Treating Vaginal Odor During Pregnancy

While vaginal discharge in pregnancy is quite common, many women also experience the irritation, odor, or increased discharge that is caused by an actual infection. Most vaginal infections do not hurt the baby, but they can make mothers-to-be very uncomfortable.

How can I tell if I have a vaginal infection?
It’s normal to have more discharge while you’re pregnant than before you conceived. What’s key is that this type of discharge is usually clear or white and odorless. You should not have itching or significant vulvar irritation. The presence of yellow or green discharge plus bad odor, external or internal irritation, or itching can all indicate vaginitis. Your practitioner can evaluate vaginal secretions if the cause of the infection is unclear.

Yeast infections in pregnancy

It’s very common to get a yeast infection while pregnant simply because of the higher levels of pregnancy hormones present. The mild immune suppression that comes with carrying a baby may also contribute to its development. You may possibly notice an boost in thick white discharge, redness or irritation in the outer vaginal lips, and occasionally severe itching.

Bacterial vaginosis

Bacterial vaginosis, commonly called BV, is an imbalance of the bacteria of the vagina, with more of the bad bacteria present than the good lactobacilli. This usually leads to a fishy odor that may be most noticeable after intercourse. Many women have no symptoms of BV, but their practitioner may diagnose it at the time of a vaginal examination by checking the pH of the vaginal secretions or by looking at the discharge under the microscope.

Up until just a few years ago, OB practitioners were fairly relaxed about BV and only treated it if the woman had symptoms. But recent research has shown that BV increases the chances of premature birth and premature rupture on the membranes, so the current practice is to treat it if diagnosed and to specifically test for it if a woman is already at large risk of having a premature birth.

Yeast infections in pregnancy don’t normally travel up into the uterus or harm the baby in any way, and they only require treatment if the mother’s symptoms are bothersome. In general, intra-vaginal treatments (either over-the-counter or prescription) are preferable to oral treatment with fluconazole (Diflucan), since they have been in use for longer without apparent issues and due to the fact less with the medication is absorbed into the bloodstream. A single dose of fluconazole doesn’t appear to expose the baby to risk, although high continuous doses may cause birth defects.

How To Never Cheat On Your Diet For Kidney Failure

As a nurse for many years now, a lot of people complain to me that their diet for kidney failure is so hard to follow. They tell me that this type of diet has too many restrictions and that it is so rigid and unforgiving.

My reply to the above statement is that maybe you haven’t considered other possibilities to your diet? Or maybe you haven’t researched enough to realize that this diet is in fact easy to follow.

Before I start talking about the diet for kidney failure, I will first talk a little about the kidney. The kidneys play key roles in body function, not only by filtering the blood and getting rid of waste products, but also by balancing levels of electrolytes in the body, controlling blood pressure, and stimulating the production of red blood cells.

Now, renal failure results when the kidneys cannot remove the body’s metabolic wastes or perform their regulatory functions. The substances normally eliminated in the urine accumulate in the body fluids as a result of impaired renal excretion, leading to a disruption in endocrine and metabolic functions as well as fluid, electrolyte and acid-base disturbances.

Renal failure is a systemic disease and is final common pathway of many different kidney and urinary tract diseases. Each year, the number of deaths from irreversible renal failure increases.
Kidney disease diet is an important consideration for those with impaired kidney function. Consultation with a dietician may be helpful to understand what foods may or may not be appropriate. Various kidney disease recipe are available in the market right now.

Since the kidneys cannot easily remove excess water, salt, or potassium, they may need to be consumed in limited quantities. Foods high in potassium include bananas, apricots, and salt substitutes.
Phosphorus is a forgotten chemical that is associated with calcium metabolism and may be elevated in kidney failure. Too much phosphorus can leech calcium from the bones and cause osteoporosis and fractures. Foods with high phosphorus content include milk, cheese, nuts, and cola drinks.

This diet is usually done with other treatments for kidney failure. The two major treatments for kidney failure are dialysis and transplantation. The former has two kinds of procedures—hemodialysis (accessed via IV route) and peritoneal dialysis (done via the abdomen). The latter, on the other hand, involves a more complex pre-operation and post-operation interventions.

The kidney has a remarkable ability to recover from insult. That is with this diet for renal failure, the objective is to repair kidney tissue so that restoration of renal function can take place.

When To Give Babies Fluoride

Your Baby Needs Many Different Food Groups for a Balanced, Healthy Diet

The different food groups your baby needs

Your baby needs many different food groups for a balanced, healthy diet. These food groups are:

• carbohydrates

• proteins

• fats

• vitamins and minerals.

Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are the group that provides essential energy. It gives your baby immediate energy and helps to keep him or her active and healthy. In the first few months of your baby’s life, all your baby’s energy needs will be provided by lactose, a carbohydrate found in breast milk or infant formula.

Once your baby moves onto solids and reduces their dependence on breast milk or formula, their

source of complex carbohydrates will be derived from starches such as pasta, bread, potatoes,

cereals and rice. Fruits such as apples, bananas, and grapes and vegetables such as carrots,

peas and sweet potatoes all contain carbohydrates. If your baby enjoys a variety of these foods he or she will get all the carbohydrates they require for rapid growth and an active day.

Carbohydrates are also present in sugary foods, such as lollies, biscuits, jams, chocolate, soft

drinks and cordials. Beware of these options! They are extremely high in refined sugars, have no

nutritional value, cause tooth decay, can lead to a craving for sugar and possibly obesity. Please

steer clear of all of the above!!

Protein

Protein is the main material that the body needs for growth development and also keeps the body

in a good state of repair. Babies need more protein than adults due to the fast growth of the

basic body tissues such as the brain, muscles, blood and skin, particularly in their first few years. Animal protein is obtained from meat, fish, eggs and dairy products such as cheese and yoghurt. Vegetable protein is obtained from cereals, nuts, lentils, pasta rice and root vegetables.

Fibre

Fibre is another food group your baby needs, as it encourages good digestion and keeps us

regular! Fibre or roughage is found in fruits and vegetables, wholemeal and wholegrain breads

and cereals and nuts.

Fats

Fats are another important group to include in your baby’s diet. Smaller amounts of fat is needed

compare to the other food groups, however, they are an important part of your baby’s diet as

they are a source of essential fatty acids and vitamins. The fat stored by the body will protect your baby from heat loss. There are many different kinds of fats, such as saturated fats,

polyunsaturated fats and monounsaturated fats. Saturated fats come from animals, while

polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats are found in avocados, which is one of the first solid

foods your baby will probably eat.

Vitamins and minerals

Your baby requires many vitamins and minerals for healthy development. In summary, a varied,

healthy diet will provide your baby with all the vitamins and minerals they need.

Minerals such as calcium, essential for healthy bones and teeth, is found in dairy products and

leafy green vegetables. Iron is found in commercially prepared rice cereal, red meat and some green vegetables.

Salt or sodium is found in vegetables, fluoride is provided by our water supply and magnesium is

found in cabbage and potatoes. Phosphorous is found in breast milk and formula, whilst

potassium, essential for maintaining water balance and muscle and nerve activity, is found in

bananas, a great favourite of many babies (and their mums). Your baby requires many vitamins, especially vitamins C and A. Vitamin C is found particularly in citrus fruits, whilst vitamin A is found in yellow, green and orange fruits and vegetables.

Are There Different Eye Exams For Contact Lenses and Eyeglasses?

When acquiring glasses or contacts, one must have an eye exam. Most people do not think about whether there is a difference between the two exams. There are actual distinct differences between an eye exam for eyeglasses and an eye exam for contact lenses.

The following describes the differences with an eye exam for eyeglasses and an exam for contact lenses:

Eye Exam for Eyeglasses

The purpose of an eye exam is to diagnose problems with one’s vision and any diseases of the eye. You will be required to read an eye chart. This includes reading with both eyes than each on their own. The eye doctor will then perform a Retinoscopy. In a darkened exam room, the doctor will provide you with a point to stare at, and then the doctor will shine a light in the eye. How the light bounces off the eye is a determining factor in what the strength of your eyeglass prescription will be. The eye doctor will also perform a Refraction test. A device called a Phoropter is used to perform the test. You will look through a mask device held up to your face and the doctor will show you a series of letters and ask you to state which one is clearer. The doctor will be flipping lenses in the mask to different strengths. This test determines whether one has nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and/or presbyopia. The eye doctor will then perform a slit-lamp exam. This device allows the doctor to assess the structures of the eye. It is used to identify eye infection and eye disease.

