5 Energy Saving Tips For Renters

If you rent your home or live in an apartment, you may feel that there’s not a lot you can do to keep your energy costs under control. Apartment buildings are notorious for being very inefficient. Since the building owner doesn’t pay the energy bills, they don’t have any incentive, except where building codes require it, to install energy saving equipment. As a renter, you generally have no incentive to install energy saving equipment in your home or apartment. There are, however, some exceptions to this, and you can always optimize the equipment that you’re stuck with so that it runs as efficiently as possible. Let’s take a look at some of the ways that you can save money on your energy costs as a renter.

Programmable Thermostat

Programmable thermostats are an excellent way to slash 10-15% off of your heating and cooling bills. They generally cost between $50 and $100 and will come with installation instructions. If you’re not comfortable doing the installation yourself, have a competent friend or an electrician do it for you. Remember to save the old thermostat. You will need to reinstall it when you move out. Once you’ve installed the new thermostat, program it to match your daily routine. At times when you’re not at home, the thermostat can adjust the temperature up in the summer, or down in winter. While you’re at it, try changing you typical settings. Perhaps you can be just as comfortable with the AC set to 78 degrees as 72 degrees. You can save even more money this way.

Lighting

Lighting is an area where you have almost complete control over your energy use. Besides conserving energy by turning off unneeded lights, you can install energy efficient compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs) in the lamps and fixtures in your home. CFLs use about 25% of the energy that incandescent bulbs use. They also produce a lot less heat, so during the summer cooling season they will help keep you living space at a more comfortable temperature, without the need to more air conditioning.

Low flow showerhead

Low flow showerheads are an inexpensive way to save money on your water and water heating bills. You can probably find one for $15 or less at your local home improvement store. They take minutes to install. Don’t forget to put the old showerhead in a safe place (keep it with that old thermostat you replaced) so that you can reinstall it when you move out.

Adjust your Water heater

If you have access to your water heater, take a look at its temperature setting. If it is set above 120 degrees you should turn it down. Heating the water any higher just wastes energy and increases the risk of scalding burns. Most water heaters have a “vacation” setting. Use this feature when you’re away from home for more than a few days. Leave yourself a reminder to turn the heat back up when you get home.

Maintain Your Furnace and Air Conditioner

You don’t have any control over what make and model of air conditioner or furnace you have in your apartment. You can make a safe bet that they are probably old and inefficient. Heating and cooling costs are the single biggest part of your energy bill so even little steps that you take can save you money. If you have access to your furnace and air conditioner, take the time and effort to maintain these pieces of equipment. Change your furnace filter every few months during the heating season. Regular inspections will give you a sense for how often the filter needs changing. Do the same for your air conditioner. If you are renting a home and your AC unit is exposed to direct sunlight, make a shade for it. Your AC condenser will run more efficiently at lower temperatures.

Satellite Images and GIS Aid in Disease Mapping and Surveillance

Also known as Landscape Epidemiology, which involves the identification of geographical areas where disease is transmitted. By knowing the vegetation and geologic conditions necessary for the maintenance of specific pathogens in nature, one can use the landscape to identify the spatial and temporal distribution of disease risk. Key environmental elements, including elevation, temperature, rainfall, and humidity, influence the presence, development, activity, and longevity of pathogens, vectors, zoonotic reservoirs of infection, and their interactions with humans.

To view original story go here http://news.satimagingcorp.com/2009/10/satellite_images_and_gis_aid_in_disease_mapping_and_surveillance.html

Vegetation type and distribution are also influenced by the environmental variables mentioned above, and can be expressed as landscape elements that can be sensed remotely and whose relationships can be modeled spatially. For the past 29 years, satellite sensors have proved to be valuable tools for describing the earth’s landscape. Since the launch of Landsat 7 and ASTER, NASA has initiated programs to integrate these technologies into the areas of forestry, agriculture, geology,  and public health.

Satellite images can greatly enhance a GIS mapping project. Imagery is a powerful visual aid and serves as a source of derivative information such as planimetrics and classification schemes to derive such information as land cover and change detection or vegetation classification.

