Swine flu has recently been classified as a global pandemic by WHO (World Health Organization). The expected number of people becoming infected worldwide over the next 24 months is 2 billion people. This is about double the average yearly number of influenza infections. This increased number of infections is due to the fact that this strain of influenza A (H1N1) is new and so as a global population there is little or no herd immunity.
Signs of influenza A (H1N1) are flu-like. They include: fever, cough, headache, muscle and joint pain, sore throat and runny nose, and sometimes also gastrointestinal symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhoea.
The severity of the virus is wide ranging from very mild infections right through to severe disease and death. Most people infected so far have had a mild infection and have recovered at home without need for hospitalization and specific treatments. Those who have died or had severe symptoms have mostly had underlying disease or a weakened immune system.
The recommended treatment for the virus is currently Tamiflu and countries are currently working to increase their stock levels in order to have stores of enough to combat the predicted rise in infections over the winter. There is, at present, no effective vaccine available for the virus although there is currently a huge global effort to produce one. There is the potential to manufacture up to 4.9 billion doses; however, this is mainly dependent on achieving full global manufacturing capacity.
Swine flu first originated in Mexico and from there spread rapidly to North America and then across the world. Regions that have been most affected have been in North America and Europe although there have now been large numbers of cases confirmed in more distant countries such as Japan and Australia.
A global pandemic such as this necessitates large amounts of worldwide communication and interface. Many of the countries who will begin to become affected by the pandemic will include developing countries that cannot effectively support a comprehensive public health response and are consequently relying on aid from the WHO.
In order for all of the factors discussed above to be addressed in the most effective way and to minimize the global impact of the virus there is a large need for translators and interpreters. At TJC-Global we have over 20 years experience in translation and interpreting services in over 180 languages and dialects. Our experienced linguists can offer translation services for documents, research, histories and records and interpreting for conferences, clinical meetings, consultations, symposiums and other settings. This can help ensure that language is not a barrier in the fight against the swine flu pandemic.

It was bound to happen: Some people who aren’t at high risk for swine flu complications got the much-in-demand vaccine.
Sometimes they were healthy adults or senior citizens instead of kids, pregnant women and people with health problems.
Before Los Angeles County health officials stepped up screening at their flu clinics, Natalie Thompson sailed through the long line and got the vaccine along with her 8-year-old son, even though she’s not in one of the priority groups.
“If I can get it, I’m not gonna say no,” said Thompson, 35, of Hollywood Hills.
Another mom, Katy Radparvar, didn’t say no either.
“Our doctor doesn’t have it yet,” said the 41-year-old woman who was vaccinated along with her three children at a public health vaccination site in suburban Encino last week.
Public health officials don’t want to be vaccine police. Many don’t turn anyone away who wants the vaccine, though some locations are tougher than others.
“For many this is a frustrating process and we really sympathize with those who show up at a clinic and can’t get vaccinated,” said Los Angeles County public health director Dr. Jonathan Fielding.
Across the country, thousands have waited in line and many have been turned away, as manufacturers have trickled out the slow-to-produce vaccine. Things are improving, and now about 25 million doses are available, the government says.
Aware of scant supplies up front, Santa Barbara County clinics administered their 4,400 shots to pregnant women only. San Diego County is only immunizing those on the priority list, but is taking the word of residents.
Nevada is using the honor system with vaccinations offered on a first-come, first-served basis to those who identify themselves as at-risk for the H1N1 virus.
“We really are hoping people go on the honor system and let us immunize people in the priority groups,” Southern Nevada Health District spokeswoman Stephanie Bethel said. “I think, for the most part, it’s working.”
In Oregon, Portland metro area officials say pregnant women and children are moved to the front of the lines and inoculated before the general public.
“We assertively asked those who were not in the priority group to move to the end of the line, so when we ran out of vaccine, those people who were left were those who were not at risk,” said health officer Dr. Gary Oxman. “And people have responded well to it.”
The vaccine shortfall prompted Wisconsin state health officials this week to remind local health agencies “to strongly encourage” announcements about the limited vaccine supply and the focus on vaccinating high-risk groups first.
