Tamiflu and Amantadine - Medicines Against Flu

Copyright (c) 2008 Vlad Kott

Tamiflu is used to treat some types of influenza (flu) in patients who have had symptoms of the flu for 2 days or less. This drug works by stopping the growth and spread of the flu virus in your body. Tamiflu helps shorten the time you have flu symptoms such as nasal congestion, sore throat, cough, muscle aches, tiredness, headache, fever, and chills.

As the flu virus takes hold in the body, it forms new copies of itself and spreads from cell to cell. Tamiflu fights the virus by preventing the release of new copies from infected cells. Tamiflu is taken in liquid or capsule form.

Tamiflu can prevent the flu as long as you continue taking this medication, but getting a yearly flu shot is still the best way of avoiding the disease entirely. For older adults, those in high-risk situations such as health-care work, and people with an immune deficiency or respiratory disease, vaccination remains a must.

If you have the flu, continue taking it twice daily for 5 days, even if you start to feel better. To prevent the flu, take it once a day for at least 7 days. Protection lasts as long as you take the drug.

If Tamiflu upsets your stomach, try taking it with food. Shake the liquid suspension before each use. If you have kidney disease, cut your daily dose of Tamiflu in half. High doses of Tamiflu can cause nausea and vomiting.

Tamiflu works only on the flu virus. It won’t stop bacterial infections that may have flu-like symptoms or bacterial infections that may develop while you have the flu.

Most problems noted during tests of Tamiflu were indistinguishable from the symptoms of flu. Here are the reactions that showed up more frequently in patients taking the drug.

* Side effects of Tamiflu may include:

Abdominal pain, asthma, bronchitis, cough, diarrhea, ear infection, fatigue, headache, insomnia, nausea, nosebleed, vertigo, vomiting.

If Tamiflu gives you an allergic reaction, avoid it in the future.

It is not known whether Tamiflu is completely safe during pregnancy. If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, inform your doctor before taking Tamiflu. Tamiflu may appear in breast milk and could affect a nursing infant. Taking it while breastfeeding is usually not recommended.

Tamiflu will not stop you from giving the flu to others. You should maintain proper hygiene, wash your hands frequently, and avoid situations such as sharing cups and utensils that can spread the virus to others.

Tamiflu does not replace the flu vaccine. You should continue to receive a flu shot each year if your doctor recommends it.

***Amantadine***

Amantadine is an antiviral. It is used to prevent or treat certain influenza infections (type A). It may be given alone or along with flu shots. Amantadine will not work for colds, other types of flu, or other virus infections.

Amantadine also is an antidyskinetic. It is used to treat Parkinson’s disease, sometimes called paralysis agitans or shaking palsy. It may be given alone or with other medicines for Parkinson’s disease. By improving muscle control and reducing stiffness, this medicine allows more normal movements of the body as the disease symptoms are reduced.

Amantadine is also used to treat stiffness and shaking caused by certain medicines used to treat nervous, mental, and emotional conditions.

* Side effects

- Less common

Blurred vision; confusion (especially in elderly patients); difficult urination (especially in elderly patients); fainting; hallucinations (seeing, hearing, or feeling things that are not there); swelling of hands, feet, or lower legs

- Rare Convulsions (seizures); decreased vision or any change in vision; difficulty in coordination ; fever, chills, or sore throat; increased blood pressure; increase in body movements ; irritation and swelling of the eye; loss of memory; mental depression; severe mood or mental changes; skin rash; slurred speech; thoughts of suicide or attempts at suicide; unexplained shortness of breath.

How To Make Frosting Fluffier

Secrets From the Pros: Cake Baking

Whether you only bake cakes at birthdays or enjoy them as a dessert year round, it’s possible to make your cakes as delicious as those purchased at an excellent bakery. Just try these easy tips.

Keep it warm

All the cake ingredients should be room temperature before you begin mixing them together.

Fruit puree

Use equal amounts of fruit puree and oil in your cakes. The fruit not only adds flavor, it keeps the cake moist and makes boxed cake mixes more like “from scratch” cakes. Just be sure to reduce the amount of liquid the recipe calls for by half.

An unlikely ingredient

Add ¼ cup of mayonnaise to your cake recipes or boxed cake mixes. It sounds dubious at best, but it keeps cakes light and moist.

Let it rise

To make any cake more fluffy, add 1 or 2 teaspoons of meringue powder to the dry ingredients.

Beat it

Cream your butter for at least 5 minutes. The more you beat it, the more air will enter it, making for a lighter, fluffier cake.