The use of GIS has many implications for landscape epidemiology because it provides users the ability to store, integrate, query, display, and analyze data from the molecular level to that of satellite resolution through their shared spatial components. Field observations and vector data retrieved on environmental conditions, including vegetation, water (hydrology), and topography, can be combined in a GIS mapping environment to direct interpretation of remote sensed data and facilitate characterization of the landscape in terms of vector and pathogen prevalence.

The associations between disease risk variables (e.g., vector, pathogen, and reservoir host abundance and distribution) and environmental variables can be quantified using the spatial analysis capabilities of the GIS. Landscape pattern analysis, combined with statistical analysis, allows us to define landscape predictors of disease risk that can be applied in larger regions where field data are unavailable. This makes remote sensing and GIS a powerful set of tools for disease surveillance, predicting potential disease outbreaks, and targeting intervention programs.

The analysis and mapping of data using GIS include:

* The spread of diseases over time
* Spatial patterns of outbreaks
* Population groups at risk
* Availability and access to health care
* Program intervention planning and assessment

Satellite Imaging Corporation

Satellite Imaging Corporation combines orthorectified satellite images and digital aerial photography mosaics with extracted vector and client-supplied attribute data to create single, data-rich images for GIS and other mapping applications to achieve a multi-layered result for many types of analysis.

The company specializes in mono and stereo satellite imaging technology producing seamless orthorectified Satellite Imaging mosaics DEM’s and 3D terrain models for many industries using GIS applications including, flight simulations, terrain modeling, engineering and construction using high and medium resolution mono and stereo satellite image data from satellite sensors such as GeoEye-1, Worldview-1, QuickBird, IKONOS, Landsat 7 and ASTER.

Practice Fluency

How To Gain Fluency In Another Language Using The Internet

How to Gain Fluency in another Language Using the Internet

In today’s increasingly interconnected world, knowledge of more than one language is quickly becoming a necessary and crucial skill for the workplace. Like having a post-secondary qualification, language skills can set you above the competition, and even send you abroad. The educational system has long recognized the importance of bilingualism by including mandatory foreign language modules in primary curriculum. While such encouragement must be commended for providing students with an introduction to, and basic knowledge of, a second language, it does not provide them with sufficient opportunity to become fluent.

To gain fluency in another language, many people will tell you the only solution is to travel to a foreign country and immerse yourself completely. This advice may be greatly appealing for those who dream of relocating abroad (and frankly, who doesn’t during the winter season?). But for the majority of people, this solution is both inconvenient and costly.

Thankfully, technology has brought us new and exciting options for communicating in another language. This article will highlight just a few examples for how the internet can help students and parents learn a new language online.

To expand your vocabulary, try reading free articles and eventually books in another language. To begin with, reading may be a slow and frustrating process as you will have to stop to look-up the meaning for many unfamiliar words. Before you begin, find an online dictionary that will offer you quick translations.

Hearing a language is key to learning how to speak it. In Mandarin, for example, meaning is dependent on tone and emphasis. Popular music downloading sites currently offer free podcasts and radio programs that you can download in your chosen languages and take with you wherever you go.

Finally, and most importantly, one must actually practice speaking the language. Traditionally, the weakness of online learning has been the lack of human interaction. Fluency is often measured by ones level of conversation and, until recently, the internet has provided no means to either converse or be critiqued. Today, those serious about transitioning from having a basic knowledge to becoming fluent ought to consider a new way of learning language: online coaching. For a reasonable fee, it is now possible to hire your own personal coach who will improve your skill by engaging you in conversation. Hiring a coach has the benefit of allowing you to set your own goals and choose the subject matter. Moreover, a coach will be able to correct your pronunciation, offer you feedback, and be available when it is most convenient for you.

Gas Oven Temperature Fluctuates

gas oven temperature fluctuates

How to Maintain your Perfect Weight & Health

Eat variety of foods to minimize repeated exposure to food toxins, sprays, etc. All foods are handled differently in different parts of the country. (See Natural Foods List Below)

If you eat conventional fruits and vegetables, be extra cautious on what you put into your body, repeatedly. Conventional foods contain pesticides and other chemicals. It is always best to eat organic foods which are grown naturally without any chemicals.

