Middle Ear Infection – Symptoms, Causes and Treatment
Inflammation of the middle ear is an infection caused by a germ (bacterium). It is very common among children. The middle ear is an air-filled hollow between the eardrum and the inner ear. The Eustachian tube - an air channel between the middle ear and the nose - usually ensures that the middle ear is ventilated and that fluids can run out through the nose.
Middle ear infection most commonly occurs following a cold. It also frequently occurs as a result of contact with other children. Middle ear infection (called otitis media) is an infection behind the eardrum. Ear infections are very common and are usually painful. By the age of six, most children have grown out of middle ear infections and are not likely to suffer long-term problems.
Symptoms
In otitis media, inflammation occurs on that portion of the ear, which is directly behind the eardrum. This pain in the ear is usually of a piercing type and is not attended with fever. Pus is discharged into the outer ear. As the condition progresses, the inner ear becomes seriously affected, and hearing is considerably impaired.
Acute middle ear infection is most common in children. It is caused by a bacterial or viral infection of the fluid of the middle ear. When infection occurs in the middle ear, pus or excess fluid is produced. Ear infections are often associated with respiratory infections or with blocked sinuses caused by allergies or enlarged adenoids.
Causes
A cold or other infection of the upper airways causes the tubes which drain the ears in to the back of the throat to become swollen and filled with mucus or catarrh. These tubes are called eustachian tubes, and are the tubes we open, by yawning or swallowing, to stop our ears popping as we go up a hill or in a plane. This swelling may block the eustachian tubes, and stop the normal drainage of fluid from the middle ear down to the back of the throat. As water which is stagnant becomes foul, so there is more chance of germs building up in this stagnant situation in the middle ear, and a middle ear infection (acute otitis media) is the result.
Ear infections also can be associated with dysfunction or swelling within the eustachian tubes — the narrow passageways that connect the middle ear to the nose. Normally these tubes equalize pressure inside and outside the ear. But a child’s eustachian tubes are narrower and shorter than those of an adult. This makes it easier for fluid to get trapped in the middle ear when the eustachian tubes dysfunction or become blocked during a cold.
Treatment
Many physicians recommend the use of an antibiotic (a drug that kills bacteria) when there is an active middle ear infection. If a patient is experiencing pain, the physician may also recommend a pain reliever. Following the physician’s ear infection treatment instructions is very important. Once started, the antibiotic should be taken until it is finished. Most physicians will have the patient return for a follow-up examination to see if the infection has cleared.
Most ear infections clear on their own in just a few days — and antibiotics won’t help an infection caused by a virus. In fact, about 80 percent of children with acute otitis media recover without antibiotics, according to the AAP and AAFP. If your child is uncomfortable, the doctor may recommend an over-the-counter pain reliever such as acetaminophen (Tylenol, others) or ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, others). If your child doesn’t have drainage from the ear or ear tubes, prescription eardrops containing a local anesthetic may be an option, too. The drops won’t cure the infection, but they may relieve pain.

But there efficiency decreases with increase in pressure. Hence, instead of pumping water they are commonly used to remove water. These make use of nozzles and a freeder stream. Although care must be given to ignite it properly otherwise it would star pumping water instead of drawing it.
In a nutshell, one can say that Water pumps work on the principle of compression or physical lifting both for pumping water and removing it. They are used in swimming pools for sanitizing the water. FINDING YOUR FOOTING (even when the ground has moved)

Have you ever had a time where you were just thrown into a place of panic or worry about your child? Where you could barely function because all you could do was think about this thing or that thing that was going on in his or her life? Where you felt like a complete and total failure as a parent?
Well, this happened to me… not too long ago.
We got some concerning information about my daughter’s health and as a result, my world came to a complete STOP. That news threw me into a tailspin, as I’m sure it might do to any mom. And, in addition to hearing it with my “mom ears”, I heard it through my own “filter” which is peppered with old stuff around loss and pain and fear of loss. (Ahh…just when I thought I had worked through it - BAM! There it is again!)
And not only was I stuck in my fear-based thoughts, but I felt like a failure. Here I was, someone who knows (and teaches!) about emotional and physical health and wellbeing, and my own daughter’s health was suffering. And my own emotional equilibrium was on shaky ground! Even I - who thought I could control everything scary with a healthy diet (yes, it’s ok to laugh) - was not able to control what was happening.
As I continued to fall into a tailspin and let fear take over, I tried even harder to control EVERYTHING. And the more I tried to control everything, the more anxious I got, and the more irritated my daughter got with me. Not a pretty cycle. (It’s easy to see how mothers and daughters get into a fear -control-rebellion cycle).
And then it hit me: “I am making myself crazy, and I am probably making my daughter crazy” (no matter how hard we try to hide our “stuff” from them, we can’t. They know EVERYTHING - even if they don’t hear it in words). And not only was I making both of us more anxious, I was also disrupting our connection, which is the most valuable thing we each have with our children.
I knew that I had to settle into a more peaceful, trust-filled, place so I could tune into my intuition, support my daughter, and help us both have confidence in her wellbeing.
As life continues to present us with challenges, whether it’s around a health concern for our child, or our kid’s being bullied, or our child is struggling with learning, or we are panicked about swine flu, our job is always the same: for us to find our CENTER so we can be present for ourselves and, in turn, our children.
Here’s what I did:
1) I had to relax and shift my feelings and my energy. (My negative energy was definitely seeping out all around me and affecting my family). For me, I find deep breathing, meditating and listening to relaxing music very helpful. (Click here for some great guided meditations for stress). What do you do to relax and shift your energy?
2) I also had to find a “safe space” where I could share my feelings and be completely supported. I am so grateful to have a number of treasured friends who I could turn to and who could support me, helping to keep me centered and grounded. Where do you go to feel completely understood and supported?
3) I had to begin to shift my thoughts in a more helpful direction, rather than in the direction of doom and gloom. I also know that shifting our own thoughts has a powerful effect on our children. Ever observe your own thoughts? Are they depressing and critical and worrisome, or supportive and hopeful?
4) I also had to realize that I ultimately don’t have any real control over my daughter’s “destiny” (although I sure wish I did!). Yes, I am her mother and it’s my job to help keep her safe and healthy; to support her health and wellbeing, and offer guidance, connection and unconditional love. But the truth is: Hannah is going to be who Hannah is going to be. Her body is going to do what it’s going to do, and THE BEST thing I can do for her, is to stay CENTERED AND GROUNDED myself, so I can be present and connected to her. It is from this place, too, that I can best know what she needs.
So why am I telling you all this? As scary as it is to be so vulnerable, I wanted you to know that we ALL struggle sometimes; we all get pulled and pushed off-center, into a sea of confusion or worry or anxiety. By sharing our struggles, we find can our way back to a safe, centered place.
And what I know is true for me, is also true for you:
You don’t have to be perfect (REALLY), you don’t have to know what to do all the time, and you don’t have to turn cartwheels or backflips to be a good mom. What your children need most from you is to take extraordinarily good care of yourself - and stay connected to yourself - so you can continue to be truly present for your them. True honest connection, and being seen for who they are, is what your children want from you, beyond all else.
Sooo…. The question of the day is: What brings you back to your center when you’ve lost your footing?