Eye Exam for Contact Lenses

A contact lens exam concentrates on only one feature of eye health. The eye doctor will run tests to assess the eye’s cornea surface to make sure the contact lenses will fit properly. You will be asked questions about your lifestyle so the doctor can select the best type of contact lens for your situation. A device called a keratometer measures the surface and curvature of the eye. The doctor will measure this by using an instrument called a keratometer. A keratometer is a type of digital camera that takes pictures of your eye to create mathematical depictions of the curvature of your cornea’s surface. This test determines the correct curve and size for your contact lenses. Corneal topography may also be done to give more details about the surface of the cornea. The health of your cornea may be evaluated using a biomicroscope. You may also have your pupils measured using a pupil card, ruler, or pupillometer. A card or ruler displaying different pupil sizes will be held next to your eye to find the best match. Contact lens fittings may also include a tear film evaluation. The amount of eye moisture may be assessed using a small strip of paper placed under the lower eyelid. As well, a fluorescein dye may be placed in your eye and then the doctor will assess how long it takes for the dye to be washed away by tears.

After the tests have been completed and evaluated, your eye doctor will select the best contact lenses for you. You will then have to maintain regular eye check visits to make sure you are not developing any problems.

There are differences between exams for eyeglasses and exams for contacts. The important thing to remember is that these tests are designed to ensure that you maintain good eye health.

Side Flush Toilets

August 27th, 2007

side flush toilets

Consider the benefits of a dual flush toilet before you buy bathroom furniture

Dual flush toilets have recently become incredibly popular in areas such as Asia, Europe and Australia and are currently rising in popularity in North America as well. Why are so many people turning away from conventional and low flow toilets to dual flush ones? Well, here are a few benefits to owning a dual flush toilet.

* The dual-flush technology - this toilet has been designed with two options for flushing: one for solid waste and one for liquid waste. Flushing liquid waste naturally will use much less water than flushing solid waste.

* Efficient design - these toilets work differently from standard toilets. Where a standard toilet will use a siphoning method to get rid of the waste, a dual flush toilet has a larger trap way in the bottom of the bowl and pushes waste out. The latter uses much less water - under a gallon is used for a short flush and about 1.6 gallons for a long flush - and waste goes out more easily.

* Savings - with this design, you’re not only conserving water, but by doing that you’re also saving money on your utility bill. Dual flush toilet allows you to save almost 70% of the water that is typically required for a standard toilet, and replacing an older toilet would generate much more savings.

With the rising cost of water and increasing concern for preserving our environment, it is easy to see why the dual-flush toilet is becoming so popular in our world today. Although these toilets do cost much more than standard toilets, you should find that the long-term savings will quickly add up.

Some governments also offer tax rebates on the purchase of these toilets to bring the initial cost down significantly. With all the benefits, there is absolutely no reason for anyone to purchase Bathroom Furniture

Flu Nasal Congestion

Natural Home Remedies For Flu

Influenza or flu is the most common disease during winters. All types of flu are caused viruses. There are about 200 known flu viruses. These viruses not only cause fever but also congest throat, nose, lungs, bronchial tubes, and middle ear making even breathing difficult for the patient. The drugs and medicines seem to be ineffective for flu as whenever you stop taking these medicines, flu comes back and makes the patient’s life very uncomfortable. Ayurveda believes that the cure for flu is precaution. One has to prevent flu by increasing body immunity against viruses and other harmful outer elements. However, Ayurveda also suggest home remedies for getting relief from flu conditions like fever, cough, sorethroat, nasal congestion etc.

  • Vitamin C, garlic, honey, cinnamon etc. are all immune boosters. Try to take them regularly as a part of your diet.
  • Mix some fresh lemon juice with lukewarm honey and take it daily to increase immunity against viruses.
  • To get relief from sore throat, gargle with lukewarm water after adding salt to it for 3-4 times a day.
  • You can even gargle with 1 drop each of tea tree oil and lemon mixed in glass of warm water. Remember not to swallow the solution.
  • Mix 10-20 drops of one of the following- tea tree, eucalyptus, lemon or lavender oil- to your hot water bath. This strengthens immune system.
  • Mix 1 tbsp of lukewarm honey with 1/4 tsp of cinnamon powder. Take this mixture daily for 3-4 days to improve immunity.
  • Take steaming water in a big bowl and add 2 teaspoons of chopped fresh ginger in it. Lean your head over the vessel and drape a towel over head in such a manner that the steam doesn’t escape. Inhale the steam to get relief from congestion of nose, throat and chest.
  • You can even add eucalyptus oil or menthol to the water and then take steam. You can breathe easily after such a flu treatment.
  • Drink lots of water during the day. It keeps respiratory system hydrated and helps to liquefy thick mucus built up. Don’t drink too much of coffee, tea, or alcoholic beverages and quit smoking as they may lead to dehydration.
  • Ayurveda suggests ‘Neti kriya’ (nasal saline intake) for clearing of the nasal passage and getting relief from congestion. Get a ‘Neti pot’. Mix 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon baking soda in 8 ounces of warm water. Fill the Neti pot with this saline solution. Lean over the bathroom sink, tilt your head to one side and pour the solution directly into one nostril with the Neti pot. Solution will go into nasal cavity and run out the other nostril and the back of throat. Spit out the drainage, and gently blow nose to clear the nasal passages. Repeat the activity twice or thrice a day.
  • Take half teaspoon each of sitopaladi powder, sudarshan and honey. Mix them well and have it every few hours.
  • Avoid fried and cold food and liquids. Switch to a bland diet and take fresh and hot food and liquids like soups and herbal tea.
  • Include garlic in your diet. It is one of the best immune boosters.

