Common Cold Rhinovirus

common cold rhinovirus

Is there a cure for the common rhinovirus cold?

I’m not sure if it is the common cold, because it started out a few days ago…all that was wrong was my throat hurting. Then gradually, it got worse and worse. Yesterday, I missed school, and today I’m missing school again, on account of being too ill to go. But, now my symptoms are much, much worse. My throat hurts like crazy, I can’t even yawn or talk normally. And, my nose is really clogged. I got the sniffles and the sneezles. Could this possibly be worse than a regular cold?

No, it just sounds like the regular old miserable cold. Sorry but you just have to drink plenty of fluids, get a lot of rest use a nasal inhaler to help with the stuffiness, take aspirin or tylenol for the aches and pains. You’ll just have to ride it out.
God bless.

Meningitis - Delays In Daignosis and Possibly Fatal Consequences

Meningitis - Delay in Diagnosis and the Potentially Fatal Consequences

Meningitis is the inflammation of the lining of the brain and spinal column called the meninges. It is caused by a bacteria or virus penetrating the lining of the brain. The bacteria or virus can come from any one of hundreds of possible sources. The two most common types of meningitis are meningococcal and pneumococcal.

The consequences of meningitis can be fatal. Where meningitis is suspected immediate medical treatment should be sought from a GP or hospital. The three most critical signs suggestive of the early on set of meningitis are a high fever/ temperature, neck stiffness and altered mental state which results in a patient being confused and disorientated. Other symptoms may also include photophobia (pain when looking at bright light), intense headache, vomiting, limb or joint pain and a rash. In the later stages of the development of meningitis more severe symptoms may be present including blurred vision, loss of hearing, seizures and loss of consciousness.

If meningitis is suspected, a doctor will arrange a CT scan of the brain or, if the patient is stable undertake a lumbar puncture test. A lumbar puncture test involves taking a sample of fluid from the spine called cerebral spinal fluid (CSF). The CSF fluid is examined by a microbiologist or Consultant in infectious disease to see if it reveals the bacteria or virus cells associated with meningitis. The patient will then be started on intravenous antibiotics which will kill the bacteria cells.

Meningitis infection can develop very rapidly. It is crucial that antibiotics are started as soon as possible to give the patient the best possible chance of full recovery. Antibiotics work by killing the bacteria affecting the meninges and reducing the oedema (swelling) and inflammation which causes pressure on the brain. A delay of even a few hours in starting antibiotics to treat the infection can be critical and sometimes even fatal. As meningitis infection the brain, it can cause severe neurological disability. Meningitis often causes a raise in intra-cranial pressure. The following disabilities can result from meningitis:

- hearing loss
- blindness
- loss of bladder or bowel function
- loss of motor function of lower limbs
- seizures
- neuromotor disability
- epilepsy
- learning difficulty

The disability may be permanent, reversible or permanent. Unfortunately in 20% of cases of pneumoccocal meningitis even with antibiotic treatment the condition will be fatal.

Medical research has looked at the factors that determine how well a patient will recover from meningitis. Important factors have shown that have shown to lead to a poorer prognosis for the patient are the patients young or old age, the presence of a rash, a low glasgow coma score indicating lack of response and a low white cell count in the CSF. However, the biggest factor impacting upon a good recovery is the patients neurological clinical condition at the time antibiotic treatment starts. A delay in starting antibiotic therapy will in most cases cause further progression of the infection and an increase in the likelihood in the patient suffering permanent neurological symptoms or in severe cases death.

A delay in treating or diagnosing meningitis may give rise to a claim for clinical negligence. Head injury UK have solicitors experienced in investigating meningitis treatment.

Eye Problems Fluorescent Light

April 30th, 2006

eye problems fluorescent light

Save your planet, use energy efficient lights

It’s just a week after the World Earth Day and the whole world is buzzing to make some lifestyle changes. Whether it’s about saving the environment, reducing global warming or the endangered species, people all over the world are ready to make efforts.

A study says, if every household in the US replaced just one regular incandescent light bulb with a compact fluorescent light bulb, it would prevent 90 billion pounds of greenhouse gas emissions from power plants, the equivalent of taking 7.5 million cars off the road.

LEDs, CFLs, take over the world

With people replacing traditional incandescent light bulbs with more efficient compact fluorescent lamps (CFL), light emitting diodes (LED) and other low-energy lighting and governments like Australia, Britain and America implementing or contemplating plans to change their light bulbs for the better, it is becoming a global phenomenon. As part of the policy changes, entrepreneurs are also putting global warming on the forefront.

