccinations, avoids mentioning any long term side effects and is basically an extremely one sided and distorted approach to the whole debate on prevention. The virus itself changes enough that vaccines are quite ineffective (but extremely profitable for the drug companies).
There is some evidence that the prevention programmes are creating the very problem they are designed to stop - there is obviously an economic incentive for the pharmaceutical companies to promote both panic and therefore pressure on governments. Unfortunately these suppressive acts often merely add to the problems the patient may already have. So is there an alternative?
Migratory wildfowl, notably wild ducks, are natural carriers of the viruses, but are unlikely to actually develop an infection. (There might be a message here - we all come into contact with bacteria and viruses all the time but only a small proportion are susceptible to them as our natural body defences protect us if we are basically healthy.
Thinking the unthinkable - is it completey bonkers to suspect that
a) as virus are found in birds (and us) all the time
b) that they continually mutate
c) stress lowers the immune system which protects us
we could conclude that Bird flu is a product of factory farming rather than an external foreign threat that attacks our luverly cuddly bootiful turkeys?
Can homeopathy provide a different perspective?
Homeopathy is an energetic medicine that comes from a completely different perspective to the so called ’scientific’ medical based one.
From an energetic perspective dysfunction of the lung energy can lead to upper respiratory disorders such as:
· Common Cold/ coughs/ sore throat/ fullness in the chest/ Influenza
· Nose disorders/Rhinitis/ Sinusitis/Nasal Polyps
· Coryza /Catarrh
· Adenoid glands
· Tonsillitis
· Epiglottises
· Laryngitis
· Pharyngitis
· Croup
· Skin disorders (associated with weak lungs)
Homeopaths see all of these during their practice. They are able to distinguish clearly between ‘acute’ cases caused by flu and common colds, through to more chronic symptoms leading all the way up to potential life threatening situations.
The energetic view of disorders of the lungs (Upper & Lower respiratory disorders) is that they manifest on the external surfaces of the body. The symptoms will vary according to the depth to which they descend. From this perspective the causative factors are not organisms (microbes, viruses), but changes in the energetic balance, usually as a result of climatic factors, emotional states and dietary indiscretions, pollutants or hereditary influences etc. Lung disorders are seen as emotionally linked to grief/sadness at one end of the spectrum and courage/righteousness at the other.
(Off course Bernard’s turkeys are all happy little turkeys so none of this applies to them - anyway whoever heard of an animal having feelings - what scientific nonsense - humans are completely and utterly different from animals and birds aren’t we?)
Homeopaths place the emphasis on:
· the climatic factors
· susceptibility from a miasmatic perspective
· toxicity
· Emotional factors.
People with acute upper respiratory tract infections that have their symptoms suppressed by drug therapy or who have such conditions as part of their general state of health (e.g. chronic bronchitis from smoking) may develop lower respiratory disorders. In practice you will see many people who have developed lower respiratory tract disease following suppressive treatment of upper respiratory tract disease. If the patient’s constitutional energy is strong, the problem is held in the superficial levels of the upper respiratory tract, the bowels or the skin and should not descend into the lower respiratory system.
