Flu Transmission Rate

October 28th, 2005

flu transmission rate

Could swine flu become a zombie outbreak?

Think about it. Tens of thousands are infected, the government in Mexico shut down schools and such, the rapid rate of transmission…it sounds like the swine flu could become the “zombie outbreak” you hear about in horror stories. We know nothing about it, there’s no cure or vaccine and the chances someone is immune to it are slim.

So, is it time to grab the shotguns?

I hope so muahahahaha!

How To Write A Resume In English

Writing a resume in English can be different from writing a resume in one’s native language. There are many key points to consider when writing an English resume. The following is a list of helpful tips on writing a resume in English:

An English resume should be created on a word processor. Hand written resumes are not acceptable. Print your resume on high quality paper.

Do not include a picture of yourself.

Do not put the title Resume or Curriculum Vitae as a heading.

Type your complete name, address, telephone number, fax, and email at the top of the resume.

The Profile section is where you summarize your skills and experience. It should be only one or two paragraphs long. Write a resume objective. The resume objective is a brief sentence stating what type of work you want to acquire. You should also include your career ambitions.

A resume should be no more than two pages long. Try for one page. Highlight your positive characteristics by keeping content brief and to the point.

Proper grammar and spelling is essential. Use a capital letter at the beginning of a name. Write complete words. That is, do not use initials for company names or qualifications. Ask an English speaker to check your resume for errors. Use strong verbs such as: accomplished, encouraged, managed… etc. Use past tenses unless explaining your current job and make sure you do not use “I” in your descriptions.

Spacing: Address: bold and placed in the center of the page
Objective: double space
Experience: double space
Education: double space
Additional Skills: double space
Align everything to the left except your name and address.

When entering your education achievements place your highest qualification first and list the others in reverse-chronological order. Include any degrees or certificates as well as your major. Make sure that you enter the institution and dates you attended. Do not list grades unless they are requested.

Highlighting English Language skills is an extremely important part of the English resume. Under the “Skills” heading, describe your knowledge of the English language. This includes if you are bilingual, fluent in English, and how well you speak the English language.

When entering your career history, place your most recent job first and then list the rest in reverse-chronological order. Include where you worked, dates, name of employer, your position in the company, and your duties.

When listing your skills in an English resume, it is important to highlight technical, professional, and other skills not associated with your career history. Choose skills that are similar (transferable) to the position in which you are applying.

List no more than six achievements from your education, work experience, other experiences (paid and non-paid), and special skills. Highlight unique achievements from your career or education history that will help you stand out from other candidates.

Personal details should be brief and to the point. Details should include your nationality.

Finish your English resume with the statement: References available upon request

The purpose of an English Resume is to sell your qualifications. It is essential to emphasize your education, skills, work experiences, and achievements. A well-written and well-rounded resume can catch the attention of a potential employer.

Getting Swine Flu While Pregnant

October 27th, 2005

Is there a swine flu vaccination?

I was on the computer just listening to the show The Doctors, I thought I heard them say there may be a vaccination for this. I’m 29 weeks pregnant.. Would that be something I needed to get/would be able to get while pregnant and if I came down with swine flu what would happen to my unborn baby? I hate needles more than anything else, but I would get the vaccine if I had to.. Also, should I try to stay in the house as much as possible???
I live in Maine and they just said on the news that there are three cases as of today all in towns very close to me.

No they don’t have vaccines for it yet .They won’t for months .They are telling people to take Tami flu which I heard pregnant women should not take .

Edit:Anyways want to know something nice I read today:”Young children and pregnant women are two groups of people who are at high risk of serious complications from seasonal influenza.”

Swine Flu Outbreaks History

swine flu outbreaks history

why is everyone pointing their finger at Mexico when it comes to the swine flu?

If you look up the history of Swine flu , it has been around for about 50 years or so. And some of the outbreaks originated in the United States. I guess Americans are the cleanest people in the world. We don’t have a gang problem, corruption, bad economics, diseases, college student running around doing inappropriate behavior. I’m glad to be American, but we can just put the blame on other countries all the time.

Stop worryin who to blame long enuff to note thas where de outbreak started dis time. Mex City. It not blaming. It documentin.

>We don’t have a gang problem, corruption, bad economics, diseases, college student running around doing inappropriate behavior.

Oh, I get it, you be funny fellow.

First Flush Stormwater

October 26th, 2005

first flush stormwater

help help! Industrial stormwater treatment options

I’m Dylan, university student. I’m currently working on a Stormwater collection and treatment project for a chemical factory. The factory i’m dealing with has a fairly large compound and has it’s own stormwater catchment system. We would like to design a treatment unit that is able to treat the collected stormwater and reuse it on site.
The stormwater collected on site will be slightly more contaminated that normal rainwater as it is a chemical factory and the first flush might carry contaminant residues along with it.
The characteristics of the stormwater is that it has higher TDS, TSS and COD as compared to normal stormwater.
Does anyone have any idea what process i should design to get a treated effluent good enough to be reused, yet is not overly expensive?

Thank you!

I have no idea. Maybe look for an industry with a similar problem and see how they solved it. Most people use settling ponds. Ontario has a city where they have a rain water treatment facility. But it is just a series of settling ponds separated by staggered partitions. It would get rid of the solids. Sometimes they use aeration to reduce cod.

Look at what water treatment plants do and did the past. I think it was a large screen, then settling ponds, then sand filtration, and then chlorination.