Be choosey

Select a good recipe. If you’ve never tried the recipe before, choose a reliable source, like these cake recipes on videos.

It’s in the pan

Shiny metal pans are best for cake baking. Glass baking dishes or dark baking pans absorb more heat, making it more difficult to create a thoroughly baked but moist cake.

Paper

To give 100 percent assurance your cake won’t stick to the pan, line the bottom with waxed or parchment paper. Lay the paper out on a flat surface, place the bottom of the cake pan on top of it, and trace around the pan with a pen. Cut out the waxed paper, lightly coat the pan with cooking spray, and put the paper in place. Once the cake is baked and cool, the paper easily peels off.

Dusting

To rid your cakes of white flour dustings, dust your pans with some of the dry cake mix. Or, for chocolate cake, dust with cocoa.

Fill ‘er up

Fill your cake pans only halfway. This allows the cake to rise more evenly.

Check the temp

If your cakes have valleys or hills in them, or if the tops brown before the cake is completely baked, your oven temperature is probably incorrect. To remedy this, simply place a portable oven thermometer inside your oven and adjust your oven’s temperature as necessary.

Know when it’s done

The best way to know a cake is done is to poke the center with a toothpick. If the toothpick comes back clean, the cake is finished. Other methods of testing a cake’s doneness may lead to over baking and dryness.

Let it rest

Once the cake is out of the oven, always let it rest 5 to 8 minutes before you do anything to it. This prevents the cake from crumbling when you place it on a plate.

Apply several coats

Pros always put a “crumb icing” on cakes before proceeding with decorating. This ensures a smooth, even icing job. To create a crumb icing, thin down some frosting with a little water until it looks like a glaze. You should be able to apply it with a knife - barely. When the cake is just cooled, spread the glaze over the cake. Let the cake sit this way for 30 minutes, then procede with a traditional frosting.

Fluorescent Paint Home Depot

August 30th, 2005

fluorescent paint home depot

I rented an apartment in May of this year. The bathroom is not very big, but it will do, however, the?

fixture in the bathroom leaves something to be desired. It is a block painted off white with one of those fluorescent bar bulbs attached to it. It’s very ugly and not very pretty to look at. Does anybody have any ideas how I could fix it to make it look fancier? It’s maybe about 16 inches long. I thought that maybe I’d buy a box to cover it up and then totally buy a new wall light at lowe’s or home depot that just plugs into the outlet.

Considering that it’s a small bathroom, you may want to leave that outlet free for other uses. Why not look into a fluorescent light cover instead? There are a lot of style to choose from and they diffuse the light so the room won’t look so stark. Your local home-improvement center should have them. Here’s a website to give you ideas:

The Flu Virus Facts

Indonesia Might Solve the Puzzle of Bird Flu Transmission

Is bird flu being spread more by migrating birds or by people transporting infected poultry?

That’s a question being debated by experts, and although it may not seem important, the answer makes a big difference in understanding how to stop the spread of bird flu.

Some experts say that the main reason bird flu has spread from Southeast Asia to the Middle East, several areas of Africa and much of Europe is migratory birds.

Wild ducks are the standard reservoir for avian influenza viruses, meaning it’s normal for them to carry various influenza viruses in their intestines. It normally does not affect the ducks themselves, but they can spread it to chickens and other birds.

Supporters of this theory cite the genetic consistency between the strain of H5N1 in the wild birds that died around Quinghai Lake, China in the spring of 2005 and the H5N1 found in dead birds found in Europe.

Some experts say that the bird flu virus is being spread mainly by people. On an international level, by smugglers of exotic birds and importers and exporters of chicken meat (often evading duties and tariffs). On the national level, by business people in the poultry industry transporting infected birds from one location to another.

At stake is a lot of money, planning and effort, because we need to adapt our tactics and strategies in the fight against bird flu to what will be most effective.

If bird flu is spread mainly by migratory birds, we need to monitor and restrict their contact with domestic poultry.

If bird flu is spread mainly by smugglers and transporters, we need to crack down hard on the smugglers and closely regulate and test chickens and eggs before transporting and selling them.

I’m no expert, but I’m putting forth the proposition that Indonesia is the perfect “laboratory” in which to test the validity of these two theories.

Indonesia is perhaps the most weirdly geographically shaped country in the world. It’s rivalled by its neighbor to the north, The Philippines, and the Maldives. But it’s 17,000 islands spread over thousands of square miles of ocean. On some islands, it shares space with other countries (East Timor, for example).

I’m sure that someone with more resources than I have could create a database to map the path of bird flu across Indonesia and then compare it with the two possible modes of transmission: wild birds and chicken transporters.

