Choosing The Right Musical Instrument For You

If music is your middle name, then musical instruments are sure to adorn your room. Music is an excellent way to get rid of the blues. And if you are the creative type, then you can compose your own songs with musical instruments.

Musical instruments are mainly categorized by the way they generate sound. All musical instruments fall under one of the following - string, wind, percussion and keyboard, though there may be further divisions and sub-divisions. Examples of string instruments include guitars, violins, ukuleles and cellos. Wind instruments include pipes, sax, clarinet, flute and such other types. Drums, bongos, cymbals and bells fall under the percussions category. And keyboard instruments include pianos, harpsichords, organs and accordions. Over 1000 musical instruments are available across the world, including folk instruments.

If you want to play on your own, then it is better to start with a musical instrument you like, and then gradually master the instrument by joining music classes. If you like music in general and are not interested in specializing in any particular type of instrument then a keyboard can be the perfect choice. Electronic keyboards nowadays can produce all sorts of sound ranging from guitar tunes to drum beats. A variety of DJ equipments are also available on the market nowadays, which provide creative sound mixing options for the wannabe DJs as well as for the experienced disc jockeys.

On the other hand, if you were thinking of organizing a band then you would need different types of musical instruments. A band normally includes a couple of string instruments, percussions and preferably a wind instrument.

You can purchase your musical instruments online. Choose your favorite instrument from the various websites that you will find on the internet. They often offer discounts if you buy their package deals, which include various types of musical instruments. This can be your best option if you are planning a band with your friends.

Musical instruments can be a costly affair, especially if you are planning to buy the best available on the market. These can set you back by anything from $100 to over $10000. A good Yamaha or Roland electronic keyboard may cost almost $2500. Used musical instruments are often a good choice, especially if you are learning to play a new instrument. For beginners it is advisable to invest in musical instruments in the lower price range.

Musical instruments can also be made at home with items of daily use. Homemade musical instruments mainly fall under the category of percussion instruments. You can make almost anything, from shakers and jingle bracelets to drums and tambourines. You can also make wind instruments such as comb harmonica or kazoo. These help your child to be creative and can keep them busy. And you can now have your own band at home.

Kalenjin Wedding Tradtions

The Kalenjin are a Kenyan ethnic community that comprises of eight tribes. They are about 2.7 Million Kalenjins who live in the Kenyan western highlands. The name Kalenjin roughly translates to ‘I tell you’. Weddings and wedding photos are a blend of tradition and modern style. There are certain preparations that a couple must go through before a wedding and one cannot be considered marriageable until they are fulfilled.

First, the young men and women must have gone through some traditional initiation passages or tumdo, which graduate them to join members of certain age-sets known as ipinda. The males undergo circumcision and stay in seclusion for a long time. Here, they are instructed on how to take care of the home and the cattle. There are also lessons on how to be good warriors. The young women learn how to make pots and gourds for carrying water, how to fetch and carry firewood and how to find wild vegetables, which they used as their meals. They are also taught how to take care of their children and cook.

Although there are no wedding photos at this stage, Kalenjin weddings, just like Toronto weddings, are usually graced with a lot of traditional food including the staple ugali, prepared from white corn and boiling water, meat and whole milk that is fermented and stored in a gourd, which is cleaned using charcoal. There is music with dancers wearing ankle bells and drums, flutes and horns being played. Traditionally, the bridal party would wear animal skins, hides, traditional ornaments and earrings. Today they can wear suits and weddings dresses and even have wedding photos at the ceremony. The Kalenjin weddings can also include some local brews like busaa, which is prepared from fried and fermented millet and corn.

After the wedding, the man takes his new wife inside or near his father’s homestead where a house has been built for the new couple. Polygamy is still allowed if one can afford to pay the bride price for more than one wife. Children are seen as a blessing in the Kalenjin and other Kenyan communities and, until recently, Kenya was the leading country in population growth worldwide. Today most Kalenjin weddings are made up of monogamous nuclear families with many wedding photos as memorabilia.

In Kalenjin weddings like Toronto weddings, much consideration is taken in the bride’s beauty and health, bridal showers, flowers and decorations. Much planning goes into the wedding photos, honeymoon, travel, jewelry, gifts, transportation and reception. Regardless of where the couple may be there are traditions that must be done including paying of the bride price if they are to be wed.