Don’t Touch That Pork: A Few Swine Flu Truths And Myths
With all the wailing and gnashing of teeth involved with the latest flu outbreak, I think it’s time we set a few things straight about the swine flu. Think of it as a little public service announcement just to shock some of you out of that panic and get you thinking straight.
First of all, pork is safe. Yes, I know it’s called swine flu but it’s nothing like mad cow disease. That’s why there’s a flu at the end instead of disease, of course. The disease spreads via the same way normal flu spreads: contact with a contaminated area or person then contact with either the eyes, nose, or mouth of the prospective infected. Cooked pork can’t possibly be ever infected because cooking and preparation make sure that the meat is clean and healthy for consumption. So, yeah, no need to worry about the ham and bacon in the supermarket.
Secondly, there’s a treatment. Zanamivir and oseltamivir are neuroaminidase inhibitors which is a fancy description of what they do; they’re a type of antiviral drugs that inhibits cell reproduction of viruses so that they won’t spread in the patient’s body. The Center for Disease Control has highly recommended their use for the treatment and control of the disease. Actually, if you find yourself sick, you can do initial treatment via the normal over-the-counter antibiotics that you use when dealing with the normal flu. These can help make the symptoms more bearable and help your body resist the disease better. Those and quite a bit of bed rest can go a long way to make you feel better.
Thirdly, it’s not gonna kill us all. Even at the height of the 1918 Spanish Flu epidemic, with its more than fifty million worldwide death count, the human race wasn’t exactly in danger. Plagues and diseases have been a part of human civilization and history for years. Humans have a way of surviving and infections eventually burn out, one of the disadvantages of killing your hosts too quickly. The bodycount may pile high but no natural disease can eliminate the human species that easily. Besides, like I mentioned earlier, it is treatable and you can recover from it.
Fourth, it’s not that contagious. Okay, yeah, it’s contagious, but like all diseases it has its particular infection vectors and if you know those vectors, a disease can easily be avoided. In this case, swine flu it may be, but it’s still the flu. This means it spreads through the contact points I said earlier. Regularly washing your hands before eating is a step in the right direction and, also, not hanging around sick people, though that one should be pretty obvious.
Fifth, it’s still the flu. The description maybe a bit vague and the name exotic, but it’s still the flu in the beginning. You’ll know you’re from it the same way you know you’re sick from the flu: colds, coughs, chills, and fatigue. That’s the initial stuff though. If you were smart, you’d have taken your antibiotics and lessened the effects. If you’re okay after a few days, that was just the normal flu. However, if the symptoms persist, and you start to vomit or start to suffer from diarrhea, then it’s swine flu and you better call for a doctor.
Well, that’s all then. Hopefully, these bits of information help clear up a few things about the swine flu and help you to undestand the currect situation the world is in.

I just got a fluval 305 filter and I have a few questions about the media.
1)there are three baskets, each divided into two compartments. Because the basket is divided does that mean that I have to put two bags of media for it to work. (I bought the carbon and they came in bags. I am putting the carbon in the middle basket. do I have to use two bags since there are two compartments?

That was the intended purpose by the manufacturer. But you really don’t need to put 2 bags.
I would highly recommend against adding activated carbon. Instead use another kind of filter media. Many people doesn’t clean their canister filter regularly. And thus using activate carbon is a waste since its effectiveness doesn’t last more than a few weeks. After that is simply becomes another filter media. So I would recommend putting filter media with greater surface area.