Robert M. Pestronk, executive director of the National Association of County and City Health Officials, said local health departments are doing the best they can under challenging conditions.
“Despite those best efforts, it doesn’t surprise me that people who are not in high priority groups are appearing at clinics for vaccination,” he said. “It’s difficult to restrict vaccine simply to the priority groups.”
One of the doctors who helped draw up guidelines for vaccine priority groups also isn’t surprised at how things are unfolding.
The government’s vaccine advisory panel “did not expect vaccine police to be set up around the country,” said Dr. William Schaffner, a flu specialist at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, who is on the panel.
If vaccine demand is low in some locations, it makes sense for non-priority groups to get it instead of wasting the supply.
“I don’t consider it a problem,” said Schaffner. “I consider it more of a problem if vaccine is left unused.”
That’s what happened in the 2004-05 flu season when there was a shortage of seasonal flu vaccine. Many older healthy people refused to get the shot so that those who had health problems would have access to vaccine.
“One of the things that was learned was to be careful about turning people away because we might end up with a lot of vaccine at the end of the year,” said Dr. Anne Schuchat of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention But right now, there aren’t many vaccine leftovers to be found. Every morning, Anne Jenkins of Shreveport, La., makes a round of calls to ask doctors and health clinics if they have the injectable swine flu vaccine. She is 23 weeks pregnant.
After seeing four elderly women requesting swine flu vaccine — to no avail — at a local military treatment facility she thought to herself, “you’re not on the list.”
Though local officials tell Jenkins the vaccine won’t be available until mid-November, she’s ready to compete for her dose when it arrives.
“You feel the animal instinct come out,” she said.

actinic keratosis (AK), also known as a solar keratosis, is a small, rough spot occurring on skin that has been chronically exposed to the sun. Actinic keratoses generally measure in size between 2 to 6 millimeters in diameter (between the size of a pencil point to that of an eraser). They are usually reddish in color and often have a white scale on top.
Causes of Actinic Keratosis
* Repeated, prolonged sun exposure causes skin damage which may develop into a solar keratosis.
* The sun damage responsible for a solar keratosis usually occurred years before the lesion forms
* A history of frequent or intense sun exposure or sunburn
* Pale skin
* Blond or red hair, especially when coupled with blue, hazel or green eyes
* A tendency to freckle or burn when exposed to sunlight
* A weak immune system as a result of chemotherapy, AIDS or an organ transplant
* Common locations for actinic keratoses are the face, scalp, back of the neck, upper chest, as well as the tops of the hands and forearms.
* Men are more likely to develop AKs on top of the ears, whereas women’s hairstyles often protect this area.
Treatment of Actinic Keratosis
Freezing (cryotherapy). An extremely cold substance, such as liquid nitrogen, is applied to skin lesions. The substance freezes the skin surface, causing blistering or peeling. As your skin heals, the lesions slough off, allowing new skin to appear. This is the most common treatment, takes only a few minutes, and can be performed in your doctor’s office.
Creams or ointments. Some topical medications contain fluorouracil, a chemotherapy drug. The medication destroys actinic keratosis cells by blocking essential cellular functions within them.
Chemical peeling. This involves applying one or more chemical solutions — trichloroacetic acid (TCA), for example — to the lesions. The chemicals cause your skin to blister and eventually peel, allowing new skin to form. This procedure may not be covered by insurance, because it’s considered cosmetic.
Solar keratoses can be removed by surgery or by freezing with Liquid nitrogen.
When there are many keratoses, a useful treatment is 5-FU (5-fluorouracil) cream.

What’s in your water? I know the tap water where I live is full of things I’m not comfortable giving my family on a daily basis. Nitrates, chlorine, heavy metals and discarded pharmaceuticals are only a fraction of the toxins that can be found in the indoor stream that we as Americans have become so dependent on. So what are the alternatives?
You could drink well water. In some cases this is a great choice, but not one available to the average suburbanite or city dweller. Also this is never foolproof as some wells often test positive for bacteria, iron and nitrates from pasture run-off.