The main difference between Toronto and Kalenjin weddings is the bride price. The bride price is a token of appreciation to the girl’s parents for taking such good care of her over the years. In Kalenjin weddings, this is usually counted in cattle. However, modern Kalenjins normally take the equivalent in cash. In Toronto, a bride price is not considered at all. With cultures, merging each day there might soon be no difference between a Toronto and a Kalenjin wedding.

Stian, a Norse Name With Some Interesting Facts and Known Persons Connected to It

The boy’s name Stian s-tian is of Old Norse origin, and its meaning is “voyager, pilgrim”. The name is popular in Scandinavia. The different-sounding Stig is from the same source.

Stian has 3 variant forms: Stig, Styg and Stygge. Stian is a male first name and a very rare surname. Stian is a short form of the Old Norse Stigandr “wanderer”, which is derived from the root stig “step, mounting upward”

There are found 87 Old Norse baby names for boys.

We know about 9 Voyager baby names for boys. Brendan and Ferdinand are popular Voyager baby names. Arvad, Beattie, Farold, Farr, Hernando, Stian and Viator are uncommon Voyager baby names.

There are 5 Pilgrim baby names found for boys. Christian, Miles and Palmer are popular Pilgrim baby names. Standish and Stian are uncommon Pilgrim baby names.

Stians name day is September 13th .

In the end of 1980’s the name was used amongst 2% of male Norwegians were called Stian, this was the peak usage of this name. At the present around 0.5% of the male Norwegian population is called Stian.

Around 15.000 norwegians are called Stian at the moment.

Stian is known as a first name in Norway since the 12th century. The name is most used in Norway with Sweden and Denmark as the runner ups using this name. Rarely, but occationally we find the name used in other countries such as in the US.

Some known people called Stian.

Stian Lindaas Kristoffersen (born December 24, 1976 in Porsgrunn, Norway) is a heavy metal drummer. His main band is the progressive metal band Pagan’s Mind, who he helped form in 2000.

Stian has also played drums for Jorn Lande, Firewind, and Dimension F3H and is currently part of the project band Kinrick.

Nagash or Lex Icon (born Stian Arnesen, May 7, 1978) is a Norwegian black metal musician. He plays guitar, bass, drums and keyboards.

He began writing music in 1992, together with Fafnir and Glaurung for a project called Troll. Fafnir and Glaurung soon left the band, but Nagash continued Troll as a solo project, playing guitar and keyboard. Wanting to be in a band and “express himself on all levels”, he founded the band Covenant together with Blackheart in 1993. (However, after having released two albums, they had to change the name to The Kovenant due to a Swedish band already called Covenant.)

Gaining a good reputation in the black metal scene, Nagash was recruited as bass player for Dimmu Borgir in 1996. In 1999, he left Dimmu Borgir to concentrate on his career with The Kovenant. At the same time, he changed his stage name to Lex Icon in order to reflect the artistic direction The Kovenant had taken.

In 2004, now known as Lex Icon, he teamed up with Shagrath and formed a new stoner rock band called Chrome Division. In this band he played drums.

Lex has reported that he was fired from Chrome Division and is now 100% dedicated working on the next Kovenant album. He also now currently reported to have joined one of his favorite bands, Crowhead.

He has also been involved in Nocturnal Breed (as a session drummer, under the name of Rick Hellraiser) and Carpe Tenebrum.

Stian Grimseth (born July 24, 1972) is a world-known weightlifter from Naustdal in Norway. He won the European Championship in 1996 and at some time held the 6th position in the world ranking.

He has competed many times in the Olympics, World Cup, European Cup, and in Norway. Stian Grimseth is currently retired.

Stian Aarstad is a Norwegian pianist and keyboard player best known for his four-year (1993-97) stint with the black metal band Dimmu Borgir during which he played keyboards and synthesizers while engendering criticism and controversy for appearing onstage and performing in an infamous top-hat-and-cape outfit reminiscent of Jack the Ripper, while wearing minimal corpse makeup.

Subsequent stories indicated that during his period with Dimmu Borgir, Stian Aarstad did not even listen to any metal sounds, preferring classical music instead. His departure from the band came as a result of unresolved issues regarding compulsory service in the Norwegian Army. In 1998 to 1999, he produced a demo-EP for the unblack metal band Vaakevandring.

