Java Flush Output

June 30th, 2006

What can I use as a buffer to write all of my data to a file at once, with Java?

I’m just curious. Like, so it’s not hitting the disc every single time. What can I use as a buffer, and then just have it write all at once?

What I’m using now us ObjectOutputStream output = new ObjectOutputStream( new FileOutputStream( “file.dat”));

How can I use a buffer to hold all that data until I decide to flush it?

I’ve already posted a link regarding buffered read/write. It may help you as well; includes a full example:

Swine Flu Northern Hemisphere

June 29th, 2006

swine flu northern hemisphere

What Do We Know Now?

We were all told that any virus could sneak up on us from behind while we were looking in the H5N1 direction, and yet this outbreak of H1N1 was not expected.  Not in specific terms, but it certainly was expected in general terms.  Whatever the source or the label, a pandemic is a pandemic; and preparations are necessary.

The stunning speed of spread was something we were also told to expect of a pandemic virus, but when the first news reached us of an outbreak in Mexico City, and by noon of the same day it had spread to California, Texas, and Kansas, we were taken aback.  By mid-afternoon it exhibited itself in Canada and Britain.  Same day.

Whether the death toll has been significant or not, the evidence of the incredible spread of a virus should make us seriously consider our vulnerabilities.  Some may say it was all a bust, we were all ramped up for a rocket that fizzled.  Others are looking at this through the experience of past pandemics and recognizing the similarity to the typical wave pattern of other pandemic infections.

“Pandemic,” refers to geography, not to severity of the illness.  The number of countries of contagion have merited the ranking of a Stage 5 category, not the number of deaths.  The severity of the virus is limited in the first wave for two very significant reasons.  Firstly, in the northern hemisphere the flu season is typically November to April, and is coming to an end for this year.  Remember, flu viruses thrive in the cold, unlike bacteria which are killed by freezing.

Secondly, it is typical of a flu virus to circulate in waves, likely two or even three.  The second wave usually is the one that mutates into the super-killer wave.  We could expect the timing of this wave to be in the fall, when the virus has had its “dry run” and has had time to adapt efficiently to human hosts, and re-visit at a time when seasonal viruses thrive and we are most vulnerable to flu viruses in general.

In addition, world wide, the resources, attention and response to the H1N1 swine flu outbreak have been completely appropriate.

We all know, and are likely even related to, at least one skeptic, whose voice scoffs in our ear at every mention of readiness.  Some of the other relatives, on general principle, are then yelling about the sky falling with every cloud that passes across the sun.  It’s easy to lose balance on this topic, and it’s even easier to take our ease and see this wave of H1N1 as a bullet missed.  We may even decide the storm has passed and put pandemic concerns back on the shelf.

  1. This age group normally should be the last to succumb to a flu virus, but their more efficient immune systems are shocked into an over-reactive mode that turns the body’s defenses against itself.

Another lesson we are learning from this experience is that “flu”, as a term, is deceptive.  Flu doesn’t begin to describe the phenomenal disruption to the immune system these pandemic viruses produce.  Like the dreaded SARS, it’s not just coughing, sneezing, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, and feeling like crap.  This pandemic flu produces seizures, paralysis, coma, and of course, death.

The word is out about hand-washing, cough and sneeze etiquette, staying home if sick, and keeping an eye on people who might be ill at school, work, or on a plane.  The media have all pounded home the proper messages.  There may have been a few places on earth that didn’t have the information, but not likely any more.

So, don’t toss the hand-sanitizer.  Don’t alter your hygiene protocols.  Eat right.  Get plenty of exercise.  Try to eliminate as much stress in your life as you can.  Get enough rest.  We believe this is the first wave, and we hope we’re wrong.  Judging by world reactions to the announcement of Stage 5 it’s encouraging to see that the dust is being blown off pandemic plans across the globe.  Perhaps with this warning and heightened concern we will see subsequent waves pass as mildly as this.