Eat organic foods if you can. Certain foods are laced with dangerous pesticides. Wash all fresh foods thoroughly especially melons, as there have been several cases of salmonella poisoning found from cutting into the melons before washing them. Grow your own if possible.

When selecting organic foods at your local grocery store look for the “organic” label on each produce or the organic section. Conventional produce can be larger and look better than organic produce. Organic foods are somewhat costly, however, it is better to pay now than later.

Eat more fiber to speed dangerous toxins through the intestinal tract and to bind and neutralize them before they can do any harm. Fiber should be part of every meal. It is found in whole grains, beans, legumes, vegetables, and fruits. Processed foods lack fiber, be sure and add fresh food to every meal. Fiber also cuts down on food reactions and blood sugar fluctuations, in addition to preventing constipation.

Oatmeal is an excellent source of fiber. Eat oatmeal in the morning with a piece of fruit, such as, banana, mango, peach, pineapple. Here is a list of fiber foods:

Lentils

Lima beans

Navy beans

Pinto beans

Red Kidney

Soy beans

Fava Beans

Adzuki beans

Great Northern beans

Chick Peas

Apples

Apricots

Grapefruit

Peaches

Prunes

Avocado

Cabbage

Cauliflower

Kale

Reduce fat consumption since toxins are concentrated in the fat of an animal and saturated fats used in commercial cooking. These products are potentially dangerous toxins.

Avoid old nuts, grains and seeds that are not nitrogen sealed or kept under refrigeration. Aflatoxin, a mold that grows on these foods has been linked to cancer.

Refrigerate all fresh foods or cooked foods quickly so bacteria cannot form.

Avoid highly processed foods like ketchup, beef jerky, hot dogs and tomato based sauces, these have concentrated toxins.

Processed foods is the major cause of obesity and many other health issues due to the chemicals that they may contain. Replace these foods with natural food substitutes. (See List Below)

Avoid burned foods because they contain carcinogens that are cancer causing substances.

Buy only frozen fish, “fresh fish” in a grocer’s case may have been around many days. Do not eat raw fish.

Do not consume liver. Toxins from the body of the animal are left in the tissues of the liver after it has cleaned them out of the blood supply. Avoid all organ meats.

Avoid foreign-made dinnerware, glassware, etc. It could contain leaded glasses and glazes that may leach into our food. Also, avoid antique crystal dishes and other dinnerware made before the law was passed in the States against the use of lead in dinnerware.

Do not use plastic wrap in microwave ovens, plastic containers, etc. Use only glass for food storage. Plastic leaches petro chemicals into food.

Microwaves have heat susceptors that are a source of hazardous chemicals, and materials around them also break down in the intense heat creating more toxins that can get into the food. Use a paper towel or paper plate over the food or the specially designed lids that come with microwave cooking dishes. Put a little water on the dish and arrange the food to be of uniform density, then cover and cook. The cover will hold in the steam killing any bacteria.

When heating leftovers, heat them up on medium-high or high heat. This will be hot enough to kill bacteria. Warming them only to eating temperatures is not hot enough.

To be on the safe side, do not use a microwave at all and go back to traditional cooking.

Fat and spicy foods put stress on the gall bladder and the liver, resulting in heartburn and indigestion, so avoid fried food, gravies, and dairy products.

Overeating overloads the stomach, pressure forces acid back up into the esophagus, leading to heartburn, gas, and bloating. The end result is obesity.

When eating breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks they are to be considered as a sacred moment. Always sit down in a comfortable place where you are able to focus on your food only. For every mouthful of food, chew slowly until food has broken down into small pieces. As you chew saliva is mixed throughout the food which allows the enzymes to digest food properly. When food is chewed thoroughly, the stomach becomes full faster. Once the stomach is full, stop eating. This is where people start to overeat because they crave the flavor more than satisfying the hunger.

Eat All Natural Foods. Additives aren’t good for you, avoid them.