Swine Flu And Rash

August 27th, 2007

swine flu and rash

Holiday against Swine Flu

Holidays against Swine Flu.

Wherever you travel in the world, there are certain risks and considerations that you take into account without even realising it, such as acceptable women’s dress in Muslim countries; vaccinations prior to travelling to countries with Malaria risk; even making sure you carry the correct currency and learn foreign phrases in a local dialect.

The risks involved in disregarding such matters are obvious, yet there are many more involved in international travel that you cannot prepare for, such as viral outbreaks. When, in 2009, an outbreak of Swine Flu, Influenza A virus subtype H1N1, was announced in Mexico, the U.N. World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Unites States’ Centre for Disease Control (CDC) warned that the situation, if uncontrolled, could escalate to a pandemic. The outbreak currently sits at Level Five, just below the required Level Six to indicate a pandemic.

Although widespread international panic ensued and untold numbers of holidaymakers were disrupted, whether they were visiting or had visited Mexico or not, potentially millions were undeniably saved because the threat was taken seriously, with travellers screened at airports and placed in quarantine if they were suspected to be carrying the virus.

Such unforeseen circumstances challenged international air travel to its limits, forcing countries to work together to ensure a pandemic did not occur as people returned unchecked to their home countries before a diagnosis was made global, in April 2009. In total, over 5,000 cases were announced in Mexico alone, with 97 deaths. By June, the virus was said to have reached over 66 countries worldwide.

Because of such unavoidable risks, it’s vital that when you travel you are fully covered by the appropriate travel insurance that ensures you can receive medical attention whenever it’s required. Failing to carry valid and appropriate travel insurance could result in delayed treatment and high medical bills.

If you’re planning to travel to global destinations, then you could benefit from worldwide travel insurance, which can cover long stays, short breaks, single trips, or even multiple trips throughout the year to anywhere in the world and would enable you to seek medical assistance in the country you visit.

You could also benefit from taking particular precautions in learning how to prevent the spread of infection. Good respiratory and hand hygiene is best in the case of Swine Influenza. In the same way you would prevent the spread of human flu, you can apply precautions such as always using and disposing of a clean tissue once sneezing, and washing your hands after sneezing. Should you experience any flu-like symptoms drink plenty of fluids, rest and take paracetamol, ibuprofen or aspirin to ease any symptoms such as head or muscle ache. As with common flu, should symptoms persist for a prolonged period, or if new symptoms manifest, such as rash or aversion to bright lights, then you should consult your doctor.

You could also benefit from adhering to official advice on travel and considering whether your trip or holiday is necessary. If you do find yourself in an international location and you could be at risk of infection of any kind, pay attention to local health warnings and advice and, if in doubt, seek the opinion of a medical professional.

To accomplish your holiday travelling against swine flu and enjoy your vacation, you can visit my site to find great locations and destinations to travel around.

Flu Diarrhea And Vomiting

August 26th, 2007

diarrhea for 4 days straight?

My daughter got the flu ( vomiting and diarrhea) monday, I got it on Tuesday. I got over the vomiting by wednesday afternoon, but I still have the diarrhea and the severe abdominal pain(intermittent). I still have very little appetite also. P.S. gross info following: the diarrhea is different though, still liquid and still bright yellow, but now its almost cloudy like, almost a cloudy film sets on top, I don’t know how to explain it. Im debating whether to call my doctor or whether to just chalk it up to the flu still hanging around. Any ideas. Again, I apologize for the detailed info and appreciate any answers or suggestions anyone may have.
This is not my daughter im talking about, its me.

After this amount of time, you should consult with a doctor. The pain especially might be an issue. While you think this is the flu, there is the chance that it is something else, such a severe food poisoning. In the meantime, be sure you keeping both of you hydrated — and try one of the probiotics (NOT the ones in yogurt, though, they may make it worse). My doctor gave me samples of ALIGN which helped me within 24 hours.