Stay well.  Take care.

Im taking a antiviral med called Tamiflu. I want to know if this will cause defects or harm to my child that will be here in two weeks

Stomach Flu And Back Pain

June 28th, 2006

stomach flu and back pain

Stomach and back pain lasting for hours, could it be an allergic reaction?

I tried a Mushroom and Swiss burger at Dairy Queen, which tasted funny because of the sauce on the mushrooms. Shorly after this, I went home and took a nap because I wasn’t feeling well. When I woke up, I had horrible pain in my entire stomach and abdominal area. I went to my night class after this and the pain continued, hurting more when I would walk or stand up. My back also began hurting very badly. This continued for 7 hours or so, until I went to sleep. Now that I’ve woken up, the pain is back, but only in my stomach, and it’s less severe. I was wondering if it could be some sort of stomach flu, or allergic reaction to MSG or something else in the burger. Anyone have any idea what this could be?

more likely the fat in the burger triggered a gall bladder attack, something common in women who consume too much fat. Suggest you have your doctor check you out.

Lymphoma Lungs Fluid

June 28th, 2006

Canine Lymphoma - What You Need to Know

Canine lymphoma is a cancer of lymphocytes in dogs. Lymphocytes are white blood cells that play a crucial role in defending the body against pathogens such as bacteria and virus. The tumor can develop in any part of the body where there is lymph tissue, such as lymph nodes, spleen, bone marrow, liver and other organs.

Canine lymphoma usually occurs in middle aged dogs, especially Golden Retrievers. The cause of this type of cancer is not known. It can be influenced by genetic or environmental factors, or both.

Canine Lymphoma Symptoms

The symptoms vary according to the type of canine lymphoma. There are several types of lymphoma, depending on which part of the body that the tumor develops.

1. Multicentric - Tumor develops in lymph nodes as painless lumps on the neck, behind the knees, under the front legs and in the groin. This is the most common type, accounting for at least 80% of all canine lymphoma. It can spread to other internal organs such as the spleen, liver and bone marrow. In the later stage of the disease, the tumor causes obstruction in the affected organ and symptoms such as weakness, tiredness, loss of appetite and fever can arise.

2. Alimentary - Tumor in the gastrointestinal tract that results in vomiting, loss of appetite, diarrhea and weight loss.

3. Mediastinal - Tumor of the thymus. In the advanced stage of the disease, dogs develop breathing difficulty, fluid accumulation in lungs and hypercalcemia.

4. Cutaneous - This affects the skin, causing lesions, itchiness, redness, nodules, plaques and hair loss.

Diagnosis Of Canine Lymphoma

Diagnostic tests may include a combination of needle aspirate of the affected lymph node, biopsy, blood test, ultrasound and x-rays.

Canine Lymphoma Treatment

Chemotherapy is the only treatment option. The treatment protocol and its effectiveness is determined by the stage of the disease and location of the tumor. A combination of chemotherapy drugs are administered orally and by injection.

Unlike human beings, most dogs experience no side effects from chemotherapy. Only less than 10% of dogs may suffer serious side effects that require hospitalisation. Possible side effects include hair loss, gastrointestinal problems, reduced appetite, tiredness, diarrhea, vomiting, blood in urine and low white blood cell count.

Although chemotherapy does not cure lymphoma, some dogs do go into remission for up to 1 year. However, if left untreated, most dogs will die within 4-6 weeks.

8 Tips on How Home Test Kits Can Benefit You

Home test kits should not be totally relied upon as a substitute for a CLIA approved laboratory, but in certain settings they provide advantages over traditional laboratory testing.  These advantages can reduce healthcare costs, provide peace of mind and be instrumental in improving health and improving healthcare.