Dead tree full of life

Potassium Fluid Balance

October 26th, 2005

potassium fluid balance

If You’re Trying To Lose Weight, Make Sure You’re Getting Enough Potassium

Our modern lifestyles tend to contribute to a potassium deficiency. For example, many people wanting to lose weight fast resort to all kinds of fad diet.

Many of these diets are produced with one aim in mind,to make money for the person(s) who think it up. There is no concern for the health of those who are duped into giving away their hard-earned cash.

One of the health concerns of these diets is that some of them provide only a fraction of the potassium needed for our good health, 2000 to 3500 mg per day.

Another problem that can cause low potassium levels is sodium. Because of a chemical relationship, when sodium intake is high then potassium intake is low.

Unfortunately, modern diets contain a lot of processed foods, which is a double whammy because food processing not only increases sodium content but also decreases potassium levels.

Potassium becomes depleted from the bodies of those who: take cortisone or diuretics, body build or have illnesses such as kidney or liver disease. Such people would benefit greatly from dietary supplements containing potassium but only if administered and carefully monitored by a doctor.

Also, drinks containing caffeine and alcohol can produce a deficiency because they lower potassium levels.

The importance of having sufficient potassium in your diet cannot be overstressed. Why? Because it is fundamental to the normal functioning of the heart, nerves, muscles and kidneys; it is beneficial for those with blood pressure; it is needed for the body’s fluid balance, it can protect against osteoporosis and minimises the risk of kidney stones plus many, many more.

Symptoms of potassium deficiency include dry skin, weakness, muscle fatigue, slow reflexes, confusion, irritability, heart problems etc.

So, make sure that you eat plenty of the foods with high potassium/low sodium content, which include: baked potatoes (with skin), bananas, soya beans (boiled), spinach, beetroot, almonds (raw), bran wheat, Raisin Wheats, black treacle, sultanas, raisins, wheat germ, figs, dried mixed fruit, currants, seeds, plantain (boiled), chicken, salmon, lima beans, whole milk etc.

The real trick for safe, healthy weight loss is to find the high potassium/low sodium foods which also have a low glycaemic index (GI). Watch this space!

P.S. Do you need a potassium top up? For breakfast try wheat germ with whole milk topped with sultanas, raisins or banana. Then have a baked potato for lunch and for dinner have a piece of salmon with vegetables or salad.

Swine Flu Arises Up In Mexico: Reports Who

The World Health Organisation is meeting today in Geneva to decide whether the swine flu pandemic has finally passed.

If they do agree, then it would be the first time that the committee charged with identifying pandemics and health threats worldwide have acknowledged that the crisis has abated.

Last June the world went on alert as the first cases of swine flu were reported in Mexico and alarms were raised when the influenza strain seemed to have a high mortality rate, particularly amongst the young and seemingly healthy.

The flu quickly spread around the world, its progress closely monitored by the media, who came in for criticism that they raised the public’s fears to an unnecessary level. People were scrambling to obtain prescriptions for the anti-viral drugs Relenza and Tamiflu and it became a common sight to see commuters on tubes and buses wearing masks.

Originally, the WHO feared that the H1N1 virus could kill millions, though in the end there were 12,700 deaths. They  urged that vaccinations and treatments be quickly developed and governments rushed to stockpile vaccines and medication. Many want to resell their vaccination stocks but are struggling to do so.

There have been claims that pharmaceutical firms influenced health officials to buy medication unnecessarily, which are to be investigated by the Council of Health next month.

A spokesperson from WHO said that the organisation was planning a review of its management of the pandemic, to be conducted by independent experts, and that the results would be made public.

Even if the pandemic is declared to be over, there are still fears that a hybrid virus could be born, which could prove more dangerous.

In Britain, the Swine Flu pandemic hotline was shut down in mid-February, after the level of calls dropped significantly. Sir Liam Donaldson, the chief medical officer, said that this was a positive move but encouraged those eligible to still take up their flu vaccination.

At its busiest, the phone line was receiving 40,000 calls a week, though eventually this fell to 5,000 a week. Those with the flu have now been told to contact their own GP to get a diagnosis and if necessary, a prescription for Tamiflu.

Reacting to criticism over the purchasing of the swine flu vaccine on such a large scale, Sir Liam said “We bought it as a precaution because it had to be ordered ahead of time - some of the early news from Mexico was very worrying.

“We acted on a precautionary basis and implemented a well-rehearsed plan.”

T8 Fluorescent Tubes Lumens

October 26th, 2005

t8 fluorescent tubes lumens

Please give me comparision on following points. 1. Efficacy 2. Actual lumens obtained?

between 1.T12 ,4′ 40W Fluorescent tube light and Equivalant CFL light ( Either Spiral,St.pin or T8 /T5 CFL tube light)

*Hint:

Lumens per square foot, also known as a footcandle, is the measurement used to determine how much light an area is receiving. To calculate it, you need to calculate the area and the total amount of light.

Light bulbs are given an efficacy rating for how much light they give off that can be seen by the human eye (luminous efficacy) per watt (or radiant flux) of energy they use. This is called LPW or lumens per watt. The higher a light bulb’s efficacy rating, the less it will cost you to use it. Some bulbs, like fluorescent bulbs, have a higher efficacy rating.

LPW=lumens/wattage.

The “T” in the lamp’s name denotes the shape of the lamp-tubular. The number 5 represents the diameter of the lamp in eighths of an inch.

A general lighting service T12 48 inch (1200 mm) lamp operates at 430 mA, with 100 volts drop. High output lamps operate at 800 mA, and some types operate up to 1500 mA. The power level varies from 10 watts per foot (33 watts per meter) to 25 watts per foot (82 watts per meter) of tube length for T12 lamps.