Together they work

Experts say a combination of LED and CFL light works best for the homes. For recessed lights, you can use the LED bulbs. They are perfect for this type of lighting, are the most energy efficient, and last far longer than even a CFL bulb. The absence of mercury in an LED bulb is also a big plus.

You can replace the remaining lights with CFL bulbs, but with exception of one. The mercury content is a concern, but with improved technology the amount of mercury has decreased to quite a bit. You can buy what are called “Alto” CFLs that have less mercury than other CFL bulbs. Philips is the major player.

For the eyes that hurt

That one exception is the study lamp. Most people think brighter is better, however over illumination causes headache and even migraines in worst cases. Especially in children over illumination interferes with their learning process. Children experiencing any form of stress are more likely to suffer from dysgraphia, a problem in learning to write and low performance levels.  Studylite with LED bulbs is the best option when it comes to task work like studying.

StudyLite™’s the winner

StudyLite™  is a breakthrough in this spectrum. Developed in collaboration with Sankara Nethralaya, the StudyLite™ has been designed to provide ideal lighting for studies. Not only does it offer flicker free, white light, but also emits no UV or IR radiations. Same as your regular LEDs; uses only 10% of the power consumed by ordinary light and lasts up to 50 times longer.

Guess it’s time we all embrace sustainability and create less earth-endangering homes.

Flu Or Cold Symptom Checker

flu or cold symptom checker

Symptom checker. Cold, flu or more?

I started with a sore throat last Sunday, Monday I began sneezing and coughing and every day since has gotten worse. Fevers, hot and cold, migraines, now nausea and I am assuming soon to be vomiting. I am coughing up a lot of stuff but can’t breathe out of my nose. I thought these things got better not worse daily :-( Help… it is 2 a.m here and I can’t sleep and I am so sick!

It sounds like the flu, though it’s fairly late in flu season. It’s clearly some sort of upper respiratory infection. Since it’s in your chest and has been steadily getting worse, you really need to see your physician.

In the meantime, rest and fluids.

Hope you feel better soon.

Swine Flu 3 Weeks

April 29th, 2006

swine flu 3 weeks

Is it true that most of the Swine Flu cases this fall were in fact not really the Swine Flu?

http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2009/10/24/CBS-Reveals-that-Swine-Flu-Cases-Seriously-Overestimated.aspx

I’m upset because I was told I had Swine Flu when I was ill 3-4 weeks ago but I was not tested. Now, I don’t know if I’ve had it or not. According to CBS, I probably didn’t even have it at all?

Our microbiology lab sends specimens to the Colorado dept of health for confirmatory testing. We do this for all patients admitted to the hospital with flu like symptoms. The last report was up to October 31st. At that time they had received 1457 positive specimens, had sub-typed 1397 specimens and 1396 were positive for 2009 H1N1.

Based on that, and my own experience, which is that seasonal flu usually does not show much activity until October, I would say almost all flu so far this season has been caused by 2009 H1N1.

So if you really had flu, it was 2009 H1N1.

It’s possible you had flu like symptoms and not really flu. I’m not sure how much doctors overdiagnose flu based on symptoms, but it’s true it’s often not flu and that is not unique to swine flu. That happens every year.

Unless you get tested, there’s no guarantee you had flu.

Mercola is really starting to lose it over this, and that’s too bad. I used to read a lot of his nutritional stuff, but I just can’t take him seriously anymore. He has a classic case of tunnel vision because of his anti vaccine stance. A lot of people are “overhyping” the flu, and he is completely “underhyping” it because he doesn’t want people to get vaccinated.

By the way, the statistics I gave you are available online. I included the link below.

Swine Flu North America

April 29th, 2006

swine flu north america

Swine Flu in New York City?

I live in North America. At the end of May, a group of mine for school is traveling a few hours away to New York City on a bus trip.
Students have been rumoring that the trip may not happen because of the Swine Flu but the teachers confirm that this is just a rumor UNLESS it gets worse.
What is the Swine Flu like now (in particular, in New York City)? I’ve been hearing mixed reviews (ex// its bad, its a pandemic, it is getting better, it is declining in North America, etc). Do you think we will still go on the trip? I’m hoping and I think we still will, but I’m unsure. As of right now, it is for sure we are going, but can something drastically happen between now and the end of May?
Please let me know.