One of the major advantages of the kits is the convenience they provide particularly for individuals who are homebound for various reasons including illness, limited funds, or lack of transportation. Home test kits can be ordered online and are shipped to your home.  The test results are obtained within minutes after following directions that come with the kit or in the case of a test requiring interpretation by reference lab, the results are mailed to you in a few days in most cases. Tests traditionally performed by laboratories usually require a needle stick and the removal of a modest to moderate amount of blood from a vein which might be painful depending on the technique and proficiency of the phlebotomist. With the use of a home kit however, only a small amount of blood from a finger puncture is needed and is generally much better tolerated than the puncture of a vein.  Many of the home tests don’t require collection of blood at all, but the collection of urine, hair or saliva instead.

The safety of the specimen collection hinges not only upon the technique and the proficiency of the person that collects it, but also on the environment in which the specimen is collected.  It is a well-known fact that environments frequented by sick people generally harbor more germs (primarily viruses and bacteria), particularly during the height of flu season and which will certainly be the case in the event of a flu pandemic. Not having to go to a laboratory or doctor’s office to have a test specimen collected substantially reduces exposure to infectious disease producing viruses and bacteria which might be of  major importance if you have a condition which lowers your immunity.

Home test kits also provide privacy and confidentiality of test results which is particularly important for individual who live in small communities where discussions in doctor’s offices sometimes become community knowledge. This is especially true with respect to tests for sexually transmitted diseases, illegal drug use and paternity. Many are also concerned about test results ending up in a national databank which does not happen in the case of home testing.

With the burgeoning illegal drug epidemic that is plaguing our society today, a home drug testing program might be the only way of ensuring a drug free home and the linchpin of family stability, particularly if you have teenagers.  Drug test kits enable you to implement and enforce a Parent and Teen Drug Free Home Agreement which could prove priceless in terms of the future direction of your family.

Home testing might also be a good initial step in helping you decide on the type of group health insurance plan you select if you have not recently been to a doctor and are concerned that you might have a particular illness which has not been diagnosed. This is important because many of the PPO and other non-HMO insurance plans have pre-existing illness exclusions which are not covered for a specified period of time or are not covered at all once the policy goes into effect. If you discover that you do probably have a particular condition based on home test result that could very well be the deciding factor in whether or not you select an HMO or PPO insurance plan. If you are planning to purchase your own insurance home testing prior to the application might be of value in validating your answers to questions on the insurance application questionnaire, and might spare you the unexpected pre-existing illness exclusions(s) if your application is approved.

The use of a home testing kit can provide peace of mind regarding environment concerns and can be instrumental in diagnosing disease related to home environment hazards such as exposure to radon gas, lead and other heavy metals.  Routine screening for these health hazards is not a part of traditional medical practice because environmental safety is not emphasized in medical training and screening tests to diagnose illnesses related to them are not routinely covered by insurance companies. The health-insurance industry reimburses based on a coding system. Services, including doctor visits and laboratory testing have specified service codes or CPT codes. When a claim for re-imbursement is submitted to an insurance company by your doctor, laboratory or other healthcare provider the insurance company is informed of the reason(s) the service was provided via diagnosis codes known as ICD-9-CM codes. If a carrier processes a claim in which a listed service code is not justified by an appropriate ICD-9-CM diagnosis code, the claim is denied and the recipient of the service (the patient) is billed. Given customary laboratory fees, that charge most likely will be significantly greater than the cost of a test kit to perform a comparable test.  If a diagnosis is made by use of a test kit and additional future testing for that same problem is required the relevant ICD-9-CM code can then be submitted with futures claims to the insurance carrier and who should then pay the claim. A negative environmental safety home test on the other hand can provide peace of mind that you don’t the home environmental hazard test for.