Then see which hypothesis best accounts for the facts:

Location of all islands plotted with longitude and latitude, along with all major cities, regional market centers and villages that have had bird flu cases.

Routes of migratory birds.

Location of all known human bird flu cases — along with dates of infection.

Location of all known chicken bird flu cases — along with dates of infection.

Location of all known wild fowl bird flu cases — along with dates their bodies were found.

Genetic sequences of all known human bird flu cases — together with comparisons with genetic sequences of other nearby infections (found in Thailand, China, Cambodia and Vietnam).

Genetic sequences of all known chicken bird flu cases — together with comparisons from other Asian countries, plus those found in migratory birds in locations that are both come before and after the routes under which Indonesia lies.

Genetic sequences of all known wildlife bird flu cases — together with comparisons from all those found in migratory birds in locations that are both come before and after the routes under which Indonesia lies.

All major transportation routes within Indonesia, including highways, airplane routes, ferries and boat routes.

All chicken transport routes.

Most common travel routes for day to day travel. Most people from the capital of Jakarta will travel only to rural areas where they have family or to vacation/resort spots. Most rural residents will travel only to Jakarta or to the nearest regional marketplace. (This is the norm in developing countries and with Indonesia extreme geography and ethnic diversity, it’s very unlikely that anybody travels from rural province to rural province for pleasure.)

Most common business travel routes from province to province, especially transporting chicken and eggs.

Map all this data into some data mining software and it should soon clear whether bird flu — in Indonesia, anyway — is spreading through migrating birds or human transportation of chickens — or both.

Flu Pig

Just How Much Of A Problem Is Swine Flu?

Obviously a lot of the concern, awareness and hype is driven by a sensationalist led media, something we seemed to have come accustomed to as a nation. It is very difficult for us ordinary folk, especially when pressed for time already, to read passed the headlines and the short news bulletins that seem to have been dominated the flagship news mediums all this week, and get a proper understanding and accurate grasp of how Swine Flu may all affect us individually.

This is breeding confusion, and probably some panic and over reaction, as uncertainty and concern combine. And while the current focus seems to be on whether or not this particular strain of flu will actually spread, rather than anything else, there are a few bubbling issues in the background, that are sure to eventually come more to the front. One of the concerns for the pork industry must be the possible impact this is going to have on demand, sales, and price. The right people seem to be moving quickly to stamp on this before it actually becomes an issue.

“The UK and some other members of the European Union undertake routine surveillance to help detect the presence of animal diseases not normally present in the EU and to identify any change in the prevalence of diseases that do occur. Results of our surveillance suggest that this variant of H1N1 does not appear to be present in pigs in the UK or anywhere else in the EU. However we are taking this developing situation very seriously and will maintain our surveillance effort, keeping the public and industry informed of any developments.” Environment Secretary Hilary Benn told the Newspaper Society. He further went on to reassure the public by saying that the EU does not even import any pig products from Mexico.

The World Health Organization itself has also reiterated that it is not possible to pass this type of virus via the consumption of pork, and if the correct steps are taken, and standards adhered to, then any infected pigs would not get that far down the food chain in any case.

By these actions, and statements, the British pork producers may actually benefit from consumers that will, for once, be more focused on quality and source than solely on price. Hence a demand for a quality home assured product that may be slightly more expensive, might actually increase. However there is also the issue that with this flu simply being labeled as ‘Swine Flu’ that as such, the pig may end up carrying the can amongst those confused and knee jerking into a reaction. And that reaction may include removing pork from their diet.

Treating Stomach Flu In Toddlers

August 28th, 2005

what is stomach flu in toddler? How to treat it ? What are the casuses and preventive measures to be taken ?

Thank You all for your answers. Its been 3 days and his vomitting has reduced but diarrhea continues…. riding it out.

What is stomach flu?
Stomach flu (also called gastroenteritis) is a general term for a whole host of viruses, bacteria, and parasites that can cause symptoms like abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting, fever, chills, and achiness. A virus is most often the culprit, the most common being the Rotavirus. In other cases, the cause is a form of food poisoning bacteria, such as Salmonella, Shigella, Staphylococcus, Campylobacter, or E. coli. Still other cases are caused by parasites such as giardia.

Your child is most likely to pick up by getting infected fecal matter on her hands and then putting them in her mouth. (This may sound gross, but it happens a lot, especially among young children in daycare situations. Remember that these are microscopic bugs, so even when hands don’t look dirty, they may be covered with nasty germs.) Symptoms usually appear within four to 48 hours of exposure and usually last for a day or two but can continue in severe cases for up to seven days.