In the 2000s, Stian Aarstad had been the pianist for the band Enthrall, but left his regular position during the recording of the band’s third album. Reports have mentioned that he has also performed as a session player and engineer for the band and, in 2007, has been working as a sound engineer.

Stian Aarstad “adapted” the melody “Sorgens Kammer”, the fourth song on the Stormblåst album, from the Amiga game “Agony”.

Stian Eckhoff, born 3 September 1979 in Trondheim, is a Norwegian biathlete.

Stian Carstensen (born in 1971) at Eidsvoll) is a multi-instrument musical virtuoso.

He started as an accordion player at the age of 9. He first learned from his father, and later from a classical player which he attended for 4 years. During this time he played in Norwegian tv, radio, festivals etc. He also toured in America, playing classical music. At the same time he was also into swing jazz, and his father who also played bass, played standard tunes with him.

When he was 15 he started to play electric guitar in a rock band. After a while he started to get back the interest for jazz again, and formed a trio with some local artists. He lived as a freelancer a year or so and then he began to study in the conservatory in Trondheim, jazz department with the guitar as a main instrument. During his two years of study in Trondheim (91-93) he formed the group Farmers Market. Farmers Market was originally a free jazz quintet, until they one day found a note with a Bulgarian folk tune in 11/16. This was a great experience for the boys, and they practiced day and night to be able to play this asymmetrical music.

After a while Stian bought a ticket to Bulgaria, and went around in the villages there to collect, and study the folk music there. The result of the tour was a live record with singers & musicians from the famous “Le mysteres des voix bulgares” recorded at Molde international jazz festival in Norway. After this Stian was totally dedicated to the Bulgarian music. He toured a lot with musicians from Bulgaria, and Romania, and learned a lot from them.

Besides of being dedicated to this kind of music,he also took lessons in Composition, learned to play the 5-string banjo in bluegrass style, played with various jazz groups (be-bop, and experimental) with Jon Christensen and Bendik Hofseth to mention some.

In 97 Farmers Market made their second album with saxophonist Trifon Trifonov from Bulgaria. This was an extreme album with elements of many different styles and ideas from bluegrass in odd meters, To metallica like versions of traditional balkan tunes, and slick commercial music mixed with Stockhausen. The album got very good rewiews from many contemporary music magazines as well as rock, folk and jazz magazines in Europe.

In 1998 he was asked to write music for a Norwegian festival; Vossajazz. He wrote some music and put together a band consisting of his colleague Jarle Vespestad (one of the most talented young drummers in Norway which also play in Farmers Market), Django Bates from England, and Ernst Reijseger from Holland. The music was performed in April 98, with a great success. The choice of musicians was made by a careful hand, because they each had one thing in common; they were into a lot of styles at the same time. The music was composed in a contemporary spirit, but contained elements from many different styles without being artificial.

This seems to be a highlight in S.C.’s career, and he has been working a lot with that ensemble after this. Another highlight was his release of the new record Farmers Market on the German label Winter & Winter, he toured Europe and Japan with this band in 2000. They got very good rewiews both on the album and the concert in magazines like The Wire, Rolling Stone etc. This year Farmers Market played at the worlds biggest jazz festival, the North Sea Jazz Festival in the Hague, Holland.

He also playes with Dutch cello player Ernst Reijseger. They work as a duo playing only self written stuff in various improvisational folk styles.

Last year he studied Bulgarian polyphony in Bulgaria, and rural American Afro-Celtic music in the Appalachians, on a fee from the Norwegian cultural department. He is currently on a two year state fee to study Bulgarian traditional music. His instruments are: Accordion, kaval (Bulgarian flute), bagpipes, guitar, violin, mandolin & banjo.

He recently recorded his solo album, with only his own compositions for Winter & Winter ,it will be released in 26 countries!

Stian Piene Ohr (born 4 January 1978) is a football midfielder/attacker for Strømsgodset IF. He has formerly played for the clubs Hødd, Start, Vålerenga, Stabæk and Molde.

