Despite stories that continue to swirl through the news cycle, there is no evidence that the predicted outbreak of swine flu will become reality in 2009. But, there is also no need to let your guard down. There is a hard-hitting strain of influenza coming, in fact, already here but it has no connection to hogs or swine. It is H1N1, an influenza variety every bit as debilitating as its viral cousin.
“You cannot tell the difference by the symptoms,” said Blanca Cantu, spokesperson for the Dallas County Health Department. “The symptoms are so similar and given the fact that H1N1 is the only (flu) strain that is circulating it’s not important to distinguish between the two.”
As summer has turned to fall, Colorado’s outbreak of this flu strain has stabilized. While flu cases are still occurring they are not mounting nearly as rapidly as they threatened when schools and colleges opened for classes in August and September. The state’s largest college campuses, in Boulder and Ft. Collins, the Air Force Academy, were hammered with outbreaks early in the school year. And while things have cooled a bit, this flu strain is taking a toll.
By the middle of October, Colorado state health officials had attributed fourteen deaths to H1N1. Two of the most recent deaths caused by this flu strain occurred within a one-week period in Pueblo earlier this month. Both victims, a 37-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman, were said to have had other health issues that may have played a role in their deaths.
But preexisting health issues, including asthma and obesity, two things plaguing many Latinos could complicate things. The Centers for Disease Control reports that these two factors could lead to more serious or longer lasting influenza in certain patients. Additionally, because many low-income families, oftentimes Latinos, hold off treatment because of lack of health insurance an emergency room is the first time they’ll see a doctor.
It was expected that the H1N1 vaccine would be ready by now and being given nationwide. But that’s been delayed and wholesale inoculations are on hold with no firm dates set for when vaccinations will begin. “It’s hard to say,” said Cantu. “When there is enough vaccine on hand to conduct a mass vaccination for the public we will announce that as soon as possible.”
When the vaccine is ready, Colorado health officials are urging pregnant women to be first in line for their shot. … State Health is also urging those who care for young children to sign up early.
The last time a nationwide vaccine was administered against influenza was in the mid-seventies when a wave of swine flu was thought to carry severe consequences. In a handful of states, some receiving the shot suffered unanticipated complications resulting in paralysis and other long-term health problems. Today there is a new concern accompanying the H1N1 vaccine.
Thimerosal, a chemical containing mercury, a substance that has been associated with autism, is part of the H1N1 vaccine. It is a preservative and also kills bacteria. But the government says that the amount of thimerosal in a vaccine is microscopic and does not pose an additional health risk.
The government is not predicting how many deaths will be caused by H1N1. But, each year in the U.S. more than 35,000 flu-related deaths occur, many among older people or those with other health issues. Still, the government is confident that the vaccine that millions of Americans will soon be receiving will stave off a flu outbreak and prevent a repeat of the ‘great influenza’ of 1918. That outbreak claimed as many as forty-million lives worldwide.

Light Up your Holiday With LED Lights
I read somewhere that people were expected to downsize their Christmas celebrations this year because of added home energy costs. Nonsense, when decorating your house, simply use LED lights inside and out and you will save money!
Let’s look at some comparisons between regular holiday lighting and LED’s.
Traditional incandescent bulb: 6 watts
Typical strand of 50 lights: 300 watts (.3 kilowatts)
Using the national average of 9.81 cents per kWh, this averages out at a cost of $4.50 over 30 days, if you run the lights for 5 hours per day. Multiply this by the number of strands you plan on hanging up for your total approximate usage cost.
Let’s compare this to the cost of using LED bulbs:
LED bulb: .08 watts
Typical strand of 50 lights: 4 watts (.004 kilowatts). Using the same parameters as for the regular lights, total usage cost for 30 days would be less than 6 cents.
Durability: LED bulbs also generate less heat than regular bulbs, giving them a life span of up to 100,000 hours. This translates to 10 times longer than fluorescents and 133 times longer than typical incandescent bulbs. They also don’t contain delicate filaments, and are not damaged as easily as regular bulbs. These features make the LED a safer form of lighting.
Cost : At one time these lights were over priced and hard to find, but now they are widely available, and the prices have dropped considerably. Although the purchase cost may be higher, the real savings is in the usage costs as explained above.
Light field: LED’s do not radiate light in 360 degrees as do the incandescent bulbs; they are more of a focused light. The light will be brightest wherever it is pointed towards.
Variety: Indoor and outdoor bulbs are available in a wide variety of colors and shapes for the holidays.
Safe use of your LED lights:
- Make certain you are using the lights for their intended use, i.e. indoor/outdoor.
- Do not connect standard light strings to LED light strings. This could result in power loss, damage or fire.
- Understand your total wattage for each string and do not exceed this in your circuits.
Be sure to decorate your home this holiday season with this efficient, energy saving form of lighting.

Breast Fluid Cyst

painful lump detected on breast, could it be a cyst?
This evening, as I was changing to go to bed, I noticed a painful lump in my breast. It appears to be fluid inside of it. From what I have read online, it sounds like it might be a cyst, but I am not entirely sure. It is around the areola and rather painful. If it helps, I just turned 25 years old and my period is due to start in the middle of next week. I plan on visiting a doctor, but my doctor is not in tomorrow and my insurance won’t cover something that they don’t see as being an emergency for me to go elsewhere (it is graduate student insurance, I am supposed to visit student health first, but they aren’t in until Monday). I am just trying to find out more info to hopefully make myself realize it is either a cyst or it isn’t. If it isn’t, what else it might be?
I have had a breast cyst before. It was round, movable, and tender. The doctor was able to tell what it was immediately just by looking at it. He drained it with a needle in the office, and it never came back again. The stuff that drained out of it was really gross looking, and he said that was typical. Don’t freak out, go to your doc when he/she gets back in. I was 30 when I had that one. The other thing it could be is a fibroadenoma- a non cancerous breast tumor. (had two of those before also at age 28) The doctor can tell you what it is with a needle or punch biopsy right in the office. Good luck. Don’t fear!