You could buy bottled water. This sounds great in theory, but having personally witnessed the testing of many of the more common varieties of bottled water available, I can tell you, this is probably the least effective way to get good water. Most of these are run through cheap filters if any and then sold to the consumer as “pure”. The funny thing is there are few regulations set on how clean the water has to be in order to slap a label on a bottle of tap water and call it “filtered”.
You could invest in a Reverse Osmosis system, more commonly referred to as an R.O. This is a fantastic choice by any standards. I’ve tested and consumed water from a good quality R.O. and was impressed. The R.O. unfortunately can be costly and it is generally a permanent or semi-permanent addition to the home. This may not be the best choice for those who want something more portable especially those who do not own their own residence or
property.
So where does that leave you? There is a product out there that is effective, inexpensive and portable. It’s a Berkey Light filtering system. This interesting product can filter even the dirtiest of water from a pond or a contaminated water source and give you back a quality, safe, clean source of water to drink from.
The Berkey filter element which is used in all of the Berkey products is rated to safely remove pathogenic bacteria and parasites like E.Coli and Giardia and inorganic compounds like chlorine to non-detectable levels; heavy metals including lead, mercury, aluminum, cadmium, chromium and copper to five percent or less; nitrates and nitrites from pastures and pesticides to less than 15 percent; and with the addition of an add-on PF-2 filter, you can reduce fluoride by at least 95%.
In addition to the comfort that comes from knowing I’m giving my family safe water to drink, the water also tastes great! Before I owned a Berkey, I filled gallon jugs and placed them on my counter to allow the chlorine to evaporate before consuming it. My husband thought
I was crazy and eight one-gallon jars take up a lot of counter-space. Soon after, I noticed that my husband was quite taken with this new source of tasty water. He was even more impressed when I replaced my somewhat clumsy purification system with the Berkey Light. He is, in fact so impressed with this new water source, that he often fills the reservoir more often than I do – a feat in itself!
I think that if you are concerned for the health and well-being of yourself and your loved ones, that finding a good quality source for water should be a priority. If the most important source of nourishment is poisoned, then we have little hope of accomplishing the high standards of health that everyone hopes for.
For a reasonable investment you can get yourself a great system that will filter the water in your home and not only that, but you can take it to your grandma’s house for Thanksgiving dinner or take it camping and filter the creek water. It’s an innovative way to get your
bottled water at a higher quality and at a fraction of the cost. Probably the only product out there that is better than the Berkey Light is the Big Berkey, but that is another story.

Dr. Robert C. Atkins took the weight loss industry by storm when he published his now famous book “The Atkins Diet”. He said to ignore the fat and limit carbohydrates to lose weight. Countless people have had great success with The Atkins Diet. That success speaks volumes.
The truth is though, it’s not for everyone. Talk to your doctor before you start the Atkins diet, or any diet, to be sure it’s a good choice for you.
No counting calories. And say ’so long’ to processed junk food. You’ll eat far fewer carbohydrates. You will concentrate on eating lean protein and low carb high water content fruits and vegetables.
Your goal is to put your body into ketosis. By keeping your carb intake below what is necessary to replenish the glucose stored in your muscles, you force your body to burn fat for fuel. The fat molecules won’t burn completely. You will literally be expelling fat molecules from your body without having to burn them first. This is ketosis.
The Four Stages Of The Atkins Diet
1. Induction
You start by severely reducing carbohydrates. No more than 20 grams per day. The induction phase lasts at least 2 weeks. Those that have a large amount of weight to lose may want to stay in this phase longer. Here is where the rate of fat loss is the highest.
You will see the greatest weight loss during this stage. These lost pounds will come from fat and water loss. As you deplete your stores of glycogen you will flush large amounts of water from your body. The good news is this will probably lower you blood pressure and it is very encouraging to see your weight drop so fast. Great for your confidence.
Expect to lose 15 pounds or more in the first two weeks.
2. Continuing Weight Loss
Now that you are done with the induction phase you can increase your carbohydrate intake to 25 grams per day. You will check you ketone output daily. You will slowly increase your carb intake until you stop producing ketones. You then cut back on the carbs a little just to stay in ketosis.
You want to stay slightly in ketosis so you will continue to excrete partially burned fat molecules. Here is where you begin to introduce low carb high water content vegetables to your diet.