Finally, home testing can be a bridge between not having health insurance and obtaining healthcare. An example is participation in clinical research trials which afford great opportunities for individuals to receive medical care who otherwise would not be able to afford the care. All clinical trials have what are known as inclusion criteria which include the diagnosis among other variables that have to be met in order to be a participant in the trial. A condition which is diagnosable via home test kit might be the necessary data for screening and eventual enrollment in a clinical trial.  Social Security disability benefits are also an avenue for individuals without health insurance coverage to obtain coverage if deemed disabled following a disability determination evaluation. Many of the evaluations are performed however without applicants having established diagnoses because their inability to afford to see a doctor and have tests performed.  It stands to reason that, if for example an applicant filing for disability due to fatigue has an accompanying diagnosis of AIDS or hepatitis C, whether the diagnosis was made via traditional laboratory testing or from the use of a home kit, the likelihood of obtaining disability benefits would be greater.

In summary, home test kits provide convenience and safety of the testing process, confidentiality of the test results, increased likelihood of a drug free home, and peace of mind with respect to concerns about possible home environmental hazards. Additionally the kits might diagnose problems that would otherwise go undiagnosed and can be of benefit in obtaining medical care, whether it is in the form participation in a clinical trial or the acquisition of health insurance.

Water Conservation: 10 Things You Can Do at Home

Water conservation is an important topic for all of us.  Even if you don’t live in an area subject to freshwater shortages, billions of other people around the world do.  Freshwater is one of our most precious and also our most wasted resources.  Approximately 1.2 billion people worldwide do not have access to clean drinking water.  Can you imagine if you came home at the end of the day and had no water to prepare dinner, take a shower, brush your teeth, or prepare a bottle for the baby?  This is what much of the developing world deals with on a daily basis.  And the problem grows worse as the world’s population increases.

So how do the rest of us help?  The best way to make a difference is stop taking water for granted and start conserving the freshwater that we use every day.  It’s easier than you might think, and just a few little steps multiply as time goes by, adding up to thousands of gallons saved each year.  Here are some ideas to get you and your family started conserving water.

1. Turn off the water while brushing your teeth and washing your face at the sink.  Water saved: 3 gallons per day.

2. Turn off the water in the shower when you’re lathering up or shampooing your hair.  Water saved: 5 gallons per minute.

3. Install a water-saving showerhead.  Water saved: 1 to 2 gallons per minute.

4. Don’t rinse your dishes before loading the dishwasher.  Believe it or not, most dishwashers are designed to handle un-rinsed dishes, and in fact, they may perform better if dishes are not pre-rinsed.  Water saved: 20 gallons per dishwasher load.

5. If you have a dishwasher, use it.  Studies have shown that new, efficient dishwashers use far less water than washing dishes by hand, so when in doubt, put that pan in the dishwasher!  Not only will this save you water, it will save you time, too.

6. Routinely check toilets for leaks.  Standard, water flush toilets are very leaky, that’s all there is to it.  Most toilets will need their inner parts replaced at least once every year or two to prevent unnecessary leaks.  Water saved: Up to 200 gallons per day.

7. If you have old toilets, consider replacing them with new, high efficiency toilets that use less water per flush.  Or, better yet, consider installing a composting toilet that uses no water.  Water saved: 5 to 7 gallons per flush.

8. If you water your lawn, be sure to put your sprinklers on timers.  A sprinkler that’s accidentally left on all night can waste over a thousand gallons of water.

9. If you don’t have aerators on your kitchen and bathroom sink faucets, get some.  They are incredibly cheap, you probably won’t notice a difference in the amount of water flowing from your faucet, and they’ll save 1 to 2 gallons of water per minute.

10. Use a rain barrel at the bottom of your gutter downspouts to collect rainwater for watering plants and filling birdbaths.  Rain barrels can be purchased online or through specialty stores, or it may be possible to build one yourself.

Remember, water usage habits are learned at home.  If you teach your children how to conserve water while they are growing up, they will carry those habits with them for a lifetime.  Think what a difference we could make in 20 or 30 years if an entire generation were raised with water conservation in mind.  So start today, and start at home.  Water conservation is important for everyone, regardless of who you are or where you live.  Freshwater is our most precious natural resource, and we want to be sure there is enough of it to go around.