Detoxification For Health

Detoxification is something our bodies do on a daily basis. It is the process of eliminating toxins through the five eliminatory channels:

Liver

Colon

Lungs

Kidneys

Lymph

Skin

In the world we live in today, with polluted water, air and food, our bodies regularly get overloaded with substances that do not support our body – toxins! Our bodies become overloaded and are over-burdened with eliminating toxins. So many undesirable substances stay our bodies.

Surrounding these substances with mucous and fat is one way our system tries to shield us from these invading substances. a good portion is stored in our fat deposits!

A detoxification program is a good way of assisting our body to eliminate and neutralize these harmful toxins.

Let us look at the 5 organs for detoxification:

Liver

The liver is the largest internal organ in the body and plays a crucial role in maintaining normal metabolism and detoxifying the body.

Colon

Disease begins in the colon. The colon is responsible for both carrying wastes out of the body and nourishing the body. Nutrients are absorbed in the colon. So if your body is storing toxins and excess mucous they will be stuck to the intestinal walls of the colon. Making it very hard for your body to absorb the required nutrients and eliminate the wastes traveling through the colon.

Lungs

Your lungs are responsible for helping your body get the required oxygen it needs by processing the air we breathe. The lungs are one of the first organs to intake toxins. A cold is usually a sign that your body is trying to rid itself of toxins and waste matter that has built up to the point of overwhelming your immune system.

Kidneys

The kidneys play an important role as a filter for the body as well. Water is vital to helping the kidneys do their job. The average person eliminates approximately 5 pints of water a day. Drinking adequate water is essential.

Lymph

The lymphatic system carries a clear fluid which contains excess proteins, wastes, and other elements. This fluid called lymph surrounds the cells of our body to bring them nourishment and carry wastes out of the body.

Unlike the blood, the lymph does not have the heart to pump it through the body. It must rely on the movement of the body and stimulation.

Skin

As mentioned earlier, the skin is the largest organ of the body.

Benefits of Detoxification

There are several benefits of detoxification:

o End your cravings for habit-forming substances such as sugar, caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, and drugs.

1. Increase your energy by removing toxins that wear you down.

2. Shrink your stomach to its normal size, making it easier to control the quantity of food eaten.

3. Boost your mental clarity by flushing away chemicals, food additives and preservatives.

4. Break your bad eating habits to achieve or maintain your desired weight.

5. Lose weight. A detox program is the first step to safe and effective weight loss.

6. Cleanse your digestive tract of accumulated waste and bacteria.

7. Purify all your major organs allowing you to function at your best.

8. Reduce cellulite, allergies, acne and obesity safely and naturally.

What is a good Detox program?

A Good Detoxification program should be designed to help the body cleanse itself of toxins, mucus, and waste materials in the intestinal tract and liver, kidneys, and blood, thus helping your body function better. This not only restores new energy to your vital organs, but to the entire body as well.

Buy Flute Online

February 24th, 2009

buy flute online

i need a new flute?

im going to 10th grade this year and i need a new flute before the year starts. i want to buy one online. where do i go to buy one?

Hi Cherri,

New flute time? That is great!! You are going to enjoy playing on a new flute… and might I advise either the intermediate level or the advanced level flute for your continued growth and development.

I suggest you look at as many places online as you can. Fluteworld has been suggested. I would suggest you check with Woodwind & Brasswind, as well. They are an online or catalog sales for all instruments and instrument accessories. I have done business with them for many, many years. What I like about this company is that they can send a couple of instruments out to your house for you to play test and make a choice. You send the one you don’t like back.

My advice for an instrument would be…. the Yamaha 300 or 400 series. Very nice flutes. Very consistent. Very popular with band directors, private teachers and students who already play them. They have a nice tone quality, stay in adjustment and are very easy for repairman to work on. The big + that I have with Yamaha flutes is that they are free blowing and projective… which is needed in competition situations…. you really want to stand out from your competition. I would stick with the 300 or 400 series for value… the 500 and 600 series are usually too expensive for practically the same things you are getting on the 300 and 400 series.

The other flute that I really like to get students into is the Jupiter DiMedici 1011. I just love this flute for how it plays, how it sounds, the mechanism…. everything. There are other Jupiters… but they just are not in the same class with this superior advanced model instrument.