Stian Johannsen is a Norwegian musician known under the stage name Occultus. He was briefly a vocalist and a bassist for the black metal band Mayhem. Occultus was in the band for a very short time in 1991 after the suicide of Dead (Per Yngve Ohlin).

Stian Theting (born 21 October 1976) is a Norwegian football defender/midfielder who currently plays for F.K. Bodø/Glimt.

He joined Bodø/Glimt in 2004 from Skeid, and stayed there even after their relegation from the Norwegian Premier League in 2005.

HOW DOES A DR test for a virus or the flu?

i had been feeling like crap for about 2 weeks, never went to the dr. had a slight 99.7 fever one day, never again, but was tired, nauses, and just worn down….now i feel good except i get a upset/bloated stomache on and off and it sucks….so i am thinking about goin to the dr……any ideas on what i might have, and also how does the dr check for the flu or say a virus like rhino or whatever…

A probable diagnosis of influenza is based on your symptoms and the information you provide. It’s an educated guess based on knowledge and experience. Common viruses like rhinovirus, Epstein-Barr, adenovirus and influenza don’t require testing. The symptoms they cause are so classic that a diagnosis can usually be made from these alone. More complicated and serious viral conditions can be tested for through virology.

Based on what you described here, this may not have been the flu. Something else, perhaps viral in nature. Gastroenteritis, maybe.

Homeopathy can prevent, cure swine flu, say homeopaths

New Delhi, Aug 8, IANS:
Saturday, August 08, 2009
–>
Homeopathy can both prevent and cure swine flu, sans any side effects, say doctors who practise this alternative medicine system in India where over 700 people have been diagnosed with the disease. Amid panic over the spread of influenza A (H1N1) virus, homeopaths are now drafting a proposal for the health ministry to offer their services in tackling the crisis.”Based on the symptoms, homeopathy can offer an effective cure to swine flu. Moreover, it does not have any side effects,” Harcharanjeet Kaur, a homeopath at Baksons homeopathy clinic, said.Well-known Delhi-based homeopath Mukesh Batra cited the instance of the Spanish flu epidemic of 1918 in which more than 50 million people were killed worldwide. He said the mortality rate of people given allopathic treatment was 28.2 percent, while those given homeopathic treatment was 1.05 percent at that time.”Gelsemium and Bryonia were the two homeopathic remedies that proved to be effective against the H1N1 strain back then. These could be of great use even today,” Batra said.Explaining the way homeopathy works, Jaipur-based homeopath Manish Bhatia said this form of medicine works on the basis of symptoms and not the disease.”In homeopathy, there is a concept called Genus epidemicus. This means if there is an epidemic and you take the symptoms of say 15 ailing people of an area, you will notice a common trend. Based on that you give medication - for the symptoms. This same medication then, if given to people of that area, can act as a preventive medicine,”

Bhatia said phone.Besides symptoms like running nose, fever, sneezing and dullness that are the same for common flu and swine flu patients, those suffering from the latter may also have gastric problems like nausea and vomiting, Bhatia said.”Based on the symptoms, there may be different curative medications for different cases of swine flu. One or two of these medications will be used more frequently than the others and this can then be given to others as preventive medication,” Bhatia said.So why WHO (the World Health Organisation) or the health ministry has not taken homeopathy’s help in tackling the H1N1 outbreak?”WHO relies on statistical data before advising governments on tackling a disease. And there is no study on the effectiveness of homeopathy to prevent or cure swine flu. Therefore it cannot recommend homeopathy,” Bhatia said.”Having said that, a group of homeopathy doctors are drafting a proposal to the government to offer their services to help in dealing with swine flu cases,” Bhatia said.”In Brazil, the homeopathic doctors’ community has collected data on the symptoms of swine flu and homeopathic treatments for symptoms and are spreading the word on its effectiveness through internet,” he added.Anwar Amir, secretary general of the homeopathy post graduate association in Maharashtra, said he has written to the union health ministry and the state government’s health department offering their services to deal with the swine flu crisis.More than 616 people have been detected with H1N1 virus so far in India, of which 487 have been discharged.