Viral gastroenteritis is the second most common illness in the United States after upper respiratory infections (such as colds). Before the age of 3, the average child will come down with the stomach flu at least two times a year, more often if she’s in daycare. The encouraging news is that, once a child graduates from toddlerhood to preschool or school age, she usually enjoys a boost in her immunity and won’t contract stomach bugs as often.

How should I treat stomach flu?
In most cases, you can manage your child’s stomach bug by keeping her home to rest and by replacing the lost fluids and electrolytes (salt and minerals) that her body is expelling via the diarrhea and vomiting. (She probably won’t be able to eat much.) Usually, doctors recommend giving an over-the-counter oral electrolyte solution, such as Pedialyte, to a child with moderate to severe gastroenteritis by offering her small sips frequently throughout the day. (These solutions also come in popsicle form), If you’re concerned, call your doctor to discuss exactly how you should give fluids to your child; it will depend on a number of factors, such as her age and weight.

Avoid giving your child juices, sodas, and Jell-O because they can make her symptoms worse. (Gastroenteritis can temporarily damage the lining of the small intestine, making it difficult to digest foods with a high sugar content.) Your doctor may also suggest you avoid giving your child milk because a minority of children will also have trouble digesting dairy products, but most will not. Some doctors say to avoid Gatorade as well, but others okay it for children, especially those over 3, if it’s the only liquid they’ll take. Again, talk to your doctor; every case is different. If your child has a fever or is achy, you can give her children’s acetaminophen or ibuprofen.

For a more mild case of gastroenteritis, say, with diarrhea but no vomiting, your child can continue to eat modest amounts of food and drink throughout the course of her stomach bug and probably won’t require oral electrolyte solution; she’ll need to keep drinking liquids like water and milk to stay hydrated. Never give her an anti-diarrhea medication because it’ll just prolong her illness and can have potentially serious side effects. In most cases, with a few exceptions, there’s no medicine to treat viral gastroenteritis. It simply needs to be managed closely and run its course.

When can my child go back to eating normally?
Once your child’s vomiting and diarrhea lessens or stops, and her appetite returns, your doctor will likely recommend that you stop giving her the electrolyte solution as you slowly reintroduce other beverages as well as foods. Follow your child’s cues; she’ll let you know when she feels hungry. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends children with gastroenteritis resume a normal diet (staying away from fatty foods) as soon as possible. That includes such staples as complex carbohydrates (like breads, cereals, and rice), lean meats, yogurt, fruits, and vegetables. Take note that this is different from the BRAT diet (bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast) that doctors used to prescribe. “The BRAT was once very commonly advocated, but we no longer recommend it because it lacks certain vital nutrients, such as protein,” says William John Cochran, associate professor of pediatrics at the Geisinger Clinic in Danville, Pennsylvania. Studies show that reintroducing a standard diet soon after acute symptoms ease can actually shorten the bout of a child’s gastroenteritis by half a day because it restores essential nutrients to the system that are necessary to fight infection. On the other hand, if your child misses a few days’ worth of good nutrition because her bug just kills her appetite, don’t worry. As long as she’s hydrated, she’ll be fine.

How do I know when to call the doctor?
Call your doctor if your child experiences any of the following:
• a fever higher than 102.5 degrees

• vomiting for more than three days

• severe headaches or abdominal discomfort

• blood in the stool or vomit

• a swollen, hard belly

Also call your doctor if she shows any of the classic signs of dehydration:

• decreased urination

• excessive sleepiness or fussiness

• wrinkled skin, sunken eyes

• extreme thirst

• cool, discolored hands and feet

• a fever higher than 102.5

In such a case, your pediatrician might want to admit her to the hospital (or just keep her there for a few hours) for IV rehydration. If a blood or stool test reveals that your child has a parasitic or bacterial infection, she may be given a course of antibiotics. Don’t be alarmed. Odds are, she’ll be released and back to her healthy self within a few days’ time.

How can I prevent my child from getting a stomach bug?
Since many cases of gastroenteritis are spread via unwashed hands, teach your child to wash hers thoroughly with warm water and soap after every bathroom visit and before meals or touching food. Same goes for you and other family members. It’s also a good practice to encourage her to wash up every time she comes home from, say, a playdate, school, or a trip to the mall. What’s more, be sure you follow safe food preparation and cooking practices.

Knowing Your Style

So you just got yourself a flat. The usual scenario: wake up at 6, leave by 7, home by 11 just to sleep. Most of the time, you don’t even have breakfast, lunch or dinner at home. You just simply go home to sleep. And the cycle continues. It’s like living in a hotel. No wonder your friends still see huge, un-opened boxes of your clothes. It’s obvious that you don’t even have time to really make your house, a home.