Anyway… that is what I can suggest. Take note off all the suggestions you are getting and do research all of the online sites to buy instruments from. Prices will vary. One thing you can do with Woodwind & Brasswind is find their 1-800 number on their web site. Call and request a catalog be sent to you (only the woodwind catalog dealing with flutes and other woodwind instruments). This way you can look over all of the flutes they sell and see pictures and prices of each.

Hope that helps…and congrats on getting a brand new flute.

Pipes of Pan at Jajouka

Brian Jones’s trip to Morocco in 1968 included a trip to the mountain village of Jajouka guided by painter Brion Gysin. What he recorded there introduced the world at large to the Master Musicians of Jajouka, initially released in 1971. Their music is based on ritual, but is still playful. The horns, chanting, and drums of this field recording are completely trancelike. It’s a shame that phasing a…

Constipation Fluid Retention

Magic Potion of Weight Loss

Do you know a substance that we take for granted could be your magic potion for wieght loss. This article reviews the important benefits of a simple substance..water. Answer these questions. Do you you have these 6 signs of dehydration? How this impact on your health and why it means weight gain and lack of energy? Learn how much is enough. Learn the lasting health benefitsof proper hydration.

Proper Hydration

Water is an essential and the major component of all living matter, and the largest single component of our bodies. Water is the one substance (other than oxygen) that we must absolutely have if we are to survive.

An adult can live several weeks without food, but no more than about 10 days without water

Do you have these signs of dehydration?

1.   Dry, pasty feeling in your mouth, or dry lips.

2.   Dark-coloured, pungent urine.

3.   Dry skin.

4.   Hard stool, constipation or other elimination problems.

5.   Low energy and weakness.

6.   Water retention.

The most obvious way to hydrate is through drink water (filtered if possible), pure/nothing added save a dash of lemon juice. Not tea/coffee/soft drink/alcohol which are all in fact dehydrating.

 How much is enough? 1

The a person  of around 50 kilo (130 lb) who is not hot/physically active/in a drying environment  needs around 2 litres or 8 glasses of water per day. Increasing up to 50% more if you’re working hard outdoors are sick etc. Your body weight determines your hydration requirements. How far are you from your target of a minimum of 2 litres of water per day…every day?

Although most of us take it for granted, water may be the only true “magic potion” for permanent weight loss

Water naturally suppresses the appetite and helps the body metabolize stored fat. Studies have shown that a decrease in water intake will cause fat deposits to increase, while an increase in water intake can actually reduce fat deposits.

Drinking enough water is the best treatment for fluid retention. When the body gets less water, it perceives this as a threat to survival and begins to hold on to every drop. Water is stored in extracellular spaces (outside the cells). This shows up as swollen feet, legs, and hands.

The overweight person needs more water than the thin one. Larger people have larger metabolic loads. Since we know that water is the key to fat metabolism, it follows that the overweight person needs more water.

Water helps to maintain proper muscle tone by giving muscles their natural ability to contract and by preventing dehydration. It also helps to prevent the sagging skin that usually follows weight loss. Shrinking cells are buoyed by water, which plumps the skin and leaves it clear, healthy, and resilient.

Water helps rid the body of waste. During weight loss, the body has a lot more waste to get rid of – all the metabolized fat must be shed. Again, adequate water helps flush out the waste.

Water can help relieve constipation. When the body gets too little water, it siphons what it needs from internal sources. The colon is one primary source. Result? Constipation. But when a person drinks enough water, normal bowel function usually returns.

Get a 2 litre water bottle and take it with you everywhere at work/play and sip it throughout the day.

That’s today’s challenge, seems like such a simple one, it’s free (unless you buy bottled water) and you can do it almost anywhere. It is also essential if you want to feel energized, focused, loose excess kilos, and rid the body of toxic waste.

See if you can get your water consumption to or above the minimum 2 litres per day in the next week, and make it a normal part of your day

You will notice you pee more, think of it as peeing your way to health…it’s a good thing! What’s more it will settle in a few days if you persist.

1 Please consult a physician before making any changes to your dietary intake if you have any health conditions that prevent you from drinking or handling an increased volume of liquids (e.g., kidney failure, urinary tract infection, prostate problems).