The disease has claimed one life in India.People however should not panic. The chances of dying of swine flu are just as low as dying of common flu, homeopathic doctors said unanimously.Giving an example of the effectiveness of homeopathy in an epidemic in India,
Batra said when Japanese encephalitis hit Andhra Pradesh 10 years ago, the government distributed one million doses of Belladonna, a homeopathic drug, to children.”No child was affected by Japanese encephalitis after that. Therefore, homeopathy can provide an effective and inexpensive preventive measure and cure for swine flu too,” Batra said.

Fluorescence Spectroscopy Protein

fluorescence spectroscopy protein

Preformulation and Formulation Development

Optimizing Conformational Stability and Biological Activity Maintenance of the native three dimensional conformation is critical for the long term stability and biological activity of biotherapeutics. Biophysical characterization techniques such as circular dichroism, differential scanning calorimetry, FTIR, dynamic light scattering, and fluorescence spectroscopy provide a mechanism to assess the conformational and thermodynamic stability of proteins under a range of formulation conditions. These tools allow development scientists to differentiate among various buffer, pH, ionic strength, and excipient conditions, and identify the conditions that confer the optimal environment for the therapeutic protein.

Utilizing Advanced Statistical Design for Preformulation Development Preformulation development includes statistical design of experiments, allowing simultaneous evaluation of multiple factors and evaluation of interactions between factors. It is crucial to use advanced biophysical characterization techniques to evaluate the conformational stability of large molecules in addition to traditional methods for evaluation of chemical stability.

A large molecule preformulation development program typically includes the following activities:

Evaluate the effect of pH, buffer type, and ionic strength on solubility.

Evaluate the effect of various excipients on improving solubility if necessary.

Evaluate effects of pH, buffer type, and excipients on conformational stability.

Evaluate the effect of pH, buffers, excipients and ionic strength on physical and chemical stability.

Utilize a statistical design approach to identify the optimal conditions for structural, physical and chemical stability.

Perform forced degradation to elucidate product degradation pathways and to demonstrate the stability-indicating capability of the analytical methods.

Forced degradation studies typically include forced oxidation, deamidation, aggregation (via agitation), and/or acid/base hydrolysis.

Evaluation of heat stress, photo stress, and freeze thaw are also performed.

Formulation Development for Numerous Dosage FormsFormulation development includes dosage forms for parenteral, oral topical and inhalation administration, including liquids, gels, suspensions, emulsions and lyophilized powders. Formulation scientists are highly skilled in the development of the dosage forms most relevant to biotherapeutics, with particular expertise in lyophilization and development of stable liquid formulations for proteins. High concentration antibody formulation development for subcutaneous administration requires particular emphasis on viscosity and tonicity. Lyophilization cycle development is performed in the context of the unique thermodynamic properties of the API to deliver an efficient, scaleable, transferable process resulting in optimal product stability and reconstitution characteristics. Formulation development capabilities also include:

Effect of excipients on solubility, tonicity, and viscosity Evaluation of antioxidant and preservative compatibility Container-closure compatibility Long term and accelerated stability studies.

Advantages of Formulation Development Approach. This outlined approach to preformulation and formulation development result in significant savings to the client by eliminating the variables associated with suboptimal formulations. Preclinical development efforts in PK, PD, ADME and toxicology occur with confidence that additional uncontrolled variables from unstable formulations are not introduced into the study. This benefit extends far into clinical trials as well, where assessment of toxicity, dosage levels and efficacy are profoundly influenced by an optimal formulation that conserves the three dimensional conformation of the therapeutic protein. By eliminating uncontrolled stability variables, the focus is placed solely on therapeutic performance and clinical outcome.

At times, pregnancy symptoms can be extremely varying and unpredictable. Those symptoms raise height of anxiety and confusion, making it very difficult for women to detect their pregnancy. Many expecting mothers also get confused if those symptoms indicate complications or not, while some even fail to notify their doctors being unaware of their influence on pregnancy. Hence, getting familiar to the strange early pregnancy symptoms is important for all women who are expecting.

Unexpected Pregnancy Symptoms That You May Expect During Pregnancy

Many pregnant women report that they have not come across any of those prevalent pregnancy symptoms like fainting or dizziness or even bleeding. Dies it mean, they were not sent any signs of pregnancy by their body. Probably, they have been. Probably, they have failed to comprehend those signals as positive signs of pregnancy. Therefore, as soon as you get to know what unusual early pregnancy symptoms you are likely to come across, you will be prepared for them and can consult your doctor, accordingly. A list of those symptoms is given below –

1. Spider Veins – Appearance or the veins surrounding chest and upper arms getting prominent is one of the very unusual early pregnancy symptoms. This is one symptom what most women hate and fret over. However, doctors suggest there is nothing to get apprehended about the spider veins as it simply results from an increased blood flow in the body and then being carried over to different vital areas of the body.