A house is a home when you not just own it, but when you also actually live in it. You don’t have to spend every waking second at your house. Do yourself a favor and decorate it. The point is to make it look lived-in, not to make a jungle out of your house. It’s one of the few ways to make yourself, not to mention your guests, feel cozy and snug at some place you can call your home.

There are many ways to beautify your home. But for a more organized and coordinated setting, opting for theme-based decorations are the way to go. Here is a list of themes. Take your pick.

Futuristic

This look ranges from today’s look to space age. Walls are painted with dark colors like blue or black. On the other hand, neons are very much accepted. Little traces of neon colors like green and pink are still visible. They are adorned with hanging chandeliers that looks like it was made of scraps of stainless steel. There is nothing that could remind anyone of grasslands and the country. If there is, it would come from a single rose living inside a transparent glass. Carpets in rich red or vibrant colors are not allowed. However, you can still have warm light bulbs. Mirrors from ceiling to floor are good. Now your room looks like a place in a sci-fi movie.

Mediterranean

Go for pastel colors. Light aquas, greens, yellows and pinks work well on your wall. You can choose one or have them in stripes. Having a hammock works well with the theme, too. Pictures of the seaside, sand on the floor and wooden decorations are good additions. You may also have candles in your room at night instead of the regular fluorescent light. You can have a net with shells glued on it attached on the ceiling. Just be careful in case the shell falls off. Instead of doors, you may use a curtain of seashells that can double as wind chimes. The only con here is that the shells might have sharp edges.

Country

You can go for very warm colors of red, brown and orange to paint on walls or if your wall is made of rich brown wood, stone or brick, then you don’t need to paint it. Rugs and carpets should have a touch of rich red that can be an accent with the warmness of the room. Light bulbs go better than fluorescent ones. You may also put artificial heads of different animals that are usually hunted on your walls or by the fireplace. A grandfather’s clock or the old cuckoo clock is a nice decoration. The older the pieces, the better. The idea is to make look it as cozy as possible.

Oriental

Asian adornments vary greatly. In northern parts of Asia, rich colors like red and gold are the signs of good luck. Wood is also a very important material, as well as silk. You can have throw pillows wrapped in red silk covers and tie a gold ribbon around it. You may also do origami and fold paper. You can make lots of those and put them in a basket or make a few and frame them. Instead of the usual doors, you use a very thin translucent paper, cover an entire frame and use it as a sliding door. Or, this is not exactly safe, but you can also do this to your window.

Victorian

If your house is made of stone or brick, then this is for you. You can use torches instead of the usual fluorescent. The idea is to make the house look haunted but only without the webs and creepy crawlies. You may put freshly-picked rich red roses in a vase. You can also use old chandeliers. If you have antique furniture then it would be great to use it. A grandfather’s clock is also good. If you have a suit of armor, then you can use it as a decoration. An old grand piano is a nice accent too. No happy colors, please. Hang antique pictures that seem to be decaying with age. Make sure they are placed in picture frames worthy to be in the museum.

You are not restricted to one theme only. You can stick to one single theme and apply it to your entire house or you can use different themes to each room. You may also combine different themes or with whatever works for you.

How To Fix Flush Valve

Toilets

Toilets

Toilets come in all sorts of models and types. In the recent years, water saving toilets is becoming more and more popular. Water-saving toilets can reduce your monthly costs. Leaking toilets can also be costly. Areas to check for leaks include:

  • Feel for water around the toilet after use.
  • Check the nut where the supply connects to the toilet and supply connects to the stop. Feel around it for water and drips.
  • Check the nuts and bolts where the tank connects to the toilet.
  • Run your fingers over the bowl and tank to check for cracks in the porcelain

Over time the guts of the toilets can wear down. It is best to inspect the flapper and flush valve. If it hisses are keeps running, then it is time to replace the flush valve and flapper. If the toilet flushes slowly, then there is a blockage in the line.

When it comes to picking toilets, there are many different styles and models. Gravity-fed toilets are normally what people get. The higher end gravity-fed toilets are usually the best. They are quiet, easier to fix, and cheaper. Pressure assisted toilets provide an excellent flush but they tend to be more pricy and noisy. Most pressure assisted toilets are used in commercial properties, such as businesses and restraunts.

Upgrading toilets can also make for a nice touch up when remodeling or if your going for a new look. Plumbing Solutions, LLC does all of those services and much more for very cheap.