Stay in this stage until you’ve reached your weight loss goal.
3. Pre-Maintenance
In the Pre-Maintenance stage you begin to introduce more low carb vegetables and some fruit to your diet. You need to watch your weight very carefully here and keep close count of your carb intake.
You will add carbs until you stop losing weight.
4. Maintenance
You now know how many carbs you can eat to maintain your weight. Continue to count carbs and choose healthy fruits and vegetables. Eat lean protein and get some exercise.
From this point forward you know what you need to do to maintain a healthy weight. Now go get some fresh air and have some fun.

Wednesday morning I awoke at 2:36 am. I know this because the first thing I did was look at my digital clock and wonder why my left arm was tingling. I certainly hadn’t stuck a paper clip into an electrical outlet during the night. My arm wasn’t really hurting, just tingling like crazy.
After lying there a few minutes I did the only thing that could possibly help the situation. I got up, went to the kitchen and made a sandwich out of some leftover barbeque from the night before. By now it was 3:00 a.m. and there was nothing on television at that hour except Ginzu knives, exercising equipment and botox cream commercials.
TV programming didn’t really matter because by this time I was too nauseated to eat my sandwich and drink my glass of milk. I left them on the tray and headed back toward the bedroom to lie down again, but I had only taken a few steps before I had my first chest pains. At first it was only a little burning sensation not unlike indigestion pains. Every step though, increased the pressure until it was a burning, crushing all consuming ache.
Being the pillar of self control that am, I calmly went to my bedroom closet, stepped into clothes and shoes, grabbed my wallet, bagged up my medications and woke my wife.
She drove me to the hospital where they stuck me in a wheelchair as soon as they saw me and pushed me inside where I was attacked by an admitting clerk, who insisted I do the paperwork. I tossed her my wallet and told her to get what she needed.
An orderly rushed me inside where they made a fast assessment of my vital signs. Blood pressure: 240/145, heart rate 160 and fluttering. I was in the middle of an atrial fibrillation, which at 4:00 a.m. and before my morning coffee is not a lot of fun.
My chest was one big ball of constrictive pain. ER nurses put two IV’s in my arms with one holding a vial of morphine. After sticking a nitro-glycerin patch above my heart, the hurting rapidly went away; for about 20 minutes. Other stuff, like blood thinners and nausea medicine was oozing into my body as I lay there wishing the pain in my chest would go away.
Within minutes I was wheeled down into the bowels of the hospital, with nurses and the admittance clerk running after me with papers for me to sign. We arrived at the cath lab where seven other nurses and a couple of doctors started doing strange things to me as I tried very hard not to vomit on any of them.
After signing a couple of papers that said I was giving them the go-ahead to do the procedure and another one that said if they found anything interesting they had my permission to go ahead and fix it, I was given another IV and promptly passed out. I felt no pain, but I knew everything that was going on and even was able to answer questions.
The surgery team that worked on me was great! One of the doctors must have been a rock and roll fan, for when they were about to begin, someone turned on a CD player and “Journey” was piped into the room.
The doctor inserted the catheter/camera into the femoral artery in my upper right thigh, or groin. The videos showed that my arteries were basically clear. I heard the doctors talking about which medicines would cure the problem of getting the heart back to working right. I found out later that day the medication cocktail they gave me worked.
My doctor explained what had happened to me and in my drugged state, this is what I remember. Atrial fibrillation is a problem where the heart’s two upper chambers are not able to establish a coordinated rhythm with the two lower chambers.
Actually, my heart sounded like a garage sale lawn motor only running on one cylinder. This irregular and rapid heartbeat is caused by electrical pulses fired from the top part of the heart to the bottom chambers, thus establishing a constant rhythm. This was not happening to me. My heart rhythm was really messed up.
Considering I was dopey on various drugs, I think the medical information I retained is excellent. During the day it was determined that if they were unable to control the heart rate and rhythm through medication, they would have to shock it into obedience with electricity. Luckily for me, medications worked!
I must have satisfied the lady from admissions sometimes during the day because I never saw her again. All in all, it was an interesting day and I thank God for the outcome.