People in this city are not living in panic. This H1N1 flu, so far, has not shown itself to really be any more potent, deadly, or rapidly-spreading than any other flu. In other words, practically the same as any flu, but with more media attention. ALL of the cases in this city have been in people who are directly connected to one specific school (students and some friends/families), and ALL of the cases in this city have been mild. Basic treatment, rest, and so forth - they’re fine.

I’ve been within sight distance of that school a few times lately, and have talked to people with direct connections to that school. I was on a bus with students from that school not long ago. I’ve even…[GASP!]…shaken some hands. I’ve lived to tell the tale, and have not fallen ill.

Enjoy the trip. The normal, run-of-the-mill hazards are much more dangerous than the flu. Falling, auto accidents, other illness, and so forth. You’ll be fine. Wash your hands, as you normally do.

Once you get a grasp of just how big this place is, and just how small a group of people have fallen ill, you’ll realize that this mass hysteria is really unwarranted.

I guess something drastic can happen, but that isn’t even close to happening yet. What would have to happen is that the virus would have to mutate into a more deadly, more drug-resistant form for it to really become a problem. Can it happen? I guess so. Has it happened? In short, no.

Enjoy your trip. Don’t worry so much about people sneezing, worry more about looking both ways when you cross the street. That’s the greater danger.

Blocked Flush

April 28th, 2006

blocked flush

Tips to avoid Blocked Drains

Drains can be cleaned out in various ways, but the inconvenience caused until then can be very stressful and irritating. To avoid getting trapped in such a mess, you can take a few simple precautions at your end that will help you avoid a blocked drain and related stressful and costly inconveniences.

Blocked drains can be caused by many reasons, but the headache and mess caused are really not worth being disregarded, so you should take a few preventative steps to avoid getting a blocked drain.

Some tips to avoid getting a Blocked Drain:

• Try this: instead of using chemical products, use a mixture of a quarter cup of baking soda mixed with 50 ml vinegar, which is added to boiling water. This solution used regularly will prevent your drain pipes from getting clogged.

• Make sure you don’t pour greasy or fatty liquids down the drain, as this may not flow easily through the drain pipe, causing blockages. The fat gets encrusted on to the sides, thus narrowing down the width of the pipe.

• Another cause of blocked drain pipes is hair. Make sure you clean out the excessive hair from the plugholes in bathrooms to avoid blockage.

• Make sure you clean out the sinks, toilets and baths regularly with disinfectant to avoid dirt and hair build-up.

• This is a very obvious tip, but most plumbers are called for help because the drain pipe is clogged with a large object that should not be there. This can be caused by accidentally flushing a toy, etc. Make sure such objects are not placed too close so they can be knocked over.

• Toilet fresheners also sometimes get accidentally flushed, so be careful.

• Avoid using excessive detergent, as this leads to a build up of the detergent on the pipes’ inner walls, thus reducing the water flow.

• Keep a regular check if the drainage is flowing freely by lifting the drainage covers at regular intervals.

• Don’t flush sanitary napkins or nappies down the toilet, as they will get clogged.

• Make sure there is no way for leaves and other garbage to get trapped in the drain pipes.

• Tree roots that grow into the pipes are another cause for concern, as this is something you don’t have control over. But fear not with new technology, like the Sanafoam Vaporooter and electric eels, you can clear your sewer and drain pipes of the live roots. The Vaporooter uses an herbicide, which kills the roots inside but does not get absorbed by the plant, thus not affecting the plants and shrubs above ground.

If you are looking for a plumbing service for blocked drains or otherwise, your best bet would be Newman Plumbing. These plumbers in Melbourne will have every solution you require. For more information, please click here: www.newmanplumbing.com.au.

Flu Fast Heart Rate

April 28th, 2006

flu fast heart rate

Can some cold medicines do this to you?

Okay, so I have like a really bad “head cold” and sore throat thing and last night I took some Tylonol Flu PM. When I was in my bed it felt like my heart was racing very fast and it was pounding hard. And every once in a while it felt really wierd almost like it skipped a beat. It ended up freakin me out so I couldn’t sleep. Could the medicine have sped up my heart rate or somethin? ♥

Yes it can, I suggest you don’t take any more of that particular brand and not take any other brand that contains the same medication.

It can speed up your heart, and can cause an irregular heartbeat.