2. Nasal Congestion – If you feel your nose to get clogged during pregnancy, you should know it happens due to nasal congestion. This is regarded as one of the unusual early pregnancy symptoms that may lead to having discomforting nights as you have felt during flu. You nose may often bleed even if during a perfect weather with no signs of cold. Consult your doctor to detect pregnancy.

3. Metallic Taste – You may feel metallic taste often during pregnancy. Metal tastes are considered one of the unusual early pregnancy symptoms and are caused due to hormonal changes in your body.

4. Flatulence - Flatulence or arousal of gases are the most embarrassing early pregnancy symptoms. To avoid this symptom, get your diet chart corrected by a specialist.

5. Production of Excessive Saliva – Many expecting mothers feel excess of saliva in their mouth. These excessive saliva productions lead nausea symptom even more discomforting and make it very hard for pregnant mothers to deal with these unusual early pregnancy symptoms. Your mouth may drool even when you are sleeping.

6. Cramping in legs – If you happen to wake up in pains in your legs at midnight, you should include this among early pregnancy symptoms that is not very common. Blame on scarcity of calcium in your body or other causes during pregnancy, talk to your doctor to find ways to reduce it.

Boosting The Immune System

A strong immune system is vital for a long, healthy, and active life. A strong immune system is important to good health. You can help your immune system remain strong by following these easy tips.

The immune system is built around white bloodcells, amino acids and specialized organs. Its is designed to eliminate and destroy virus, toxins, dead cells, and mutated cells like cancer cells.

Release Toxins

Clean the natural exits that clean toxins from your body. This includes the bowels and the skin. Drink pure water to increase the urine is clear. This will require five pints of water a day. You should also have a bowl movement every day.

Clean the sweat from your body. Sweating a couple times a week will expedite cleaning toxins from the body, but only if the sweat is cleaned away. If sweat is not cleaned away, or the skin pours are blocked, then toxins are trapped in the fat muscles under the skin.

Clean the Blood

There are several foods that help clean the blood. The blood is the heart of the immune system. While 70 per cent of your immune system is in your bowels, the blood is responsible for white blood cell creation and cleaning away toxins.

Season Changes

Herbs and tonics are often prescribed during a season change to help adapt to the new climate. By planning ahead you can reduce the frequency and severity of catching the common cold and flu. Herbs that help are astragalus, ganoderma and cordyceps.

Use herb supplements. Natural products have different levels of the compounds that help the immune system, and they may include toxins.

Garlic has a good reputation, but most people will never eat enough to help. Ginger, onions, and citric fruits are good. The most important habit should be eating a well balanced diet that includes different colors of fruits and vegetables.

Keep in mind that while these herbs are effective individually, they should be prescribed in the content of an herbal formula to enhance synergistic action and minimize possible side-effects.

Reduce Sugar Intake

Only 8 tbsp. of sugar, or one can of soda, will reduce the body’s ability to create white blood cells and kill germs by 40 percent. The immune-suppressing effect of sugar begins within thirty minutes and may last for five hours.

Alcohol

Alcohol harms the body’s immune system in two ways. First, it deprives the body of immune- boosting nutrients. Second, it can reduce the ability of white cells to kill germs.

Three or more drinks damage to the immune system.

Cut Fat

Obesity may lead to a depressed immune system effecting the white blood cell’s ability to multiply, produce antibodies, and rush to the site of an infection.

Emotions

A recent experiment in the New England Journal of Medicine (Cohen ‘91) confirmed that this is a correlation between emotions and the immune system. The researcher gave almost 400 people a psychological stress questionnaire designed to measure helplessness and negative emotions.

He then gave them nose drops containing cold virus. The chances of getting cold symptoms turned out be amazingly predictable from the test scores.

So, if you want to be healthy, watch your diet, stay away from alcohol an sugar, and find something to smile about.
